Wayne County Wolves #2

Run, Alger! Run

Rate this book
They say survival of the fittest applies to the animal world. That saying couldn't be truer in the shifter world. After centuries of war and infighting, most of the weaker species have been murdered to the point of extinction. So when Wolf shifter Nico stumbles across a Rabbit shifter, he is both shocked and intrigued. That is, until the Rabbit manages to escape and disappear. Then Nico finds himself angry when his skills as a soldier are called into question.

The only reason why Alger has survived so long is because of his ability to hide away from all things shifter and to blend in the human population. He ruins all that when, in a moment of weakness, he exposes himself to a Wolf of all things.

Even though Alger knows he should run as far away as he can, he finds himself drawn to Nico. Which is the worst mistake Alger can make. Not only does he have himself to protect, but also his small group of shifters, who-like Alger-are the last of their kind.

When Alger finds himself hunted by the dreaded Snake shifters, he knows his only hope is Nico. But can the pair put aside their inner animal instincts long enough to work together? Or will Nico eat Alger alive in more ways than one?

My Stephani Hecht addiction needed a fix!
This is typical of her shifter books of late, quick short and not terribly great, but an easy read.
Alger is a rabbit shifter living in an eclectic group of shifters! ( dove, ferret and a beagle...lol)
He runs into Nico at a fair and well..as they say the rest is history.
But, I am getting really annoyed with the use of 'brat' in stories for the younger or smaller man/shifter.
Just because they give a little lip doesn't mean they are brats, obviously they can't intimidate with size so they have to use what they have.
The constant use of brat and thinking about spanking him like a wayward child just annoys me!

This series doesn't make much sense. I looked into the next few books in the series and I don't even know who the characters are. in this book they set up a couple future pairings but then in the following books none of those characters are used. Odd. They keep mentioning ppl I had no idea who they were and I read the first book before going on to this one so it was all around odd.

I love Stephani Hecht, don't get me wrong, she is one of my favorite authors. However, this book, like many of her books recently, lack the depth we used to see in her writing. It's not just length, it's the emotion and pull I get from reading her characters. Her earlier books were much longer, probably by 50 pages or so. Now we're lucky to get 60 pages and all the details and emotions and little tidbits that her older books used to contain are lacking. This was a good book, I admit it, but it could have been a five. I think and this is just my opinion, but perhaps she needs to slow down and add more to the books she's currently writing. As a reader I prefer quality over quantity.

I love Stephani Hecht, I just got into her hockey series so this review is in no way reflective of all her works... but I just can't seem to gel with the Wayne County Wolves.

This review is for all of the Lost Shifters, Wayne County Wolves, and Assassin's Loyalty books since they are all interconnected and I read them back-to-back pretty much nonstop over a 10 day period. If I have anything to say about a particular book I'll add it under this bulk review. First, I'd like to mention these are more like novellas than books but they have the same underlying theme and pretty much continue where the last left off but with a different couple.

Everything starts out with the Lost Shifters. To summarize there was a war between the feline shifters and the raven shifters. 20 years or so before the first book there was an all out slaughter in which hundreds of feline homes were attacked and burned down all of the occupants believed to be killed. Turns out that the babies and toddlers that were assumed lost were not. They were hidden within the human foster care system for the most part. I won't say how because that'd be a big spoiler. In addition to foster care some kids were sold into slavery and that's where the whole assassin thing comes in. A couple of the main characters marry into the wolf pack so that's where those books come in as well.

Pros: Since the books are so short there are no long drawn out boring details or general angst. There's usually only one sex scene although it's normally long as hell. Which makes the fact some people shelved these as erotica confusing. I liked the world building and even though there were times I think a little more info might have been nice it never detracted from the story or left me confused. Most of the relationships were a sort of love at first sight thing. Or maybe lust or obsession? Despite this the shifters all seem adamant that's not a thing that happens. There wasn't one character I didn't like. My favorite character was Shane and he must have been the author's as well since he got a few extra books and a side series Shane's Chronicles. There's no big end battle or anything but the last book Baily's 9th Life does pretty much tie things up nicely. I think if I'd been reading the series when they were released I'd be a bit miffed because that book didn't come out until a few years later if you weren't reading the assassins books. Also, these books all have some really funny moments and/or dialog.

Cons: The last several books didn't appear to have been edited at all. If if wasn't for the fact that I was so invested in the overall story arc I would have quit reading them. Things like sent instead of scent and too instead of to they instead of them and random wrong words completely. There were also a couple of times that things were said/thought almost verbatim in different parts of a book as if the author forgot she'd already put that info in there already. At the start of the series, they state that all feline shifters are bisexual but at some point the author must have forgotten that detail because suddenly there are gay shifters and homophobia and all this hate. Which brings me to my next con, the themes of the different books started to repeat. Suddenly all these shifters had been thrown out of their previous pack or coalition or human home for being gay. And throughout this huge series of books there was only one straight couple. Like not even a straight friend or whatever. Even the females were all lesbians. It was just kinda unrealistic especially with the whole gay hate thing going on. Usually there's at least a few couples or friends or something on the periphery in gay romances especially in a world this huge. Which brings me to my final con, I had a hard time remembering who was who and what there story was after awhile especially if they weren't mentioned much in previous books. I wish there had been some sort of glossary to review.

Despite the cons, I would still recommend these books. All-in-all I really enjoyed them and was dreading the end although the editing in the last few books really had me also looking forward to the end if I'm being honest.

