Sorry, I just couldn't finish this book. Not even made 30% of it. I LOVE Joyee Flynn, her books are amazing, and I'm not saying this one is not good. It's well written and probably has a great story. But tree shape-shifters... really?? 'O_õ
Ok, at first I was intrigued with the tree shifters idea, then I was totally sure I wasn't going to like it, in fact i almost dropped it, by the end I really liked it.
It was like merging normal situations like a new relationship and family acceptance, drug cartel with the fantasy world of shape-shifters, it was crazy but well managed and well blended, I liked how the drug cartel fight was managed, since there are a lot of writers who promises us a fight and it never actually happens, or there are other writers who's mc doesn't feel remorse, here it was well rounded.
As a warning to you all this story begins with mc having sex with non mc, but after that it's just mc/mc, BUT they stated they wouldn't have a monogamous relationship, so be warned.
I loved Bud, rarely a kid is written to my liking in a book, Bud was amazing, so full of innocence, life and curiosity, his scenes were some of the best.
The sex was ok, Branch was domineering, but he wasn't an asshole in a bdsm way, but I didn't skip those scenes and that says a lot given I skip most sex scenes in the books I read.
The world building is well done, I don't know if I will read the sequels it would depend about the monogamy mostly, Open relationships are a no-no for me, here they say they would have some kind of voyeur/open-relationship but it never happened so I was able to take the idea out of my brain.

This wasn't necessarily a bad book just definitely not my thing. Monogamous relationships would not be considered part of this story line even if there were no participating scenes done. Like I said, that was a big turn off right there for me. Plus, being unable to control when you shift and how long was also a turn off for shifter books for me. I've been happy with every book I've read so far of Flynn's except this so I'm good

I really wasn't sure about this book when I bought it, but Ms Flynn is an autobuy for me so I figured I would try it out. Thank goodness I did. This book was something new and exciting. The concept of the shifting trees and other animals was new to me and I actually found myself wanting more and more. With it being the first of the series there is a lot of backstory, but instead of it being boring as it can be in some books, I found myself sucked in fairly quickly. The characters are all interesting and the family dynamic is not something I expected, and was pleasantly surprised. I am looking forward to the next books. I have found myself in a rut lately and wanting something new and exciting to read and I am happy to say I found it. Thank you again for reminding me why I love to read. You always do come up with some interesting worlds for us to visit Ms Flynn. I highly recommend this book, the world and the people are captivating.
I struggled with how to rate this book. Honestly it isn't something I would have ever read had it not been for a challenge. Shifter trees and bats along with magic mushrooms and soil is just not something I would chose. However the story was very imaginative, very well written and flawlessly edited. If you want a light, unusual erotic story this is for you.
I had bought the second story in this series before reading the first. I'm going to read it to see if it gets better but if it doesn't then this is it for me and this series...I just couldn't get into it...
