As a first lady, a senator, and secretary of state, Hillary Clinton has long been one of the nation's most influential political figures. Readers will follow along with this incredible leader's life story, from her childhood and earliest political activity to her recent activities as secretary of state.
I love Hillary and reading the quick and easy to read beginner biography was fun and made me wish she was still in office. When I read this quick and easy biographies, I often learn more from them on a basic level than I do from big books and adult books. The information in this book was mostly bullet points and quick and easy sentences, and it talks about her life as a child, as a student, and as a politician. I really like that there are bold words that meant to teach vocabulary skill and teach new words. For example, On page 25, the words testified and Task Force are both bolded and then explained in the back glossary. I read this book with two of my literacy students, and giving them vocal word was made really easy as both students enjoyed being able to pick from the bolded words. I love Hillary and enjoyed reading this book and remembering that she went to Yale!
This solid biography covers Clinton's childhood, early career, life as the First Lady, as Senator of New York, and her just-ended term as Secretary of State. Also covered is her bid for the 2008 presidency, and the possibility that she will run again in 2016. Information is presented objectively and in an engaging voice. Abundant full-color photos with captions show Clinton in her various roles and nicely complement the text. A timeline details her travels during 2012 as Secretary of State, and backmatter includes statistics, glossary, index, and further reading. A great choice for reports or for students who wish to learn more about this energetic politician.
Fact: I did not know that previous first ladies had their offices’ in the East Wing of the White House and that Hillary was the first to set hers up in the West Wing.
Hillary proved herself to be a leader from the start. Adviser to the Children’s Defense Fund, leader of the Task Force on National Health Care Reform, first woman elected to represent the state of New York in the U.S. Senate are among many impressive ventures on her resume. This book provides a great foundation to this key figure in U.S. politics and would be great for kids to read as an introduction to Hillary Rodham Clinton.
I have read a few of the A True Book series for young readers and have enjoyed them all. Each has a wonderful kid friendly layout with nice photographs, interesting facts, timelines, lists for additional resources, and a glossary of important key words. This would be a wonderful addition to any elementary or middle school library or classroom.
