Okay so by now you've figured it out. I cook. I knit. I read most anything in Oprah's Book Club. I'm gay. Wow. I just bring it up because some really popular knitting gal came to Portland a couple of months ago and did a reading at Powels (can you imagine a book about knitting, patterns and such, funny little antidotes and what ever). Anyway, she was trying to dispel the belief that men who knit are gay. Well, some man stood up in the back of the room and said "aren't we."

I know knitting was invented by men. I'm sure there are men that knit who aren't gay. But when I go to my knitting store I get tired of women coming up to me congratulating me on how masculine I am because I knit. Oh buuurrrrother! I don't even knit that much anymore because I'm tired of making things I have no use for. It's an expensive hobby.

I bought this book for the pattern of a bag on page 12. I made it for a friend that was having a baby. Now I'm thinking of making it for another friend that's having a baby. Please tell me how practical is a felted wool bag for a women with a baby? It is washable...

BOTTOM LINE: Nice little book with some basic patterns in peculiar yarns and/or colorations. Not much here was my cuppa, but the patterns were well-done and this might be a good basic book to keep in your library if they appeal at all to you.

Some really basic patterns that every knitter could use: moss stitch scarf, a ribbed peacap, some other basic hats, and a couple of plain-jane sweaters that could become your basic go-to patterns, with lots of room for improvisation. Sizings are fairly good, with most of the patterns up to 48" and a few others a bit larger, yarn and needle information is clearly presented, indeed the writeups of the patterns are very clear and understandable, a big plus. And there are, as in many "basic knitting" books, rather nice explanations of the techniques needed to make the projects. I'd like to have rated this a bit higher, but the only pattern that really appealed to me was the ribbed peacap, and I can find many other basic designs for that at numerous places on the web, especially ravelry dot com, so this book isn't much use for me, thus the "middle" rating.

18 patterns, and I didn't love all of them but there are a few good ones to be had - zippered hoodie, a funky tasseled hat, a basic-style coat, and a rollover pullover that is very unisex. Overall, not a bad knitting book.

Love the two-tassel hat. Other than that, didn't really find anything I wanted to make.

It's one of the first books I had as a beginner knitter. I really liked it back then, but I don't refer to it much anymore.

Clear explanations on knitting facts and good, basic pattens. A nice reference to have on hand.
