Thirty-two-year-old Imogen Abernathy is fed up with being a witch. And she’s definitely had enough of her family’s ghost and monster-hunting business, Otherworldly Investigations. But when her younger sister, Carmen, has an otherworldly mishap, Imogen has no choice but to return home to face her past and her deep mistrust of witchcraft. Drawn back into the world of magic, Imogen and Carmen begin investigating a series of grisly murders that may be linked to the mysterious Thistle Witch, a powerful entity with demonic abilities. As magical creatures flee from the Thistle Witch, the sisters realize that they have to tap into old and dangerous witchcraft if they have any hope of defeating this sinister threat. Can they find a way to protect themselves, their family, and the world of magic before the Thistle Witch unleashes her gruesome murder machine? A Devil in Every Dark Corner is the first novel in the Otherworldly Investigations series, which follows Imogen and Carmen Abernathy as they try to aid clients with their paranormal and cryptid quandaries. Along the way, both sisters must also decide what exactly they want in the sometimes-messy world of witchcraft.
As a child, Amanda Braun-Boe could often be found playing too much Nintendo, watching old movies, reading in a hammock swing, and daydreaming about fictional worlds. She obtained her M.A. in English and decided to start putting those worlds down on paper. When not writing, she enjoys baking, reading, searching for the best donuts in whatever town she’s in, filling her phone with cat pictures, and testing the limits of how much coffee a person can consume in one day. She lives in rural Minnesota with her husband and their sofa-stealing furry friends. For more, visit her website or follow her on Instagram and TikTok..
I originally wanted to dnf at the halfway mark but decided to keep going and I enjoyed the second half of the book. I just personally think this book was not my cup of tea however I do feel like if you are a fan of paranormal mystery and want something for spooky season this would be a better read for others
Growing up 90% of the shows that I watched had some sort of supernatural aspect. This has been pitched as Chilling Adventures Of Sabrina meets Gilmore Girls, so of course I had to pick it up! I'd also recommend this to anyone who watched Scooby Doo, Buffy, or Big Wolf On Campus (please tell me I'm not the only one who was obsessed with that show).
From pocket demons and familiars- to reformed Minotaurs and demonic ex fiance's, A Devil In Every Dark Corner has no shortage of magical creatures (all with different personalities).
I loved seeing Imogen and Carmen reconnect as they took on their biggest case yet. I can only imagine where their next investigation will take them!
e-ARC provided by The Nerd Fam in exchange for an honest review.
I had an absolute blast reading this book! It’s full of witches, demons, and magic! This book really reminded me of a mix of Charmed and Scooby Doo in the best way!
This book is about two sister witches who try and stop an evil entity that’s behind a series of supernatural murders. You meet all sorts of magical creatures on this journey to solve the mystery and end evil.
I absolutely recommend this one. It was so much fun to read!
Thank you to The Nerd Fam for the gifted copy of the book.
I think this book has really solid bones. I loved the concept of the plot and I think the midwest witch vibes were super cool. However, this is where things fell short for me. The first half of the book was very hard to get through with the back half being significantly better. The pacing of the novel was definitely off.
I believe this book will do well as it is has a lot of aspects of 2000s supernatural shows so it will definitely appeal to those looking for a more nostalgic read! For some reason I can't explain this book gives halloweentown vibes. I think this book has a lot of potential, just wasn't for me!
This was a cute fast read that is perfect for October! You have witches, demons and lots of magic! I liked the thrill and mystery vibes it was giving! I would recommend to anyone who loves the supernatural!
big thank you to the nerd fam for approving me to read this ARC, and a huge shout out to amanda braun boe on absolutely smashing this book!
this was such a fun one, and was a perfect spooky read with halloween being right around the corner! as promised, this book delivers perfect sabrina the teenage witch x scooby doo x supernatural vibes coupled with laugh out loud humor and quirky friendships. the banter between the main characters had me cackling— the little jokes and absurd anecdotes were so well done. i am so entertained by this style of sitcom on the nose humor where it doesn’t take itself too seriously. i loved how scenes could jump from super serious life or death situations and right into some random pun or funny comment made by one of the girls to immediately lighten the mood, or how they would be in serious shit then somehow find a way to banter back and forth even though it was not the time or place.
