He was a proponent of agricultural cooperation, but was skeptical with respect to the indiscriminate introduction of large-scale farms. Chayanov's skepticism was rooted in the idea that households, especially peasant households which practice subsistence farming, will tend to produce only the amount of food that they need to survive. He believed that the Soviet government would find it difficult to force these households to cooperate and produce a surplus. These views were sharply criticized by Stalin as "defence of the kulaks". However, Chayanov was ultimately shown to be right about the problems with Soviet agricultural planning.
In 1930 Chayanov was arrested in the "Case of the Labour Peasant Party" (Трудовая крестьянская партия), fabricated by the NKVD. The name of the party was taken from a science fiction book written by Chayanov in the 1920s. The process was intended to be a show trial, but it fell apart, due to the strong will of the defendants. Nevertheless on a secret trial in 1932 Chayanov was sentenced to 5 years in Kazakhstan labor camps. On October 3, 1937 Chayanov was arrested again, tried and shot the same day.
His wife was repressed as well and spent 18 years in labor camps. Chayanov was rehabilitated in 1987.
Chayanov's major works, Peasant Farm Organization (originally published in Russian in 1925) and On the Theory of Non-Capitalist Economic Systems were first translated into English in 1966. Chayanov's theory of the peasant household influenced economic anthropology. The substantivist Marshall Sahlins drew on Chayanov in his theory of the domestic mode of production, but later authors have argued that Chayanov's use of neo-classical economics supports a formalist position.
His book Puteshestvie moego brata Alekseia v stranu krest’ianskoi utopii [My brother Alexei's journey into the land of peasant utopia] (Moskva: Gosizdat, 1920) predicted a rapid transfer of power into peasant hands; its hero wakes up in 1984, "in a country where the village has conquered the city, where handicraft cooperatives have replaced industry." Like Evgeny Zamyatin's We, it contains theosophical elements.

Aleksej, il nostro protagonista, è a Venezia all'interno di una bottega di un antiquario, alla ricerca di qualcosa di particolare. Il tempo passa, le cianfrusaglie sono innumerevoli, ma di poco conto, poi ecco che scorge nell'oscurità un oggetto che davvero lo colpisce subito: uno specchio. Lo compra e se lo porta a Mosca, ma quello che ha comprato si rivelerà qualcosa di buono o meno oppure addirittura qualcosa di totalmente inspiegabile?
Cajanov, autore perlopiù sconosciuto in Italia, è un intellettuale russo studioso di economia agraria, vede nella vita contadina la vera rivoluzione. Per l'occasione scriverà il romanzo "Viaggio di mio fratello Aleksej nel paese dell'utopia contadina", per esporre, appunto, la sua personale rivoluzione futura. Opera che ha influenzato Zamjatin nella stesura di "Noi" ed ipoteticamente anche Orwell per "1984". Totale genio incompreso, verrà arrestato e condannato a morte per cospirazione dalle bande assassine staliniane.
Il tema del doppio raccontato con piglio onirico e poetico. Le sfumature, che trasudano dalle pagine di questo racconto, rendono l'atmosfera crepuscolare e molto intimista, l'interiorità è così sublimata da risultare estremamente tangibile ed inquietante!
Ottima scoperta, da recuperare.

Contrariamente a quanto di solito mi accade direi che questa volta l'introduzione è stata più interessante del racconto. Mi ha permesso infatti di scoprire un paio di libri che sono finiti immediatamente nell'elenco di quelli da leggere.
Per quanto riguarda il racconto: è una versione dell'idea che negli specchi esista un mondo speculare, negativo e pericoloso.

Letto per caso e apprezzato molto.
Un racconto in cui il tema del doppio viene declinato in modo abbastanza classico, ma non per questo meno affascinante. Il protagonista, Aleksei, infatti, si scambia con il suo riflesso nello specchio del titolo e per un periodo è rinchiuso al di là dello specchio mentre il suo riflesso se ne va in giro indisturbato a fare danni, ma poi lui riesce ad uscire e a rimettere le cose a posto.
Cupo, pieno di atmosfere asfittiche, e decadenti, è un racconto molto interessante e mi ha fatto venire voglia di approfondire questo autore russo poco conosciuto in Italia.

Некоторые речевые кунштюки хорошо исполнены.
Сюжеты мрачноваты и безысходны, переживание таинственного привлекает и захватывает.
Что ещё?
Ещё любопытно думать о том, каково было автору — ухать в это всю уходящую, отжившую натуру (с) из быта революционной России.
И как сочетать внутри экономиста и мистика?
А вот так.
Легко.

к вступительной статье мало что добавить - такой вот русский Гофман. всюду у него фатальные женщины, несчастливая любовь и страшные антропософы / иллюминаты. возможно у Чаянова таки пару идей Пелевин потырил (например, про зеркального человека). в целом - захватывающе и неглубоко.
