Out of the cage: Sometimes a detour on the road of life is actually the right direction.
Valiant Vee Cotter lives in the middle of Nowhere, Idaho. His life consists of three things, hanging with his best friend Brice, working at a truck stop at the edge of town, and getting persecuted by the local homophobes. All that changes when a sexy trucker, Kyle, takes an interest in him, convincing him to start a long distance relationship, and Vee finds himself falling hard and fast.
Kyle Rainier’s life is taking a detour, literally. When his standard run from Denver to Boise and back has him making an unscheduled stop in a little town on the border of the Idaho National Forest, Kyle’s mate runs right into him. Using the truck stop’s shower room, Kyle seduces Vee and begins the bonding process. The next day, on his return trip to Denver, Kyle spends the night getting to know the human.
It’s not until Kyle is back home in Stone Ridge that he finds out he has a big problem. The local Idaho wolf pack kidnaps his mate and they’re holding Vee hostage. Can Kyle rescue his mate and convince him not all shifters are bad?
This series is good or my insta-mate-mine overcome danger -we are family-fix that I need. They all sort of follow the same pattern, but I actually like that about this series, you pretty much know what you will get. I liked Vee, he was pretty cool and Kyle is of course the perfect mate! :) This book introduced a few new characters I'm sure we will see in future books..
Ok so this book was wonderful. I loved Kyle and Vee. Loved the books story and the little bits that seem to be adding to the overall series, whereas usually this author tends to hit you with a hammer. I was engaged in the books plot rather than simply the pairing or it's role in the series. Congrats to Charlie, she really hit it outta the park with this one.
reread - While each of these stories is an interesting short story or novella, each in their own little series, they become much more if they are read in the suggested reading order by Charlie Richards as a whole. https://charlie-richards.com/reading-... While they are still not a 5/5, at least they become a bit more than okay and are much more interesting as characters mesh across and around individual series. Individually they are a 3/5 so that is where I mark them.
Accidentally found his in another Alphas territory ; had problems with said Alpha because he doesn't like gay shifters. Separated the mates did everything to keep them apart.
Met his mate on a detour. But was in another packs territory. His mate was kidnapped by other pack and had to be rescued now is time for the council to get involved
Now this was quite the exciting edition to the series! Kyle is briefly introduced in the previous book, but now he's the hero of this story. Kyle is a wolf of the Stone Ridge pack and he's an over the road trucker. As fate would have it (and she does), his truck is detoured a different route than the main interstate so he is forced to fuel up at a small truck stop on the edge of a nowhere town in Idaho. It is in the mini-mart that he scents his mate.
Vee is a resident of the hick town and he along with his friend Bryce are bullied and ostracized because they're gay. Life seems lonely and bleak for him as a gas station clerk until in walks a big handsome manly man who excites his interest and- miracle of all- he excites the trucker's interest.
The two men have a fling in the private shower room. Kyle is so caught up in the moment that he begins the mate bond with the bite, but restrains himself from finishing until they get to know each other and he can explain about shifters and the mating without driving his mate away. Vee is convinced that it is just the once, but is pleasantly surprised when Kyle wishes to continue it all with a distant relationship. Vee agrees and things get started.
No sooner does Kyle get home and start the relationship with a phone date than he discovers his error. He has trespassed on another pack's land and must petition the alpha to continue seeing his mate. As soon as he learns this, he learns that the alpha has taken his mate and Bryce. Kyle must now perform an act of restitution which he soon discovers is designed for him to fail whether he succeeds or not. But all is not lost because Kyle is not alone with his pack behind him. The plotting Jared outfits them and sends along his assistant Raul to act as his liaison and they are accompanied by the newest enforcer Manon to act as the logistics member of the team. Kyle knows that if he fails he will be band from entering the other pack's territory and will lose access to his kidnapped mate and if he wins, Vee will see him in his wolf form and look on him as a monster, but he still hopes against hope even as he accepts the alpha's task challenge.
The plot was exciting as Kyle faces the challenge, stages a daring rescue and goes up against bigotry. There are also broad hints as to the possibility of a new mated pair which sounds intriguing. I just loved the strong plot line on this one that was equal parts adventure and passion.
Valiant Vee Cotter and his best friend, Brice worked in a very small town's Truck Stop. A quick toothy hookup leads to a lot more than the Human Vee imagined. Just passing through the truck stop Kyle could not believe Fate's tricks. He almost hadn't stopped there. Kyle made sure that he memorized Vee's phone number. Brice had told Vee he was getting his hopes up for nothing. Vee at least had dinner and sex the night, but now he sat very lonely by the phone past the time Kyle promised to call. Fighting tears he finally went to bed - sleepless until the phone rang...sadly he answered to speak with his best friend, but was shocked to find his tardy trucker on the phone. Yea!!
The truck stop was in Idaho. Since it was out of his pack's territory Kyle finally caught up with his Beta after a few days later and explained his situation only to learn some disturbing news. A not so friendly pack claimed a large swatch of that territory. And Kyle wouldn't be able to return there until Declan's return from a much needed two week vacation. Alpha Andy of the Mayfield pack with his mean bullying homophobic pack members took great delight in terrorizing Vee & Brice and that was before they realized neither Human was familiar with the existence of Wolf shifters. The Mayfield pack made Vee and Brice believe the worse about Wolves & that Kyle was just like them.
Declan finally spoke with the Mayfield Alpha and disavowed the erroneous assumption that Kyle was a rogue Wolf. But he hadn't released Kyle's mate or friend. Demanding Penance! In Declan's absence Jared would have gladly accompanied Kyle, but Carson needed to stay behind and he wanted his mate with him. Jared suggested his best friend, Raul, the third Enforcer, Manon to go with Kyle.