i could not get over how genuine the connection/chemistry between the main characters felt especially between imogen and carmen. i started to get a bit emotional as i really felt like it emulated the love between two sisters close in age perfectly and the lengths they would go to to protect one another when faced with danger. they would do anything to protect each other including putting themselves at risk. their cute little inside jokes and stories had me wanting more, so i’m really hoping to read more adventures of our lovely otherworldly investigations duo (i guess trio if you lulu continues on being a part of the team). i always love a good balance of characters and here we had the eccentric sunshine do-gooder out of carmen, the grumpy but selfless imogen, and the “im just here for moral support” human out of lulu. the dynamic between the three is perfect. i especially got a kick out of hector the minotaur and our woodstock hippy faerie lubberkin, and felt like every character addition elevated the plot so much more.
while this book definitely had its heartwarming moments, this book was also chock-full of tense spine chilling scenes and gore. the main storyline of the thistle witch was gripping and i felt like there was a lot at stake for the main characters which is something i always need to be convinced of in order to enjoy a book. they all had a lot to lose—their family, their town, their friends, their lives. i couldn’t wait to find out how they would pull this one off, and was so happy it was a HEA (thank god lol).
i also thought the multiple POV was really well done and added a lot to the story. it was the perfect way to get some of the questions answered the reader had built in their head without committing the sin of telling not showing as some authors do. each POV switch was done in perfect timing, and added just enough detail to keep you hanging on without spoiling any major reveals. having a few chapters in the head of the thistle witch really helped you understand the motive behind the killings, and i actually ended up feeling really bad for her in the end (spoiler alert, the thistle witch has some major low self esteem and fucked up family trauma she holds on to).
you know i had to mention how absolutely adorable i found the cutie little pocket demons, and i’m so jealous of how carmen had a bunch of little demon babies fussing over/protecting her the whole book. who wouldn’t want a cute little thing hanging out in your clothes/hair/pocket 24/7 to make your day a little brighter?
overall, the book was exactly my flavour, and now all i want to read is sitcom style paranormal mysteries!!
“All the demons followed Carmen to the kitchen. In about 10 minutes, they each had dainty cups of apple cider” 👹✨
This was SO FUN!! It offers a delightful blend of horror and humour which is my type of book. The supernatural thriller plot and cozy atmosphere is perfect for this time of year. I loved the small town backdrop with secrets and monsters lurking in the shadows. I see you Amanda..you are hilarious 😂 This was very Sabrina the teenage witch & supernatural coded.
Imogen and her sister, Carmen, were hilarious together. I kept smiling at their banter and the dynamic between the two was so easy to love. They were goofy and their antics brought a lightheartedness to the horror & gore aspects of the story. I want a little pocket demon 🥹
If you’re a fan of supernatural mysteries, strong female characters, found family, and spooky charm. I highly recommend this!
Thank you to nerd fam for the arc Arc review: I originally put in for this arc because of the chilling adventured of Sabrina meets Gilmore girls description and I don’t feel let down by that at all. If you like dark humor, vintage cloths, kindhearted minotaurs, and dairy loving fairies then this is a pick for you. I loved the sisters acceptance of each other and unconditional love. The parents were kooky and fun and adding lulu in defiantly rounded out the group in a fun way. Everyone needs a friend that is down for whatever and rolls with life the way she does. It’s a fun easy (dark)read. It has some parts that could be seen as gory but I confided this more spooky than scary. Defiantly worth checking out!
Ooooooh this was such a fun read to kick off the Spookiest month of the year!
This book featured a really extensive cast of witchy, creepy characters (there were lots of characters) and just like the blurb says it was certainly a fun amalgamation of Sabrina the teenage witch meets Scooby-Doo and Gilmore girls - with its own identity.
Paranormal mystery is definitely one of my favourite genres and this book was no exception, it was witty, creepy and at times downright hilarious.
