When Summer Ends: A single mom beach romance

Rate this book
Giving in to him was like swimming with the undertow.
I was destined to get sucked under.
Single mom? Check. Trust issues? Double check.

When Reed, a sexy-as-sin surfer, becomes my beachside Coffee Cart’s competition, my life begins to unravel—starting with my faulty conviction that I’m immune to romantic desire.

The fight to keep my customers is on, right along with my ability to keep my eyes—and hands—off of Reed’s six-pack of abs.

This beach needs a dress code.

I’ll do whatever it takes to win the Kiki Beach Bash, despite my growing attraction to the competition.
If that isn’t bad enough, my son’s dad shows up unexpectedly at my work, demanding I give our relationship another chance.

Imagine my surprise when my shirtless, margarita-mixing rival steps in to throw a punch on my behalf.
Consequently, I find myself hopelessly hooked on Reed Waldon.
He has nothing to gain from staying in Swordfish Cove, least of all a single mom with baby-daddy drama.

When summer ends, I’ll have to decide if I will let Reed go or confess to him that I’m not so dead inside after all.

*this book was kindly sent to me by the author in exchange for an honest review. all opinions are my own.*

Okay, by now you all know how much I love MJ Hendrix’s books. So much so that even though MJ kindly sends me the e-arcs for review (and I’ll be forever grateful for this wonderful opportunity), I still want to get physical copies of all of her books just because I want to re-read them and admire their gorgeous covers.

When Summer Ends tells us the story of Alani, a single mom working her butt off to provide for herself and her son, Koa, and Reed, who’s spending the Summer with his grandfather and ends up crossing paths with our hot momma Alani, because guess what? Reed is her competition! Yup, while Alani is working at her Coffee cart, Reed sets up a Margarita truck right on the same beach as her and they’re both entering the end of the Summer competition that will make such a huge difference in Alani and Koa’s lifes if she wins. She’s pissed – as she should, since a few days before he had asked her a bunch of questions about her cart and now he’s trying to steal her customers – but both Alani and Reed also find each other so attractive.

This is honestly the perfect beach read!

I want to be BFFs with Alani. I admire her strength so much, she’s a badass and I love her. And Reed, oh my goodness, Reed is such a sweetheart. He’s so kind, so patient with her and respects her so much and I just want to hug them both. They quickly became one of my favorite book couples. Alani damn right deserved a good man!

This is definitely different from MJ Hendrix’s Good Ol’ Boys series, but sooo worth it! I promise you won’t regret reading it. If you love Summer Romance, Rivals with Benefits and Billionaire Romance and some Family / Baby Daddy Drama, I’m sure you will love When Summer Ends . Also, being an island girl myself (from the Azores), the fact that this book is set in an island with gorgeous sunsets and a gorgeous beach just made everything even more magical for me.

And to you, my dear MJ, thank you for another wonderful read.

idk,,,,it started out so good and promising but i was still cautiously optimistic, and then 50% into the story my interest just went poof

some grievances:

after reading this, i feel like i know nothing about the characters. like yeah i know the fmc and mmc’s struggles and (minor) trauma but other than that everything sorta felt…superficial?? (if that’s even the right word??)

also, the fmc’s best friend is literally introduced as her bestie and purely loved in platonic light and then in the next chapter he’s giving her flowers and saying ‘i think we should try’ huh??????????? what was the reason????? bc she’s so uncomfortable with it and when they do go on the shitty date, they don’t even really address how bad it was??? they kinda just went ‘well ok see you around’ and he fully disappears from the story……that just lowkey annoyed me

also fmc and mmc decide to do ‘rivals with benefits’ but do not have sex once during that VERY short lived arrangement……again i must ask, what was the point????

another thing that pissed me off in this single mom romance was the lack of fmc being a…idk…. A MOTHER i swear i barely saw that kid bc her aunt had him more than she did, SHE EVEN TOOK HIM TO COLORADO…..THEY LIVE IN HAWAII…….YOURE ALLOWING YOUR 2 YEAR OLD TO LEAVE YOU LIKE THAT???????

not to mention, the mmc and said child only met within the last 4 chapters, and those chapters were short

whatever it gets 3ish stars (not even)

If you are looking for the perfect beach romance, you NEED to pick up When Summer Ends by M.J. Hendrix.

