MIA Case Files; Previous Blood Relations

Fantasy Paranormal

On a mission tracking down werewolves, a mishap disables Agent Brandon Ellison, rendering him unfit for field duty. Unable to deal with the repercussions of the accident, Brandon moves away and Oliver Cardoso not only loses his partner, but his lover. Years later, when Brandon returns as head of MIA's Research and Development team, the hurt, guilt and blame fester into jealousy and professional rivalry, making working together almost impossible.

When an equipment failure almost kills Oliver, it appears as though Brandon's executing some sort of revenge. Determined to find out the truth, Brandon invites himself along on his first mission in years, with Oliver and his new partner. With an elusive portal and the Umbrae creating a previously unknown creature, hundreds of lives, including Oliver's, are at stake. Although their attraction hasn't waned in the intervening years, putting aside their differences creates a potentially fatal distraction and falling in love again might destroy them both.

These are just some notes I'm takin to track as i read

So Oliver is 43 and joined MIA a little over 7 years ago (little over seven is later clarified as being there for over nine years, so he would be 34 or so). Making him 36 when he joined. Wtf did he do before that? How can MIA be the only thing in his life? Now he's feeling too old forMIA, isn't 36 34 a little old to be a new recruit?

The beginning didn't draw me in at all. Quite the opposite. Oliver in the bathroom fantasizing about Carmichael (mc from book 2) was a real turn off. And it just dragged on with the thoughts going from annoying to just pointless, IMO

Omg!!! The most interesting thing to happen, Adam confronting Carmichael, and Oliver just walks away so the reader doesn't even see it.

Flashbacks- hate them. Fantasy sex in a flash back! How does that further the story at all? I'm very bored with the start of this one. I also don't care to read but Oliver on dates with other guys, or where he usually goes to find his hookups. This is just moving so slow and all most all of the thoughts are about sex or how hard they are in their pants... Can we get on to the plot sometime soon?

Brandon in current times says he is 35. So 7 years ago he would be 28... But they met 9 years ago, so he started when he was 26.

Oliver decides not to tell Brandon he is a slut, but for some reason the reader had to read all about his slutiness? Not sure why we can't be left in the dark. I'm really wishing I would have skipped this flashback. So far it's had no point and jut makes me not like Oliver

Oh joy they meet in flash back and are instantly all over each other. I can't see a connection between them at all. They're both hot, that's all the connection reader needs to know

Eh flash back sex at 16% :( skimmed it, was still bored. This is about to he marked dnf ... At least Brandon's reasoning for thinking slutty Oliver wouldn't think twice before fucking someone else's boyfriend makes sense now.

It's really repetitive. Keeps saying the same thing and they think the same thoughts. I've been skimming over huge chunks of boring character thoughts e cause they're the same ones I already read

Oh 20% and switch to Brandon so he can count the guys he's slept with in the room. Then e has a super boring flash back that was so boring even skimming I just decided to give up in this one.

I'm not seeing any chemistry or anything in these guys. An no plot advancement or anything to make me want to read on. And I was so so tired of reading about the throbbing bulges in their pants.

DNF at 34%

Might check Bubbles's review since he wrote what I thought.

The writing didn't pull me in. The characters were bland. I didn't feel any chemistry at all (even if they were said to be lovers for two years before broke up and separated for the past seven years). Oh, and the flashback written as current reverie wasn't one that I enjoy these days (and there were couple of those, before I even hit 30% mark).

Read the last chapter (Epilogue) hoping that it would be help to motivate me to continue ... nope, didn't work. Not at all. So I gave up.

Which was sad, since I seemed to enjoy the previous two books. Or, maybe, I was still on an "m/m loving" sugar high back then (I read those books in 2010).

Maybe it would work for someone else. I am certain there would be others who love this. But with my very picky and current cranky mood with published m/m stories in general, it's not appealing enough to make me keep reading.

Unbelievable Plot...Hot Sex!

3.5 Stars

This started out with a rough beginning: lots of confusion and flashbacks. Like the previous two books, the world building is still lacking. It's PNR and the characters were in a dangerous situation but I never felt the sense of fear or urgency. Instead, their biggest concern was fucking like bunnies!

But I did enjoy it over all. I needed something simple and easy and this fit my mood. The hot, angry sex and dirty talk are worth 5 stars alone!
"Director...I know what you look like when you sleep. The songs you sing in the shower. I know you like extra sugar atop sugary breakfast cereal, but take your coffee strong and black. I know the shape and length of your dick. I remember the way your body feels between my legs...and the way your legs fit around my body. I know the taste of your jizz. I know what sounds you make when you come. The sounds you make when I've got my tongue up your ass. I know the heat of you stretching around my cock." ~ Oliver

It didn't suck, it wasn't great. That about sums it up. Another book with the premise...if they had just talked a little more.... I do love me some noisy man sex though. Yum! Also loved that one of the MCs was over 40. Makes it just a tad more interesting to me. This was another mission in the fight again the Umbrae and how the MIA works to get it all done. Entertaining but probably not memorable.

