Why I chose to read this book: It was gifted to me several years ago by an Australian couple who were on a teacher exchange at the school I taught at. They knew I enjoyed reading picture books to my young students.
Praises: Since I was substitute teaching a Grade 1 class recently, I read this book aloud to the students. Here are their thoughts: 1. they liked the repetitive chant and often joined in; 2. some commented that they enjoyed learning about an Australian animal (possum) and that they learned a new word - "tuckshop" (Australian slang for a canteen, a concession stand, or a cafeteria); 3. "I thought it was funny and kind of crazy!" 4. "It was fun guessing which room the possum would run to next." 5. "I liked the colorful pictures!" and, 6. "I'm glad that the possum got to stay in a tree on the playground."
Niggle: One student was disappointed that no music room was featured in this school (Note: our school does have a music room!)
Overall Thoughts: An excellent read aloud for ages 4-7 about a possum who accidently gets into a school and creates havoc amid various rooms to the dismay of the staff but to the delight of its students. Its repetitiveness and its lovely, gentle initiation to Australian flora and fauna and school culture keep young readers engaged.
This book is a lot of fun. It has repeatable, predictable dialogue for the children being read to to chorus. There's an element of slaptick that appeals and a cute possum. It's not a deep and meaningful one, granted but it is a lot of fun!
This was a wonderful picture book to read to kindergarten to help them understand ‘big school’. The children couldn’t wait to see what would happen next!
I liked this book enough to read again but more for a relaxing book to read because it was pretty easy to read for me.
summery of possum goes to school: the possum came into a school and played with all different kinds of things and kept going to a different room the teacher did not like the possum but the kids did like it.
High lights -Loved the picture’s. -when it left some things a surprise. -it was easy to read so for me it was relaxing.
You can tell by the state of my copy that this book has seen some mileage! It's actually a story from my childhood, and it has proven just as popular with my Kinder children.
"Possum Goes to School" by Melanie Carter is a delightful story of absolute chaos 😆 My Kinders love chiming in with the repeated phrases, and watching the entertaining narrative unfold. It's also a good way to introduce them to the various classes/rooms they'll encounter at Big School.