I also loved that our FMC is was an adult - she’s 32 and I found that refreshing and relatable, I am SUCH a sucker for paranormal investigators and cryptid hunters (helllooooo Ghost Adventures, Expedition Bigfoot, The Unexplained) I couldn’t resist 😂
Thank you to The Nerd Fam (@thenerdfam) for the gifted ARC.
This book was such a fun read! The characters had so much personality, and the relationships—whether family or friends—were full of heart and pure girlhood energy. It gave me all the good vibes with just the right amount of humor that didn’t feel over the top. Honestly, it reminded me a little of Sabrina the Teenage Witch in the best way—just the right mix of mystery and magic.
I loved every moment and am already excited for their next adventure. If you’re into quirky friendships and lighthearted mystery, this one’s definitely for you!
Thank you to the author and nerd fam for an early release arc of this book.
I thought this was a fantastic paranormal mystery.
If you loved supernatural, this will give you those same vibes but instead with sisters. It'll have you laughing while also being creeped out and have your heart racing.
What happens when something goes wrong on your last investigation and you decide to leave the family business of hunting paranormal? Imogen just wants to be normal, but that is short-lived. After 2 years, her sister needs her. & How could she leave her high and dry after all she's done for her ?
Now, they are up against and extremely powerful being. .... only thing is witches don't have the same powers they once had so this is going to be a real bitch to fight.
Thank you to the Nerd Fam for this gifted ARC!! I absolutely adored this book! Now I know everyone says it’s like Sabrina and Gilmore girls, I never watched Gilmore girls so I said supernatural vibes lol! But the banter in this was amazing! The plot and story and characters, all of it just so good! Such a unique story! I couldn’t put this down any chance I got I had to read it, even if my kids only allowed me a page or two of peace lol, I will definitely need a copy of this for my shelf to reread and annotate later cause this was just amazing!!
Thank you to the Nerd Fam for approving me to read this early, I had a great time.
I’d happily rate this 4.5 stars & let me tell you why!
This book had banter, strong female main characters, demons, monsters and atmosphere.
The thistle witch traumatised me and I loved it. She was absolutely terrifying & I’ll just prewarn people that if you don’t like gore or graphic violence then this may not be for you.
This is like a darker sabrina meets Gilmore girls kind of vibe.
I think overall this is a cute read. I do see the Gilmore girls/Sabrina the teenage witch vibes. I do think that there were waaaaaay too many characters involved for a first book of a series. It made it hard for me to remember who was who. I really wish there would have been a clear and defined “this is the past”, “this is the present” as well. That always threw me for a loop. Overall, a low stakes book w/some cute/funny dialogue.
Over all a cute book. Thank you Nerd Fam for allowing me to read this in exchange for my honest opinion. Rating 3.75. I was hoping for something more thrilling but this book didn’t have that scary thrilling aspect of a paranormal book. It was actually pretty cute. I mean pocket demons. Need I say more.
Great book! I read it during the summer, but now that it's going into Fall it would be a perfect spooky-season book! I liked that it was light hearted with a touch of creepy. Think Netflix version of Sabrina the Teenage Witch with a sprinkle of Gilmore Girls vibe. The dialogue was phenomenal and the pace just right. Can't wait for book 2!
This book was funny and slightly creepy (think Sabrina and Gilmore girls ) I loved that I found another new to me author and this book slaps! Perfect for fall spooky season!! Thank you the nerd fam for this arc
𝗜𝗺𝗼𝗴𝗲𝗻 is our selfless main character who will do anything to protect her friends and family! Even if it means sacrificing the “normal” life she has established for herself. 😭 Our poor girl has had it ROUGH! Because magical creatures (mostly mischievous) are attracted to witches, she’s even more motivated to hold onto the peace more than ever.
𝗖𝗮𝗿𝗺𝗲𝗻 is Imogens younger sister who is a natural when it comes to magic. She’s also very quirky, having many different talents and pocket companions. 😂 (I think she just might be my favorite) Between baking pies and making dresses, she tirelessly researches higher-level spells. She’s kind of a Jack of all trades 🙌🏼
𝗟𝘂𝗹𝘂 is an average person who saw enough of herself in Imogen to hire her at her bakery. Despite her not knowing what the heck is going on, she actually takes well to Imogen and her not so figurative demons.. When things get a little crazy, she seems to be the only one who can make sense of it all.
