Wilderness medicine expert and Backpacker magazine columnist Buck Tilton covers every step needed for the best hiking and backpacking experience. From gear to gourmet trail food, from good hiking technique to dressing the part, from using map & compass to nibbling wild plants, this visually organized resource has everything today's hiker wants and needs―including top quality color photos for inspiration.
The Knack! guide format of using photos to enhance the (very brief) written descriptions reminds me of the Teach Yourself Visually series. Tilton's tips and suggestions to become a better BPH (backpacker/hiker) were excellently complimented by Gorman's photography.
Overwhelmingly, the information was not new to me - but, I did welcome the refresher and feel a bit of motivation to get on the trails again (perhaps not backpacking, but at least back to hiking more regularly). Regardless, I would say that it's an excellent resource for those just starting out as well as intermediate BPH that want a handy resource to consult for basic information on just about every topic relevant to trailcraft.
Started this book 2 weeks earlier than date posted. Lots of pics and solid advice for backpacking. Not quite what I was looking for. I am looking for comprehensive guidebook for the AT. All in All good, quick read.