First and foremost, it is set in Hawaii which is the PERFECT setting ever! I literally felt like I was there, on the beautiful beach with those breathtaking sunsets. The beachside coffee carts and margarita trucks sounded like a DREAM!!

This a single mom romance with a sprinkle of workplace rivals and the perfect amount of banter. Reed was a PERFECT book boyfriend and his relationship with Koa (Alani's son) was just so freaking sweet!

It was spicy and sweet and really just the perfect summer read!

POV: Dual
Spice: 🌶️ 🌶️ 🌶️

“They say the first coastal sunrise of summer can cure the blues of a long winter." Can a book smell like summer? If so, this one definitely does! I felt like I could smell the Hawaiian air on the beach while I sipped my favorite coffee from the sand. I'm not sure l've ever been particularly jealous of the fictional jobs characters have in a book, but Alani with her Coffee Cart and Reed with his margarita truck, both on the beach, had me feeling more than a little green.

I loved the entire premise of a competition between the two, turning Alani and Reed into enemies before they are lovers. Alani is a strong FMC who is a young, single mom, and she is instantly likable. It took me a little longer to warm up to Reed, but his love for Alani and her son help him to become the best version of himself and the perfect man to step up for them both.

This book is relatively light but does include some twisty family drama from both sides, including baby daddy drama that almost drove me to violence, although luckily I felt avenged by the end. One of the best parts about this book is it felt like it really came from the author's heart, so it's a summer read you won't want to miss!

MJ never disappoints! I got so excited when MJ posted this surprise release, I knew from the cover it was going to give off the best vibes!! I had been in the biggest book slump and this book was so easy and fun to read through! It was a different vibe from her Good Ol' Boys series, but no less addicting (side note if you haven't read her Good Ol' Boys series what are you doing?? Go read them ASAP!!)

Alani is a fierce single mom who has a coffee cart on the beach in Hawaii, and it has been doing really well in the past couple years. One week this one guy keeps coming up to her cart (who she has great chemistry with btw) and is interested in her business logistics. Imagine her surprise when one morning she looks over to the piece of beach she wants and sees a margarita cart...ugh and guess who is inside it....yeah same guy...same infuriatingly handsome guy...

That guy happens to be Reed. His fine ass is staying in Hawaii with his grandfather for the summer and decided to open a margarita cart next to Alanis for some competition...and maybe another more personal reason. I loved the development of Reed throughout the book, learning what he wants out of life and that he might have been living a life based on the environment he was raised in. I loved seeing him with Alani and her son Koa. All you single moms out there, you deserve a partner like Reed, someone who finds you sexy for being a mom and isn't afraid to show you just how much he likes it. Whew Reed calling Alani Mamas was chefs kiss.

Alani and Reed were genuinely good souls, they fit each other so nicely and filled missing pieces in each others lives. This book had all the good things, like angst, jealousy, banter galore, badass single mom, rivals with benefits, baby daddy drama, funny, sweet, you get the idea itll pull on all your emotions in the best fluffy sweet sexy way! Oh and Reeds friend Cal is a great side character!

When I was reading this book, I kept thinking I wish I was reading this on the beach. If your looking for a beach book then this is perfect. Beachy vibes and so easy and fun to get through!

ps. did I mention that Reed is rich?? yeah we stan a man who gives our girl $100 for a coffee. also another older gentleman who seems to have the same habit of giving Alani a good tip on his coffee....

this book is a perfect example of never settle for less than you deserve. Reed and Alani had my heart from the very beginning to the end. they were perfect for each other. their chemistry from the moment they met and throughout the entire book had me in a chokehold. and the cute banter had me giggling and kicking my feet.

Alani: a strong ass, single mom doing everything she can to provide for her son. she has the cutest little coffee kart on Kiki Beach. i loved reading about her life running her coffee cart. she would show up, watch the sunrise before she opens, working in her cute little bikinis and sundresses. living her best life, i wanna be her. and being able to see how good she balances working and being a single mom to her 2 year old son Koa was just perfect. Single mom trope always holds a special place in my heart because it reminds me of my momma. and how much of a badass she was raising my brother and i alone. she really did it all. watching Alani go from this broken person, who was scared to open her heart, to finally opening her heart up & being treated better then she ever had, made my heart so happy. she deserved all the happiness she got.

