TERRITORY Book One: The Red Thunder Clan

Rate this book
The rogue vampire factions of North America have come under the scrutiny of the 13th Coven, the ruling class of vampire society; a rapidly failing leadership quickly losing control over their kind. They have begun to seek new lands dangerously close to the borders of three werewolf clans of the three breeds.
Leading the endeavor is a fallen Red Marshal of the 13th Coven with her own agenda that could ignite a war. She is pursued by the werewolves of The Red Thunder Clan as well as a pack of Pure-Bloods; vampires sworn to hunt and destroy their own kind. Allied with an army of diseased and exiled vampires known as Shadow-Walkers, the fallen Red Marshal Sophia will stop at nothing in her quest to wage war against The Red Thunder Clan and any who stand against her; werewolf and vampire alike.

Mason Balfour's 'The TERRITORY Anthology' weaves an elaborate and epic tale of horror, suspense and drama unlike others of the genre. It offers a fresh look at the werewolf/vampire myths and legends of history, literature and film while giving fans and readers what they expect from the genre.
'TERRITORY' is a worth-while read for any fan of the genre, but will appeal most strongly to fans of 'BLADE', 'UNDERWORLD', 'TRUE BLOOD' and the 'WEREWOLF: the APOCALYPSE' mythology. 'TERRITORY' has been described as "Bloody and unrelenting! Every bit as entertaining and thrilling as 'UNDERWORLD' A must-read for werewolf and vampire fans." It's a hard, fast and brutal story packed with action and bloody violence, but maintains a careful balance with well-paced drama and well-crafted characters; all of which is sure to captivate the reader from the very first page and not let go.
The story is set primarily in the state of Washington and the state of Oregon and makes careful, extensive and deliberate use of real geography in the story telling to add a texture of realism, believability and authenticity seldom seen in stories of its kind.
If you're a hard-core fan of the genre or reading for the first time, you're sure to become a fan of the 'TERRITORY' anthology!

About the author

I love werewolves and vampires. I always have. But I got tired of two things: sexy, slick “teenage” vampires in love and the idea of werewolves being nothing more than rabid wild animals on the loose that must be identified as the local school teacher or priest and dispatched by the townsfolk before the credits roll. I love all of that stuff, but it seems to be the standard. I wanted to write something different. I wanted to write something more layered and interesting with deeper characters.
“TERRITORY” is more like a modern version of “Lord of the Rings”. I tried to break away from, or at least alter in some interesting way, the stereotypes of these two mythological icons. The best attempts at this which I have seen seem to be in games like ‘Skyrim’ and ‘Werewolf: the Apocalypse’. I wanted to take this series to that level of depth and complexity, but I also wanted to add what I had personally always wanted from the genre. I was also careful to retain nearly every iteration of the folklore of these characters so that no fan would be left out, no matter what their favorite version of werewolves and vampires may be. Whether you love wealthy, aristocratic vampires of the ruling class, ravenous and corpse-like monsters feeding in the shadows or anything in between, “TERRITORY” has it covered. You’ll find four very different breeds of werewolves, as well. They range from the stoic and regal warrior class of the Kriegswölfe to the classic rampaging beasts of the Vierfussen….. and everything in between. I left nothing to chance and I left NO fan out in the cold. And holding myself to this set of criteria made for a much richer and layered story, guiding me toward creative choices that I may not have discovered otherwise.
I hope I’ve managed to strike the chord I was aiming for. And I hope you guys enjoy reading it as much as I enjoyed writing it.

This review is from: TERRITORY Book One: The Red Thunder Clan (Volume 1) (Paperback)
I loved it. There was action and suspense but also emotion and sensitivity. I was amazed at how the characters-- human, werewolf and vampire-- each had their own compelling story that made me love or hate them. Also, the scenery, sounds and other details were described with awesome detail that made it come alive. Great book! I devoured it.

Mason Balfour's ‘TERRITORY Book One: The Red Thunder Clan’ is a must-read for werewolf and vampire fans alike. It is not a Twilight knock off, it is an edgy action/horror read with its fast and brutal story packed with action and bloody violence, carefully balanced with a well developed story line and characters; all of which captivated me from the moment I picked the book up.

This book was great. The Werewolfs and Vampires are usually good or bad as a whole, in this book the author has made even the bad guy (vampires) have good ones along with the really bad ones. I loved the book an can't wait for book two.
