Apprenticeship in Literacy: Transitions Across Reading and Writing, K-4

Since its publication in 1998, Apprenticeship in Literacy has become a teacher favorite, covering all aspects of a balanced literacy program in an integrated manner and showing how all components are differentiated to address the needs of diverse learners. An apprenticeship approach to literacy emphasizes the role of the teacher in providing demonstrations, engaging children, monitoring their understanding, providing timely support, and ultimately withdrawing that support as the child gains independence.

So, I’ve never actually read Apprenticeship in Literacy cover to cover. I’ve just read parts of it that were flagged in trainings. I learned a lot and flagged several more notes for teaching next year. I only wish it had gone deeper into language workshop. I’m still not sure that I understand carrying out this taint in the school day and how it’s different from reader’s workshop.

This is great for reading instruction. It's a second edition, so I'm not certain what changes were made since the first publication, but there are great resources here for early elementary teachers of reading.
