My knowledge of philosophy is little to none, so while this was supposed to be an introduction to dialectical materialism, I found it to be a good introduction to philosophy in general because of the way Thalheimer traces the historical development of dialectical materialism. The writing was clear and easy to understand, free of jargon. It's written for the average working class person and the knowledge of the audience is always kept in mind.

the book feels like a solid introduction to marxism. it's fascinating how marx places dialectical materialism at the core of historical events.

Little bit of the weird thesis-antithesis-synthesis model (more Fichtean than Hegelian I’ve heard) in here, but overall very good for clarification. The bits of Indian and Chinese philosophy are useful too.