I thought it was a spine chilling book. But it was also fun, and filled with banter! The characters were loveable and pretty quirky in their own way. The way the consequences of using magic is described has to be one of my favorite aspects.
As we follow the girls, we meet a few endearing friends. Everyone has a story, and enjoy a good banter sesh, even at odd times. 😂 Overall these girls made a great team, and I can’t want to see more of their adventures!
I feel like we could’ve seen more of Imogen. It was pretty sad seeing her compare herself to her sister. When she finally got her moment to shine, it showed how amazing and determined she was to protect her loved ones. I want to see more of that!
I need to add that the book kept me on edge, ‼️NO ONE IS SAFE‼️ & please read the triggers!
It’s a rollocking adventure for A Devil in Every Dark Corner the first book in the Otherworldly Investigations series albeit it one with a slow start as the witchy Abernathy sisters Imogen and Carmen unite to take down the bogeyman or perhaps that should be bogey-woman of the supernatural world aka the Thistle Witch who for some reason has waged a personal war on the sisters, rounding out the team is Imogen’s scared boss Lulu who is mainly along for the ride. For probably the first hundred or so pages of this book I was a bit meh - it just wasn’t grabbing me. The characters were all quirky and amusing but that only goes so far but once we really got into the guts of the story and things started to heat up, I sat up and took notice. With an evil being intent on revenge and a gore factor rising with each new victim, the intrepid sisters were desperately trying to find a way to enhance their magical abilities. With a minotaur named Hector and Chace, a skin walking demon in the cellar and pocket demons hiding in the curtains not forgetting an ice cream making fairy, this author showed an eye for the details. Balancing out the oddball humour was the sisters’ relationship, and despite their hilarious banter and general squabbling as only sisters can do, it was obvious that there was nothing they wouldn’t do for each other. I’ll also admit to feeling a twinge of sympathy for the villain of the piece who technically was the first victim of the story. Their inner dialogues about their future plans were surprisingly poignant.
I’ve heard this book described as Sabrina meets the Gilmore Girls, having never watched either I’d have to say for me A Devil in Every Corner was more a like what would happen if Supernatural and Buffy the Vampire Slayer had a baby with the younger sister Carmen definitely resembling Dean Winchester, ready to take on the demonic world with her trusty chainsaw, accompanied by her gang of pocket demons who looked on her as their mother. Balancing out Carmen’s ‘act now, think later’ gung-ho attitude was Imogen, the reluctant witch who had run off to join a bakery for more regular employment …... personally, I’d have taken eclairs over the paranormal any day as well but I’m definitely intrigued about where this series will take the Abernathy witches next.
When I saw the description of the book saying 'Chilling Adventures of Sabrina meets Gilmore Girls in this banter-filled tale of two witch sisters trying to stop an entity behind a series of otherworldly murders' I knew I had to read this book, because those are two of my favorite shows.
After reading this book I can possibly say that the description is right. Imogen and Carmen reminded me a lot of aunt Hilda and Zelda from Chilling Adventures of Sabrina and it has the creepy witchy vibes from the show going strong. Combined with the banter from Gilmore Girls it was the perfect crossover. The witch sisters also really reminded me of Sam and Dean Winchester from Supernatural which made me so happy because I absolutely love this show.
I was sometimes a little bit confused because of the timejumps in the beginning of the book but after that it got me hooked. I really liked the humor between the sisters and Lulu mixed with the creepy and eerie vibes. It was so well-written and it had a lot of plot twists that I didn't see coming. I also loved the fact that the FMC is 30+ instead of a high school girl because that made the story so much more relatable.
My favourite character of the book was Carmen because she was so caring, very brave and last but not least, a great mother to all her pocket demons. The pocket demons were my favourite part of the book so it's safe to say that after reading this book I want my own pocket demon who makes me a hot cocoa and scratches my back.
Favorite quote from the book: "Birds are usually attracted to me for some reason," said Carmen. "I see that," said Lulu, glancing at Carmen's deep green wool coat dress, tied at the middle with a crimson sash. "You look like they dress you in the morning."
