A pictoral history of mansions in the US.
Outstanding photos and historical narrative, including insight on the owners and times. Spans time from post Civil War starting the opulent wealth, through the Gilded Age to the stockmarket crash which ended the wealth. Includes the Wetmore house in Newport, RI.

I got the book mostly for the pictures. There's text giving a tantalizing small bit about each house, enough to make me hunt down a book or two about some of the individual houses.

It's fun to imagine having the kind of money and taste to decorate such mansions.