Soooo.... I appreciate the premise of the story, but the execution didn't quite work for me. For a group of individuals who spend their time hunting scary monsters, the MIA agents have very poor situational awareness. The agents acted a bit like a group of teenagers hunting ghosts, and the big reveal felt like the end of a Scooby Doo cartoon.

The connection between Oliver and Brandon felt a little manufactured. The reader is told that they were close, but I just didn't feel it. The sex scenes were prolific and probably steamy for most people, but I didn't appreciate them because I didn't feel an emotional connection between Brandon and Oliver.

Overall this was a decent read. I suspect this was one of the author's early books because I have enjoyed some of their other books much more.

My advice at the end of my review for Blood Relations was to overlook the book's shortcomings (e.g., the lack of a developed back story) and focus on the sweetness between the MCs. Unfortunately, that is not possible here. In Craving, Burn burns the candle at both ends so to speak (no pun intended): the undeveloped back story is so riddled with contradictions it defies reason and for the first time, Burn's MCs fall short.

Seven years ago, Agents Brandon Ellison and Oliver Cardoso were MIA partners and lovers. A sonic charge mishap rendered Brandon hearing impaired and therefore unfit for field duty. Incapable of dealing with the repercussions of the accident, Brandon flees to the other side of the country, leaving Oliver devastated, guilt-ridden, and lonesome. When Brandon returns as head of MIA’s Research and Development team, an equipment failure almost kills Oliver and his partner (Carmichael). Determined to find out the truth about the equipment failure that occurred on his watch, Brandon invites himself along on a field mission with Oliver and his new partner.

I've said it before and I'll say it again: K.C. Burn has the ability to create engaging MCs, so much so you're able to overlook the shoddy back story of the MIA, Umbrae, and portals. (And it's pretty shoddy.) Unfortunately, this time she missed the mark IMHO. While I loved Oliver, I really disliked Brandon. Sure, the fact that he is permanently hearing impaired due to a field mishap is tragic but it's been seven fucking years and he's still blaming Oliver. Why!?! Was Brandon an unconscious, unknowing participant? No! Brandon was a trained MIA agent on a field mission and working in close proximity of sonic charges (whatever the f*ck they are). He knew the risks and accepted them, like every other field agent. Yet, he refuses to accept that what happened was an accident; he refuses to take responsibility for his actions and instead seeks to lay blame on Oliver. Give me a break! Following the accident, Brandon punished Oliver in the cruelest way by taking off without a word. He refused to talk to Oliver and rejected his tearful apologies. What. An. Ass. Then, seven years later Brandon (Mr. High and Mighty) returns as Director of R&D. Sadly, he's still trying to lay blame where it doesn't belong. Brandon is the epitome of an egotistical, selfish, prick. Frankly, I do not find him heroic in the least.

But okay, I'll roll with it because he'll obviously see the error of his ways ... right? Wrong! Oliver finally realizes what a prick his lover is and tells him off (90% of the way through ... but hey, better late than never, I say)! Yay!!! Oh happy day!!! But my reprieve was short lived because about 2 minutes later, Oliver was begging Brandon's forgiveness and telling him he loved him. Uh, no that wasn't a typo: Oliver. Was. Begging. Brandon. W.T.F.!?! That was it for me. I couldn't take it. I almost DNF'ed this book at 93% I was so pissed. Brandon NEVER redeemed himself in this book; he NEVER once apologized to Oliver for being a cold-hearted bitch. Therefore, Oliver's undying love and devotion ultimately irked me because it rendered him a fool. Waaaaah! It was a bust all the way around. (Hence, why I'm especially pissy.)

Couple side notes:
1. Ick factor: The freaking dirty elevator was a recurring theme that frankly grossed me out. I mean, come on ... Brandon getting down on his knees to blow Oliver then spurting his spunk onto a ratty carpet already riddled with old cum stains? How is that appealing? That is so not smexy.

2. I don't like having to research acronyms. If an author is going to use an acronym it would be helpful to know what the heck it stands for. LSA? WTF??? Is an LSA (or Limited Symptom Attack ... thank you Wikipedia) such common knowledge that a one-time explanation would be superfluous and unnecessary? I don't think so.

Needless to say, I can't in good faith recommend this read. Others DNF'ed this one and I kinda wish I had done the same. I like K.C. Burn and the MCs she creates, despite this snafu, but I really hope the MIA back story is better developed if the series continues. As it stands, I don't know that I'm interested in reading on.

