About the author

P. Kesavadev, was a novelist and social reformer of Kerala state, South India. He is remembered for his speeches, autobiographies, novels, dramas, short stories, and films.
Odayil Ninnu, Nadhi, Bhrandalayam, Ayalkar (Central Academi Award winning novel), Ethirppu (autobiography) and Oru Sundariyude Athmakadha are some among his 128 literary works. Kesavadev along with Thakazhi Sivasankara Pillai and Vaikom Muhammad Basheer are considered the exponents of progressive Malayalam Literature.

" അതേ. ആരു പറഞ്ഞാലും അനുസരിക്കുന്ന ആളല്ല അയാൾ. അനുസരിക്കാൻ ശീലിച്ചിട്ടില്ലാത്ത മനസ്സാണത്. ആരുടെ മുൻപിലും കുനിഞ്ഞിട്ടില്ലാത്ത ശിരസ്സാണത്. പരാന്നത്തിന്റെ സ്പർശംപോലും ഏറ്റിട്ടില്ലാത്ത വയറാണത്. "

The character pappu will sink deep with you...
we will be able to feel the characters and at times go through their thoughts and feelings... i bet atleast for a pretty long time it will stick in your mind...

പ്രസിദ്ധീകരിച്ചു വർഷങ്ങൾ കഴിഞ്ഞ ശേഷവും ഈ നോവലിൽ പരാമർശിക്കുന്ന സന്ദർഭവും സംഭവങ്ങളും ഇപ്പോഴും നമ്മുടെ സമൂഹത്തിൽ നമുക്ക് കാണാൻ സാധിക്കുന്നതാണ്. എന്നാൽ പ്രതിസന്ധികൾക്കു മുന്നിൽ തളരാത്ത, ആത്മാഭിമാനത്തിന്റെ പ്രതീകമായ പപ്പു എന്ന മനോധൈര്യത്തിനെ ആരും ശരിയായ രീതിയിൽ ഉൾക്കൊണ്ടിട്ടില്ല എന്നതാണ് വർത്തമാനകാല സമൂഹത്തിൽ നമുക്ക് കാണാൻ കഴിയുക. അതെ, സത്യമാണ് ഞാൻ പറഞ്ഞത്. ജീവിതത്തിനോടും വിധിയോടും പടവെട്ടുവാനുള്ള ആത്മധൈര്യം നമുക്കു കൈമോശം വന്നുകൊണ്ടിരിക്കുന്നു.

ഇന്നും സമൂഹത്തിലെ മലീനസമായ അന്തരീക്ഷങ്ങളിൽ "ലക്ഷ്മിമാർ" കുഴികളിൽ വീണുകൊണ്ടിരിക്കുന്നു. "കല്യാണി"മാർ ഇന്നും വാതിലിനു പിന്നിൽ നിന്നും തലമാത്രം പുറത്തിടുന്നു; തലപുറത്തിട്ടവർക്കു ശകാരവർഷം മാത്രം. തുല്യാവകാശമുള്ള പാതയിൽ തലയുയർത്തി നടക്കുവാൻ ഇന്നും അവരുടെയുള്ളിലെ അവർ തലമുറകളായി കൊണ്ടുനടക്കുന്ന ചില പിന്തിരിപ്പൻ "ദുരാഭിമാനങ്ങൾ"അവരെ അനുവദിക്കുന്നില്ല.

പ്രതീകാത്മകമായ എന്നാൽ തികച്ചും അനാവശ്യമായ സൈക്കിൾ റിക്ഷകൾ നാം ഇന്നും ചവിട്ടിക്കൊണ്ടിരിക്കുന്നു. എന്നാൽ ശരിയായ പാത കണ്ടെത്താതെ നാം വിഷമിക്കുന്നു, പലപ്പോഴും പകുതി ദൂരത്തിൽ തളർന്നു വീഴുന്നു.

പപ്പുവിന്റെ ആദർശവും ധീരതയും നമ്മിലെ കഴിവുകളെ ഉണർത്തുക തന്നെ ചെയ്യും. വളരെ ചെറിയ ഒരു നോവൽ പെട്ടെന്ന് തന്നെ നമുക്ക് വായിച്ചു ഹൃദയത്തിലേറ്റാൻ കഴിയും.