Believe it or not, I only discovered Ms. Hecht’s books a little over a year ago and she’s quickly turned into a must read author for me. I like her books because I love the humorous and sexy side of her characters, and she has the ability to give me an hour or two of wonderful escapism from my everyday ho-hum life. I find myself reaching for her books when I’m in the mood for something sexy, flirty and fun and she never fails at delivering that in each of her stories.

Alger is a rabbit shifter who lives in constant fear of losing his life. Since his species is not as aggressive as others, most of the rabbit shifters have either become extinct or must stay in seclusion and hide away for their lives. Alger lives with some other smaller and more helpless shifters, and although they live a hand and mouth existence, they are all very protective of each other. Unable to resist checking out the farm animals at the fair, Alger takes a huge risk and goes there unprotected. As he’s admiring the rabbits there, all of his senses go crazy when he runs into what he thinks a dangerous wolf shifter there.

Nico can’t believe that he’s run into a rabbit shifter. He thought they were extinct, and to make matters even more confusing, the little sexy shifter is driving his mating instincts crazy. But even as he tries to help the rabbit shifter, the poor man is scared and manages to escape his grasp. Now Nico must do what he can to find his mate, save him and convince him that they truly are meant to be together.

I loved this book! I thought both Nico and the adorable Alger were really fun and interesting characters and were definitely made for each other. I loved that the chemistry they had between them was very strong, and I appreciated how much Nico’s pack really strove to take Alger and his friends under their wing. As a reader, I appreciated the camaraderie between all the characters, and how each character really seems to bring something special to the story. I’m definitely anxious to read the next book in the series and hope it will be out soon!

Run, Alger! Run is the second book in the Wayne County Wolves series. It’s a spinoff of Ms. Hecht’s Lost Shifters series and I think this new series is starting off with a bang. Although Run, Alger! Run could easily be read as a stand-alone book in the series, I highly recommend reading this series in book order. This way you can really understand the dynamics of the pack and enjoy the other characters in the books. Recommended!

This was a serious disappointment. I'd give this a 1 star but I usually like this author and can't make myself do it. I have been a fan of Stephani Hecht since the first book of hers I read. This story had none of the depth, none of the emotion and I regret having to say the characters were so flat and lifeless that it was a struggle to get through the cookie cutter ending. There was none of her usual inventive story telling. There were no surprises and even the attempts at humor were tired and lifeless. I am thankful that this is not the first book of hers that I've read because I might not ever have gone father to read others. In fact it makes me not want to pick up the next because of the complete lack of any story line here. There's no real villain here, just a group of bad snake shifters. Truly far far far from her best.

The basic plot is pretty much the same as we’ve seen in several volumes of this series and its parent before, most recently book one of this. Same old, same old.
I still kind of like it because of the sheer amount of “new” people streaming by. Naturally they’re the same types as always, but I still enjoy getting to, uh, know new faces.

Still, some things once more seem iffy.
So Alger is only nineteen but he already has a bunch of tattoos – despite the fact that he’s been mostly on the run and out of cash since he was eighteen? Hm.
And what happened to Nico’s social networking addiction and teenage mannerisms (in private, anyway), that were introduced in the previous book?

Ah, whatever. Interestingly enough this might as well have been the first book of the series. It has that feel to it.

Decent shifter story, cute coupling between a wolf and rabbit, it was a quick read (perfect for my reading needs right now) but barely held my attention. We’re introduced to several more characters which are the build-up for more couplings down the road, and some of them do sound interesting. It was also enjoyable to read about the endangered species ‘pack’ so I will probably read those eventually, though insta love it always a stretch (but probably the only way to make these short stories work) so this will be a test of my endurance. Nice to see Nico get his own story, too bad Alger makes several less than brilliant mistakes, exposing themselves to the snake-shifters. This one was ok, but certain nothing stand out in the genre, very cookie cutter storyline.

Okay, so I love the Lost Shifters series, and I was happy to discover this spin-off. I just have one question: Isn't Cassie supposed to be pregnant/have a baby? Because in Fangs, Fur, and Snowballs in Lost Shifters, Chris reveals her pregnancy. So I was kinda wondering where in the overall timeline this series takes place...did I miss something?

But other than that, I like where this series is going and I can't wait for the next one!

I was dissapointed with this... I had hoped to get away from Cassie some and you keep shoving her at us. I doubt if this was real she would be the toughest shifter, maybe no guys would hurt her because they respect her and are afraid of her brothers and mate. AND maybe she could be a great fighter. BUT I hate how in every books she's mentioned it tells us she's the best fighter in the series when this is a MM book. 2.5 stars... More of the main characters, less Cassie please.

I like the idea of a spin off, giving us some new names and setting, but I just didn't connect to this story as much as I have with the first book and her earlier Shifter stories. It felt rushed and although I like the characters, just a bit flat. I really love Stephani Hecht, so I'll still be reading this series.

This was a really cute story, but I'm getting so sick of Cassie. Why does she have to be in every book? To top that you always have to be reminded that she's the toughest shifter on the planet and all the big bad boys are afraid of her. I'm soooo sick of hearing her threaten to kick someone's ass. Give me a break. Please stop shoving Cassie down our throats.

I enjoyed this. A macho wolf shifter and a mouthy rabbit shifter Lots of fur and fang, a punch up with goodies and baddies, a rescue, recovery, and then lurve.

And lots of intros to other characters who will hopefully be introduced in future books. A really great second book to what is shaping up to be a really good shifter series.

Maybe more of a 4.5, but that is only because Shane made a brief cameo. Am I the only one that would gladly read a daily Shane soap opera??? LOL