Read if you like: 🩸FMC 30+ 🩸Found family 🩸Lovers to enemies subplot 🩸Witch sisters 🩸Demon pets 🩸Monster hunters 🩸Gilmore Girls vibes
A Devil in Every Dark Corner by Amanda Braun Boe delivers a delightful blend of horror and humor. It gives haunted Gilmore Girls vibes with funny magic while still having a spooky element. Boe crafts a captivating world that pulls you into the life of Imogen Abernathy, a reluctant witch who finds herself back in her family's monster-hunting business, Otherworldly Investigations, to protect her sister from a sinister force. What begins as a family reunion quickly escalates as the sisters become entangled in a battle against the Thistle Witch, a powerful being who threatens to dismantle everything and everyone in her path.
Imogen and her sister’s dynamic and humorous escapades breathe life into the story, with each character adding a unique charm and energy that made them instantly likable. The sisters' goofy, unfiltered antics bring a refreshing lightness to the horror elements, giving readers a reason to laugh while keeping them on edge.
The writing style is easy to follow with a medium pace that keeps the plot moving without dragging. Each twist and turn in the plot felt well-timed, making this a book that surprises in all the best ways.
While the book avoids excessive horror, spice, or gore, its unique mix of horror elements and comedic moments offers a thrilling, light-hearted experience that horror and fantasy readers alike can enjoy. So I would say this is a great choice for anyone looking for a fun, quirky read that blends comedy with fantasy horror in a way that feels both fresh and memorable.
I rate it a 4.5 out of 5 stars. If there is a sequel, I would definitely read it!
After reread, I think this book deserves an updated review.
Overall rating: 🎃🎃🎃🎃🎃
“The best part of my new life was that nobody needed an exorcism. And there was no talk of urine-based spells.”
Welcome to the wild world of Pocket Demons, where Cute Corgis and Minotaur roam free, and exorcism cakes are the dessert of choice! If this quirky combo piques your interest, buckle up with this book for a devilishly good time. Because trust me, when a devil is lurking in every dark corner, you know you’re in for a wild ride!
Here’s some basic info about the book: A Devil in Every Dark Corner by Amanda Braune Boe is the first in the Otherworldly Investigations series, published on October 22, 2024. It’s a spooky mystery/horror story with plenty of hilarious banter between the main characters.
Welcome to the Otherworldly Investigations. Sit down, take a piece of exorcist cake, and enjoy the ride Amanda prepared for us. On our journey, our narrator will be Imogen, or as her sister Carmen calls her, Igi. Imogen is a witch who hates to be a witch. I found this concept funny because every woman I know wishes to be a witch, and here I am reading about one who hates it and is on the run from her nature, her loving family, and their business. How foolish?
In a book, we are often taken down memory lanes, where we learn little about our main characters and their backstories. Amanda wrote three different personalities so well that I was invested in their stories from the beginning.
Imogen is a little grumpy and fighting her fear of her nature and magic, but she has a great sense of humor, and her snarky comments are pure gold.
Carmen is a sunshine character, but later in the book, she also shows more complex emotions. She is so driven that even I feel motivated to do something with my life.
Lulu is the only human among our main characters, but she is not scared, and her humor makes me laugh so many times throughout the book.
After the first few pages, I thought, “This will be a cute little witchy mystery”—nothing hard on my feelings, nothing too special. Oh, how wrong I was… After cutesy scenes with sisters and their family, I was introduced to the frightening reality that this book may have a lot of banter and funny characters, but in its core it is still a horror story. Amanda’s ability to write genuinely scary scenes had me considering putting the book down for a moment… And yes, that scene is when we meet the villain of the story, the Thistle Witch, for the first time.
I will have a little sidestep here. The scene with the bogeyman is so unnerving that, as the mother of two boys, it made my anxiety fly through the roof. There’s nothing more important than our health (mental or physical), and although this book is not as dark as many others, it is still partly horror, so this is a special warning: Please ensure you read the trigger warning at the beginning of the book before you start.