കരുത്തുറ്റ ഒരു കഥാപാത്രത്തിന്റെ ഹൃദയഭേദകമായ കഥ മാത്രമല്ല 'ഓടയിൽ നിന്ന്'. സമൂഹത്തിലെ സവർണ-ഉന്നത-മേലാള കഥാപാത്രങ്ങൾ മാത്രം കഥാനായകരായി വിലസിയിരുന്ന ലോകത്തേക്കുള്ള അദ്ധ്വാനിക്കുന്നവൻറെ കടന്നുകയറ്റം കൂടിയാണ്. നാലുകെട്ടിലെയും ബംഗ്ളാവിലെയും നായകന്മാരുടെ അച്ചിട്ടു വാർത്ത കഥാപാത്ര രൂപീകരണത്തിന്റെ നെഞ്ചിൽ കതിന പൊട്ടിച്ചാണ് വിയർപ്പു കൊണ്ട് ഉണ്ണുന്ന, അഭിമാനം മാത്രം കൈമുതലായുള്ള, ക്ഷുഭിത വികാരങ്ങളുടെ കെട്ടഴിച്ചു വിടുന്ന, കോമളവദനനല്ലാത്ത നായകനെ കേശവദേവ് മലയാള നോവൽ വഴിയിൽ പ്രതിഷ്ഠിച്ചത്.

ഒരു വേള വായനക്കാരന് അനഭിമതനായി തോന്നുന്ന ബാല്യകാല സ്വഭാവമുള്ള നായകൻ മുതിർന്നു കഴിഞ്ഞും പ്രിയങ്കരനാകുന്നില്ല. അയാളുടെ മാനുഷിക മുഖം അനാവൃതമാകുന്നത് വരെ അയാളോട് വായനക്കാരന് സന്ദേഹം കലർന്ന അടുപ്പം മാത്രമേ തോന്നൂ. എന്നാൽ അയാൾ മറ്റുള്ളവർക്ക് വേണ്ടി തന്നെത്തന്നെ ഹോമിക്കുമ്പോൾ വായനക്കാരന് അത് നെഞ്ചോട് ചേർക്കാതെ തരമില്ല.

കേശവദേവിന്റെ ഏറ്റവും മികച്ച സൃഷ്ടിയായി വിലയിരുത്തുന്ന ഈ നോവൽ വായിക്കുമ്പോൾ മനസ്സിൽ അനശ്വര നടൻ സത്യൻ മാഷിന്റെ മുഖം തെളിയുന്നത് ആ കഥാപാത്രത്തെ നമുക്കിടയിൽ പ്രതിഷ്ഠിക്കുന്നതിൽ അദ്ദേഹം നേടിയ വിജയം മൂലമാണെന്ന് ഞാൻ കരുതുന്നു.

രാജാക്കന്മാരുടെയും വീരനായകന്മാരുടെയും കഥകൾ കേട്ടു പരിചിതമായ സമയത്ത് സാഹിത്ത്യത്തിന്റെ നവോത്ഥാന കാലഘട്ടമായി കരുതി പച്ചയായ മനുഷ്യന്റെ ജീവിതം പറയുന്ന കൃതി. സമൂഹത്തിന്റെ താഴത്തെ തട്ടിൽ ജീവിക്കുന്ന തൊഴിലാളി വർഗ്ഗത്തിന്റെ പ്രതിനിധിയാണ് നായകനായ പപ്പു. കഠിനാദ്ധ്യാനം ചെയ്തും സത്യസന്ധത പുലർത്തിയും ജീവിക്കുന്നവരുടെ ആത്മാഭിമാനത്തിന്റെ പ്രതീകം.
സമൂഹത്തിൽ നിലനിന്നിരുന്ന അനാസ്ഥകളെ ചോദ്യം ചെയ്യപ്പെട്ടുകൊണ്ട് പള്ളിക്കുടവും, വീടും, നാടും ഉപേക്ഷിച്ച് നഗരത്തിലെത്തി പല ജോലികൾക്കു ശേഷം റിക്ഷാ തൊഴിലാളിയായി. ലക്ഷ്യമോധമില്ലാതെ സഞ്ചരിച്ച ജീവിതത്തിന് ലക്ഷ്യ ബോധം ഉണ്ടായത് ലക്ഷ്മിയെ കണ്ടുമുട്ടുന്നത് മുതലാണ്. ലക്ഷ്മിയുടെ അമ്മയും കഥയിൽ തക്കതായ പ്രധാന്യമുണ്ട്. അതിഥി വേഷത്തിലെത്തുന്ന ഗോപിയും ഒഴിച്ചു കൂടാനാകാത്ത സംഭാവന നല്കുന്നുണ്ട്.

