The poems Whiteman dedicates to family members, children, ancestors of hers were especially poignant.
My favorite poems of the collection: Dreaming In Broad Daylight, Acknowledgment, Home Before Dark, Black Out, Of light, Water and Gathered Dust, Van Gogh, Break Through, A Presence that Found Me Again, Again, No Longer, Silence
"Rising in the quiet dark, the morning star takes
the torturous errors of this haunted world
and changes them to wings. My adolescence clings
like a burr against my heart. In this life,
we walk a spiral way and must return
to that ecstacy burning in our youth.
Sometimes when you stand in the corridor
of my dreams, your black eyes awaken
forgotten rhythms in my blood.
I long to escape to the sea, for only
the hiss, the crash of surf can stop my dreaming
in broad daylight."