Let’s continue… As the story continues, we will also see some scenes from Thistle Witch’s point of view, which I found interesting as it is quite unsettling to delve into the antagonist’s mind. Amanda’s display of the villain, who is not a villain by choice but by nature, was exceptionally well-executed.
Side characters and spoiler section:
The special mention of the introduction of cute little pocket demons (some little scary, some little assholes ?) was genius. I loved to read about them. They are like little Pokémons that adore mostly only Carmen because she is so sunshiny that she loves even those that are prickly little bastards.
I loved all the characters in the book and was hooked from the beginning, and they are the main reasons I gave this book 5-star reviews, even though the plot’s resolution seems to me a little rushed. But it did not cut from the story, so I am okay with that. The ending was really emotional for me, which is token of how well Amanda wrote these characters.
Overall, this is a wickedly funny, spooky read that balances humor and horror in a way that will keep you turning pages. Perfect for fans of quirky paranormal mysteries who don’t mind a dash of darkness, it’s a book I’m eager to revisit when the sequel comes out!
This is the perfect book for the spooky season. This read was a slight departure from my usual, at least the first third. Once I passed that, I was fully committed. My favorite part is that the FMC was actually in her thirties, not a teenager!
Synopsis: Imogen Abernathy is over magic and her family’s monster-hunting drama—until her sister Carmen has a ghostly mishap that drags her back home. Now, they’re stuck investigating a string of murders tied to the elusive (and seriously creepy) Thistle Witch, forcing Imogen to brush off her witchy skills, face some questionable spells, and hope they don’t all end up as the next items on the Thistle Witch’s hit list.
You should read if: • You’re a fan of the Chilling Adventures of Sabrina the Teenage Witch, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, or Charmed (gives those vibes) • You love a good sister bond, especially if they fight monsters together • You love a secret world of witches and creatures • You enjoy elements of found family, nightmares that may be real, and the survival of the family business. And maybe a tiny bit of a hero’s journey.
You should not read it: • You’re scared of the monsters in your closet and some gory imagery • You can’t fill in a couple of small gaps or let go of minor nuances • You are looking for a really strong world build for whatever this series will become
I was lucky enough to get an ARC from The Nerd Fam, and I can’t thank them enough for this escape from reality. It also means many of you may not have read it yet, so you should know it is out now!
I have seen a lot of comparisons to Gilmore Girls and Sabrina on here and whilst I can't comment on Sabrina (haven't seen it), I can confirm that the sarcastic wit of Lorelai permeates this novel and stands out in Imogen and Carmen's conversations which was fun to read.
I also feel that it reminds me a bit of Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Supernatural (earlier seasons), where there are supernatural elements with a cast of funny characters that hunt down the evils that lurk in the dark. It actually surprised me by the gore displayed in some scenes as I was expecting more of a light-hearted cosy witchy investigative novel, but it was a nice balance. I also think that, in particular, the brotherly dynamic loved in Supernatural is shown here with the two sisters, Imogen and Carmen, and their navigation through the family business of Otherwordly Investigations.
I have a feeling that this series will blossom from here on out and will only continue to improve. My only critique for this novel was that the cast of characters was huge, and so it could get a little confusing at times. This could be helped by reducing the amounts of characters or by having character pov's clearly stated within the chapter's title.
I wish this could be a graphic novel series - I think it's begging for it!!
This is definitely a cosy, autumnal read by candlelight, perfect for this time of year.
Thank you to The Nerd Fam for the gifted ARC. #adevilineverydarkcorner #thenerdfam @thenerdfam.
What a super fun book to read! I’m not sure if anyone remembers the show The Secret World of Alex Mack. (If you don’t, I’m probably that old). I say that show due to the odd supernatural elements that happen in the book. I feel like it’s a mix of that show plus Sabrina and Gilmore Girls. It’s a touch of all that mixed together. I think a lot of the reviews do agree that it’s a mix of the other two due to the banter in the story. You’ve got two sisters stopping an entity. I enjoyed the humor and banter between the two sisters, which is why it reminds me of the two sisters in Sabrina, The Teenage Witch. They’re pretty much going at it. I really wasn’t sure what I was getting myself into when I started reading this book, but it was not what I expected. This was a fun take when it comes to paranormal books. A lot of books that I have read were not this fun to read. It’s different, and a lot more light hearted, despite it having gore. The beginning was a bit slow, but it starts to catch up. I also enjoyed that the characters were not young and that they were far older. It’s a lot easier to relate to. Overall, it’s a great book to pick up this season!
