About the author

Sibte Hasan was born on 31 July 1912 in Ambari Azamgarh Uttar Pradesh, India.He graduated from Aligarh Muslim University. For higher studies he went to Columbia University, USA. In 1942, Sibte Hasan joined the Communist Party of India. After partition of India, he migrated to Pakistan. He also served as editors of noted journals including; Naya Adab and Lail-o-Nehar. He died of a heart attack on 20 April 1986 in New Delhi while returning from a conference in India. He was buried in Karachi

سبط حسن کی شہرۂ آفاق کتاب ماضی کے مزار ایک اہم تاریخی دستاویز ہے جو اپنے اندر صدیوں کے علوم سموئے ہوئے ہے۔ اس کتاب میں سبط حسن نے مختلف تہذیبوں کا مختصر تعارف پیش کیا جس میں ان کے رسوم و رواج، تہذیب و تمدن اور مذہبی عقائد کے ساتھ ساتھ ان کے معاشی حالات اور قانون کے نظام کو بھی پیش کیا ہے لیکن سب سے زیادہ جن تہذیبوں پہ بات کی گئی ہے وہ بابلی ، سومیری عکادی اور مصری تہذیبیں ہیں۔
سبط حسن نے اپنے گہرے مطالعے کے باعث کچھ ایسے سوالات ابھارے ہیں جو ہر ذی فہم کو تشویش میں مبتلا کر دیتے ہیں اور ان سوالات کا تعلق زیادہ تر مذہبی عقائد سے ہے۔
کائنات کی تخلیق کے نظریات مختلف اقوام میں مختلف ہیں لیکن ان میں بھی کافی مماثلت پائی جاتی ہے اور اسی طرح طوفان نوح کا قصہ جو نہ صرف یہودیوں ، عیسائیوں اور مسلمانوں میں تسلیم کیا جاتا ہے اور مذہبی صحیفے اس کی تصدیق کرتے ہیں اس کے بارے میں بھی گلگامش کی داستان میں بتایا گیا ہے لیکن وہاں کرداروں کے نام اور اس سیلاب کے محرکات مختلف ہیں لیکن جانوروں کے جوڑے کشتی پہ سوار کرنا اور طوفان تھم جانے کے بعد خشکی کو تلاش کرنے کے لیے کوے ، فاختہ اور کبوتر کو بھیجنا وغیرہ وہ عناصر ہیں جو ایک جیسے ہیں البتہ سبط حسن نے شاید یونانی اساطیر کا گہرائی سے مطالعہ نہیں کیا کیوں کہ وہاں بھی ہمیں اسی طرح کے ایک طوفان کی کہانی پڑھنے کو ملتی ہے بہ صورت دیگر ان جیسا عظیم مصنف اس واقعے یا قصے کو نظر انداز کر دے ممکن نہیں ہے۔
کتاب کو پڑھنے کی ایک اور وجہ سبط حسن کا کہانی سنانے کا انداز ہے جو ہمیں کسی موڑ پر بھی بوریت محسوس نہیں ہونے دیتا۔۔۔۔

یہ کتاب اپنے عنوان سے مقامی معاشرت میں لایعنی اور ماضی کے فرسودہ نظریات کا پوسٹ مارٹم معلوم ہوتی ہے مگر کہانی بالکل الگ ہے۔
سبطِ حسن نے اس کتاب ماضی کی کئی تہذیبوں کا احاطہ کرنے کی کوشش کی مگر ایک کتاب میں اس کا احاطہ ممکن نہیں۔
تاریخ میں تمدن کے کسی بھی نظریے کی تالیف میں الہامی کتب کے حوالے براہ راست تعقل کی نفی کردیتے ہیں. میرا مشورہ ہے کہ تاریخ کے نوآموز قارئین ہراری کی کتب سے بہتر استفادہ کرسکتے ہیں۔