I've been thinking about this review for a couple of days, trying to decide what to say. I like Oliver and Brandon but I'm definitely not as enamored with this book as I was the first two in the series. There's something missing in Craving that wasn't in the first two. I think it's the sense of urgency associated with the otherworldly creatures they're tracking. I just didn't get the same feel of danger as before. For readers who've never experienced the series, no back-story is provided to get them familiar with the MIA world, and aside from one creature who attacked Oliver, I don't recall the guys coming across any others. It's all personal interaction and investigating...STUFF. I thought the true paranormal aspect of the story was lacking.

Yes, getting Brandon and Oliver back together is of primary importance but it's a PARANORMAL romance, so I expect a balance--at least 50/50, and the romance definitely overshadowed the investigative portion of the story. And another thing. It's a pet peeve. When a character's supposed to be in dangerous situation where lives are at stake, having sex and not paying attention to what's going on around them is a really bad plot idea.

Don't get me wrong. There are some twists and turns I enjoyed and the ending has a nice action filled scene that worked very nicely. It's great having Carmichael back as a secondary character--and I can't forget adding Goodson, another interesting guy who I expect to see again in the future. Lastly, despite my issues, I didn't dislike the story. It's just different from the others and wasn't what I was expecting. Was I disappointed? Yes. Will I read the next one? Yes again.

What I liked from this book was the opportunity to visit characters from previous books; also, the sex scene was kind of hot. I like sex in semi-public places. However, this book is still my least favorite from this series.

Brandon confused me and I did not find him endearing like the characters from previous books. His motivation was sketchy and the way he acted was childish and illogical. He knew that there was someone deliberately sabotaging field agents' equipment, but he did nothing concrete to find out the culprit. There was no urgency in his actions; he just checked some documents and then left everything to be with Oliver (under guise of testing a new equipment). It's a big problem, lives were at stake, but he did not seem to be very motivated to do anything serious.

His behavior was unprofessional and he did not seem to learn from his past mistakes (sex while on the clock, hello? did you forget there's a monster hiding somewhere near?). His motivation of hiding his hearing condition was also unclear. If it was pride, what for? it was also dangerous for people who were at the field with him. He just did not show a maturity and clear thinking one expected from a Director.

Also, why did Oliver need to hide that he was bitten from his partners? Oliver was a by-the-book agent, and it was mandatory for agent to report such thing. Not doing it was a violation of rules. It doesn't make sense.

Everything was bland, including the main characters and villains. It's too bad since the plot looks promising.

I really am conflicted. It was great getting to know senior Agent Oliver Cardoso and why fellow agents saw hints of loneliness but the storyline dragged in a couple of places. Seeing that former Detective Goodson is now a MIA agent is going to take some getting used to. It's going to take a lot for the author to redeem him into a decent person.

There were several convergent story lines here, Oliver confronted by and forced to work with his ex lover Brandon Ellison, them both working through the reasons of their break-up, Brandon still trying to hide and not deal with his injury, a portal with unknown Uhmbria, and hints of sabotage at MIA R& D and Oliver training Goodson as a new agent.

For me, it seemed as if the author couldn't decide which storyline to follow and threw in sex scenes when she couldn't think of anything else. Don't get me wrong, Oliver and Brandon were sizzling but the scenes detracted from the other story lines.

So, while I did as always enjoy KC Burns story I'm conflicted on rating it. But, I will continue with the series!

I wasn't really expecting to like this one because of the low reviews and DNFs but I found it to be as enjoyable as the first two in the series. If anything I found the first and second book to have more eye rolling moments and unbelieveability that they didn't know that Frazer had a twin and after supposedly checking out Adam that they didn't know about his parents or that Adam had college degrees. I'd definitely read the next book in the series.

Oh, god. This thing's like America's Next Top Model in guy form framed in some kind of super-duper-top-secret-zomg-smorgasbord.

The thing was an awk Supernatural flashback moment.

The gaffes on cannibalism, I feel, are really awkward Hannibal Lector fodder, especially now.

You know, I actually kind of quite liked it, in a zany sort of way. It's complete insanity and lots of chest-thumping and shit, but it was fun in a this-can't-be-serious sort of way.

Definitely my favorite of the MIA Case Files books. Have been worried about Oliver from the beginning, and have often wondered what his sad little smiles and knowing looks were about. There were some absolutely hysterical LOL moments in Craving. A couple of scenes w/all 4 agents in the sh*tty, shoddy apartment were great. And it is always nice when everyone gets a HEA. Also noticed this left a possibility for another book--w/Luis and Robert. Don't know if that will happen or not.

In book 3 everyone is still running around with semi-permanent erections, but instead of insta-lust we have pining for one's ex, which is, I suppose, more reasonable. Nevertleless, it's still a pleasurable, engaging read that left me hoping that book 4 is in the making, especially if it'll tell us more about the nature of portals and monsters our brave protagonists fight.
