Log scaler Karena Carlson lives off the grid in the Minnesota back woods with her son, Danny, and his mischievous pet moose calf, Mortimer. Logan Baxter spots her winning the log rolling competition at the timber show and is instantly smitten. Logan is single, social and fond of electricity, indoor plumbing and gas heat. Karena dislikes cities, crowds, and strangers. Can a stubborn 12 year old boy and a capricious moose calf addicted to exhaust fumes help love find a way?
A touching story about struggles to overcome. Then add a moose calf named Mortimer to the mix and you cannot help but fall in love with them all. Karena a single mom raising her son Danny alone in the woods and the last thing she expects to do was fall in love with Logan. Throw in Logan's niece and nephew twins and let the adventures begin. Well written perfectly paced story pulling you in from the start.
What a great imagination. This is the first time I've read a story with a Moose as a pet. Mortimer ate an amazing amount of food ...bread and oranges were two of his favorites. Of course Dani,
"Log scaler Karena Carlson lives off the grid in the Minnesota back woods with her son, Danny, and his mischievous pet moose calf, Mortimer. Karena dislikes cities, crowds, and strangers. Can a stubborn 12 year old boy and a capricious moose calf addicted to exhaust fumes help love find a way?" From this description, I expected to read more about the mishaps of living with a growing moose, about city-meets-country, and yes, of course a love story. The book concentrated more on the problems of living with a moose calf (yeah sure there are problems, but like I said, I expected a funny story), and of the problems of two lovers trying to find a compromise between their opposite characters and ways of living. All in all, once I got over the initial disappointment of this not being something funny, the story itself was quite nice and well told, although I think the end itself was maybe a bit rushed? The characters are well presented, but again, Karena's father might have deserved a bit of more depth, especially near the end when he went out of his (ususal) way to help. Maybe if the book had been longer, there would have been more time for more detailed descriptions, character development and connecting persons and actions. In summary, a nice book to read on a rainy afternoon :)
I loved how this story showed how opposites attract. Logan sees Karena at a logging festival where she is competing and feels like he must meet her. They meet and they are opposites he is a professor and she is a log scaler and lives in a rugged cabin with her son but they do get together and I loved how the story developed I loved Mort the Moose and her grumpy dad and how true love wins out. A definite must read