4.5/5 ⭐️ A Devil in Every Dark Corner by Amanda Braun Boe
Thank you to The Nerd Fam for the gifted ARC.
A Devil in Every Dark Corner is the first book in the Otherworldly Investigations series (at least I hope it's the first of many, lol). The story follows Imogen Abernathy, a witch who is tired of magic and her family's monster-hunting business, Otherworldly Investigations. However, when her sister, Carmen, gets herself into a bit of a magical trouble, Imogen is forced to return home and use her magic. Together, they begin investigating a series of murders linked to a powerful and dangerous entity called the Thistle Witch.
This was a fun and perfect read for the spooky season of the year. I had a blast reading this one. I'll be honest, I found it scary because I don't read a lot of paranormal fiction, but I also had a lot of fun reading this book. It's got magic, witches, cute little demons, and a few other scary and cute supernatural beings. The characters were quirky and lovable. Carmen and her little demons were my absolute favorite! I would honestly watch a show about his hehe! 👻🎃
Book Review: A Devil in Every Dark Corner by Amanda Braun Boe ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

When I saw Sabrina meets Gilmore Girls, I knew I had to pick this up! This book nails the perfect blend of cozy small-town charm and supernatural intrigue—an ideal read for Halloween season.
The story follows sisters Imogen and Carmen as they reconnect to take on their biggest case yet. The world is packed with quirky magical elements, from their familiars, Buster Keaton and Norma Shearer (bonus points for magical cats!), to multiple pocket demons that I now need in my life.
The cast of magical creatures includes everything from reformed minotaurs to dairy-loving fairies—and even a demonic ex (hey, don’t we all have one of those?). Imogen and Carmen’s bond brings real warmth to the story as they embrace each other’s quirks. With kooky parents and the ever-ready Lulu, it’s got all the charm of Gilmore Girls with a spooky twist.
This story hit all the right notes for me: fun, eerie, and full of heart. I loved every part of it, and I can’t wait to see where the sisters’ next adventure takes them!
This book was exactly what I was wanting right now. I had been reading a lot of hard hitting horrors so one with an element of humor was perfect. I would describe this book as a mix between Sabrina the Teenage Witch and Scooby doo but with real monsters and gore. I loved the sisterhood elements throughout the book. I loved that one sister was full of whimsy and optimism and one was more down to earth but still had a great sense of humor. It was such a fun dynamic. The human companion being new to the whole monster hunting world was a great addition to the story. I think the author made great use of multi-pov. Sometimes I feel like multiple pov’s can drag on or feel unnecessary but I was truly interested each time it switched. This book had the perfect amount of comedy mixed in with the plot and gore to make it a fast read that didn’t feel too heavy. I adored the relationships that were developed in this book and am so glad it is a series because I want more of Carmen and Imogen immediately!
Thank you to The Nerd Fam for the gifted copy of A Devil in Every Dark Corner by Amanda Braun Boe!
A Devil in Every Dark Corner is a fun, magical mystery that blends humor, heart, and supernatural intrigue. Imogen (Immy) thought she left behind her family’s monster-hunting business, but when her perfect sister Carmen calls her back, she’s forced to confront old demons—both personal and magical. Together, the sisters take on a tricky new case involving a masked killer, a strange dog, and unsettling family secrets.
This witty story mixes witches, ghosts, fairies, and cryptids with modern pop-culture humor, making it feel like Chilling Adventures of Sabrina meets Gilmore Girls. The banter between Immy and Carmen adds charm, while quirky, misunderstood monsters (and cats!) bring a lighthearted touch to the spooky moments.
With a mix of magic, mystery, and family drama, Amanda Braun Boe has created an entertaining start to what promises to be a delightful series. If you love witchy mysteries with heart and humor, this book is a must-read.
