Alex Reynolds and his lover Peter Livesay are dragooned into volunteering for a Chicago area progressive politician's campaign, which entails stuffing envelopes, answering the phones, and dealing with the daily bomb threats from a wide variety of wackos. But one of them was serious enough to actually do it, and now the office manager of the campaign appears to have been killed in the explosion. But, of course, it couldn't be that simple? With the help of their reluctant CIA contacts, Alex and Peter (and Alex's reluctant mother) begin investigating the bombing and soon discover that something much bigger is at play and their own lives are now at stake.
Okay, I read this book a couple months ago. Gave some of this series to a friend and I didn't want her to 'check them out' :P So my reviews of the others in this series weren't as glowing as I wanted them to be. Sure they had a few errors, but the characters are fun! This one had a solid plot compared to the last ones. Umm...too long since I have read, so I barely remember it lol. Oopsie!
I really enjoyed this novel. It's fourth in a series, but naturally the library only has this one. The banter between the characters was great, and the relationship between Alex and Peter realistic. They play off each other well with Alex more outspoken and reckless and Peter more thoughtful although capable of a very dry remark if needed. Alex's mother, Jean, is a great foil who doesn't hesitate to get involved feet first and put in her own two cents worth.
Alex and Peter finds themselves caught in the middle of a political tug of war with a murdering twist. While volunteering with the gay friendly candidate Alex uncovers a conspiracy that ends up blowing buildings, cars and lives up. Enjoyable with a sub plot involving Jean dating this British fellow that just sticks out like a sore thumb. Not the best of the series.
