Imitation of Love

Rate this book
When Catherine Willoughby's brother is killed, leaving Catherine and her younger sister, Alyssa, penniless and without a home, she wonders how they will survive.

Jimmy had been working with the dashing 'Captain' helping French aristocrats escape the guillotine, but it is the shallow dandy Xander Oakley who steps in to help the girls. As Catherine spends more time with him, she realises there is more to Oakley than meets the eye. But will he still want to help Catherine and Alyssa when he finds out the truth about a letter he received from Jimmy Willoughby?

As Catherine begins to fall for Oakley, everything is at stake and she finds herself pitched headlong into danger.

A short but action-packed historical novella, set during the French revolution. Catherine is the heroine, strong-minded and intelligent, and she rather despises Mr Oakley, her brother's wealthy friend.

After a family tragedy they're drawn together, and there are inevitable clashes and misunderstandings typical in a light story of this type. But the main characters are sympathetically drawn and three-dimensional, and the writing is fast-paced and very readable. The eventual outcome is predictable, but the climax is tense and makes the book almost impossible to put down.

Only available for the Kindle, as far as I know.

This is a short love story with spies, murder, lies and other outrageous episodes. For the length of the book it was filled in well enough without being more detailed. A nice one sitting read.