ജന്മം കൊണ്ട് മഹത്വം ലഭിച്ചിരുന്ന ഒരു കാലത്തിൽ, കർമ്മത്തിന്റെ മാഹാത്മ്യം വിളിച്ചോതിയ കാലത്തിവർത്ഥിയായ ഒരു ഹൃദ്യമായ കഥയാണ് കേശവദേവ് ഇവിടെ പറയുന്നത്. ആത്മാഭിമാനമുള്ള, സ്വന്തം അധ്വാനം കൊണ്ട് ജീവിക്കുന്ന, അനീതിക്കു മുന്നിൽ മുട്ടുമടക്കാൻ മനസില്ലാത്ത ഒരു ജനതക്ക് അപ്പു തങ്ങളിൽ ഒരാളായി തോന്നും എന്നത് ഒരത്ഭുതമേ അല്ല. അപ്പു കഴിഞ്ഞാൽ കഥയിലെ ഏറ്റവും ആകർഷിച്ച മറ്റൊരു കഥാപാത്രമാണ് ഗോപി. കുറെ പരീക്ഷ പാസ്സായാൽ മാത്രം പോരാ, ശരിയായ വിദ്യാഭ്യാസം ലഭിച്ച ഒരാൾ എങ്ങിനെയാകണം എന്ന് ഗോപി കാട്ടിത്തരുന്നു. ഈ കഥയിലെ പല സന്ദർഭങ്ങളും മനസ്സിൽ നിന്നും മായാൻ കാലം ഏറെ എടുക്കും, അത്രയേറെ ഇഷ്ടപ്പെട്ടു.

റിക്ഷാ തൊഴിലാഴി നായകനായ ആദ്യ ഗ്രന്ഥം. ഇതൊരു ഇതിഹാസ ഗ്രന്ഥമാണ്, അതറിയണമെങ്കില്‍ റഫീക്ക് അഹ്മദിന്റെ അഴുക്കില്ലം ​എന്ന ഗ്രന്ഥം വായിച്ചുനോക്കിയാല്‍ മതി.

"Odayil Ninnu" is one of those novels that leaves a quiet ache long after you’ve turned the final page. It doesn’t shout. It doesn’t over-explain. It simply follows one man — Pappu, a humble rickshaw puller — and through his eyes, makes you feel the weight of injustice, pride, and dignity like very few stories can.

When I read it, I wasn’t prepared for how real it would feel. The language, though literary, flows with the raw simplicity of a man who has nothing but his strength and his principles. Pappu is not educated, not powerful, not from any noble lineage. But what he has is a burning sense of self-respect — a refusal to bow down, even when the entire system tries to crush him. He is angry, but that anger isn’t reckless — it’s born from a lifetime of humiliation and survival.

What moved me most is how Kesavadev doesn’t romanticize poverty. He writes it as it is: unforgiving, exhausting, and yet, filled with small moments of defiance. There’s beauty in how Pappu adopts a child — not out of charity, but out of love. He gives without fanfare. He sacrifices without being praised. And in doing so, he becomes greater than most “heroes” in literature.

Reading Odayil Ninnu was an emotional experience — one that stayed with me in quiet, reflective moments. It reminded me of people I’ve seen in real life. The nameless workers who sleep on footpaths after long shifts. The auto drivers with sunburnt arms and kind eyes. The ones we pass by every day without noticing — and yet whose lives are filled with silent strength.

This novel isn’t just about class struggle. It’s about human worth, about how some of the most honorable lives are lived in the shadows. And in a society that often defines people by wealth, caste, or education, Odayil Ninnu dares to say: dignity belongs to all.

It’s a Malayalam classic, yes — but it’s also timeless. And for me, reading it was like sitting beside an old storyteller by a fire, being reminded of the value of stubborn pride, silent kindness, and the kind of humanity that doesn’t ask for recognition. Just the right to exist.