Dirty shenanigans abound within the Mayfield pack territory. But there are more questions than answers. Why did the Mayfield pack continue to illegally hold the Humans? Why did one of those pack members try to help with the Humans & Stone Ridge shifters? Why did Vee run from his mate? Why was one of the Stone Ridge members forced to shoot Brice, Vee's friend? Would the Elephant shifter, Dr Gordon Digby be able to help the Human?
2.5-3 stars. An okay m/m shifter romance novella. Full disclosure—I just dove in to this book; I haven’t read the earlier ones. One bonus is that I didn’t feel super penalized for that. The author did a good job of making this story overall stand-alone (although as a new reader, I may not get the depth and understanding as a reader more familiar with the series.) It helps if you’re also familiar with shifter tropes. If you haven’t read anything about werewolves and shifters, then you probably should start at the beginning.
At about 100 pages, it’s a pretty short, fast read—-the story focuses on Kyle, a wolf shifter who is a trucker from the Stone Ridge pack in Colorado, who makes a stop in Idaho and comes across Vee, a human (and his fated mate.) Vee is very interested in Kyle, but finds out from the wrong people what Kyle really is, and trouble builds from there as Kyle has to both save Vee and prove that this whole crazy shifter thing isn’t as scary as Vee might think.
Why it’s just an okay read is mostly because it’s pretty short, and the author crammed in the main story with the MCs, side characters from past stories, and also characters that are strongly hinted at as MCs for future books. All that in a small amount of space, especially all the set-up for future couples in follow-up books meant that there wasn’t enough for me to really hold on to with this book’s main couple. I kind of wish there had been more depth and development for Kyle and Vee, as opposed to feeling Kyle’s side-trip to Idaho was mostly just set-up for other books.
If you’re fully invested in this series, this short side-trip might not bother you, but for me, it was an indicator that these longer series that focuses on many couples may not be my bag. I think my preference is for fewer (or one) couple and more development and relationship focus on them.
Cute. I liked it. Longer really does work better for this author.
Sure, the copy-editing remained somewhat off, but sadly that’s a given these days.
This still wasn’t a particularly deep story or out of the ordinary for this series, but yeah. I enjoyed myself. Jared especially has become such a delight since he discovered his semi-humane side in his own book. XD He’s still evil but so amusing and lovable, too.
I did not care so much for the usual surrogacy issue. Some authors treat it like just one of those things that can easily be arranged and provide whichever outcome has been wished for, without regard for the woman providing the service. Also, it’s common that each part of the couple wants a kid in the image of their partner, but if it’s a mating between a human and a shifter, wouldn’t that mean having both human and shifter kids? And wouldn’t that mean you’d have to watch the human ones age and die on you? Seems to me the author has not thought this one through. Or, of course, it’s merely the characters who haven’t considered the full ramifications and will receive a cruel turn later on. Which really does not fit with the author’s profile, so yeah, I’ll go with lack of foresight on her part instead.
Also, in another instance of irony, another future couple met and got me interested and, nope, they’re not the protagonists of the next few books either. *shakes fist* Why must you tease me so?
What a hokey plot - the penance/ransom was stupid, even for a popcorn shifters series. Kyle was extremely insensitive/careless to partially mate Vee without his knowledge or permission, without disclosing shifters and the mating bond, and then to leave him unprotected to get kidnapped and ransomed.
There were too many other characters involved in their relationship - taking care of Vee and explaining shifter stuff to him, and even comforting Kyle. Kyle didn't seem to have a strong mate pull towards Vee - emotionally and physically - he did not take ownership of Kyle as his mate plus he was constantly leaving to make truck runs. Vee, on the other hand, was more emotionally attached to Kyle.
Book was too short - there was no time given for Kyle and Vee to develop their relationship. Not enough time for Kyle to redeem himself.
This series has definitely run it's course. The first books are the best.
I started this book really excited about it. Then I don't know what. Whether it be me and the real world kicking in or the begining of the book wasn't very good I don't know, BUT i had issues getting into this book. Once I finaly sat down to read it though and got into the story I fell in love with the Characters and the story. The "Valiant" Journy to save his mate from a homophobic wolf pack was beautiful. I did have some issue with their relationship and his acceptence or his new lover being a wolf but seeing as how short the book is i can understand. I would recomend it for a quick read.
I liked Kyle and Val, but I wanted more. This one seemed rushed to me and there were a number of editing and proof reading misses that distracted me! I always like it when Jared is in the story, but I really want to know what's going to happen for Manon and Raul and Brice and most importantly, what will become of Sean since he's in a pack of jerks!
We need to find out about Brice's night out with Carson and Jared and about Brice's talk with the Doc! Too many loose ends in this one.
Much like Stormy Glenn, Charlie Richards infuses her stories with just enough intrigue and endearing romance to make it possible for to me overlook bad writing. Not great, but a pleasant way to pass the time if you're in the mood for some sappy m/m shifter fun. Be warned that Richards sucks at dirty talk. The sex scenes can be a little awkward at times.
This was a quick read and I feel like it might have benefited from being a little longer but it was a lovely story. By now I feel like I know what to expect from this series so there wasn't any "new" ground broken here but I liked the characters and the love story between Kyle and Vee. I also really, really love Jared :)
I really like reading her books. After reading the book I think about the next 2 or 3 people who will be in future books. This is a good thing because that means there is always another book to read.
First read 12-20-13 Vee and Kyle. I enjoyed this. I thought Kyle was kind of a dick in the beginning for some reason. But, he more than made up for it.
I adored Vee and really enjoyed Kyle and Vee's interaction. Vee is a strong guy and Kyle so dedicated. I just really loved this one from beginning to end!