Reed: ooooooo he’s sexy🔥 i loved him from the beginning. he decided to open a margarita cart right next to Lanis coffee cart for a little competition. but when you find out why he’s doing this it will make you love him even more. i loved how he always puts the people he loved before himself. he wasn’t this selfish asshole, he truly had one of the best hearts. he was always there for Lani & was protective and i loved how her being a single mom didn’t effect the way he felt, in fact it made him fall harder. and the way he was with Koa…please my heart. it was perfect.

YOUR NEXT BEACH READ!

MJ kindly sent me an ebook arc of this book in exchange for my honest review.

I loved it! Just when I thought Big Shot was my favorite by MJ, here this one just rolls up next to it!

I just love “beach-read” books. They get me all in the summer feels. The fact that When Summer Ends is set in Hawaii just made it even better.

The story is told from a two person POV.
Spice: 🌶️🌶️ (two times where the deed is done and two or three times of almosts.) But lots of tension and everything was written well.

FMC is single mom, Alani. She was born and raised on the island and runs the Coffee Cart on Kiki Beach. She comes from a not so great childhood relying her aunt and sister for help with her son since his father is absent.

MMC is Reed. He is from NYC but is visiting his sick grandfather on the island for the summer.

One morning, opening up her cart, Alani meets Reed. She immediately finds him attractive but believes him to just be a vacationer and doesn’t plan to see him ever again. He comes back the next morning for another coffee and they talk about her business. Reed says its because he’s in business school and loves talking with entrepreneurs.

Alani is struggling to make it on her own and is hoping with the Kiki Beach Bash coming up at the end of summer, that this will be her year to win the grand prize and earn enough money to expand her business. However, one morning as she’s opening up her cart, a margarita truck pulls up close to her and has now become her competition. Who is running this truck? None other than handsome, Reed.

Enemies-to-Lovers
Single Mom Romance
Older girl/Younger Guy
Family/Ex Drama

The only reason for not giving five stars was for the use of “baby daddy” and “holy shiza” being used too much for my taste. Other than that, the story was great!

Reed is visiting his grandpa for the summer before he goes back to NY for school. He’s there to have fun but also to proposition his grandpa for access for funds for his mom. His grandpa cut her off and since she has no interest in working and has a spending problem, Reed offers his summer to make a profit business of 30% in exchange for her to access her trust fund.

Alani has had a rough life. She’s a single mom running a profitable Coffee mobile business on the beach. Her dad is an alcoholic, her mom has done something so hurtful that Alani cut her out of her life and her baby daddy cheated on her while she was undergoing a C-section. She only trusts her sister, her aunt and her best friend from Kindergarten.

Alani meet Reed one early morning while he was stumbling on the beach. He gives her a $100 bill in exchange for a cup of coffee. She thought he was so handsome but carried on. The next day he shows up again and chats with her about her business. A few days later he shows up in a taco truck and parks next to her business. She’s so pissed because this business is the way she survives.

Reed and his best friend, Cal, sell margaritas & frozen spiked lemonades out of a taco truck Cal’s mom bought him to sleep in as a punishment the summer prior. 😂 Obviously the friction of two drink businesses on the beach is going to happen.

This story had a lot of layers to it. I loved the emotions you go through as a reader.

If you’re looking for the perfect beach romance for the quickly-approaching summer, look no further because HERE IT IS 🤩

There’s lots to like about this book, but what stuck out to me the most was the setting. It’s literally set in Hawaii — like how perfect?! The description of the beach and the island, the beachside coffee carts and margarita trucks, and the beautiful sunsets were everything 😍 It felt like I was right there in the story, and I kept wishing that was truly the case 🌴

Now for the romance: it was totally swoon-worthy 💛 To its core, this book is a single mom romance, which I loved because it’s one of my all-time favorite tropes 🫶 Add that to this book being rivals with benefits, secret billionaire, and having all the summer vibes you could ever want? I had no choice but to love this story 🤭 Reed was the dreamboat of a man that Alani deserved after all that she went through. Also, her son Koa was the absolute cutest, and the moments he had with Reed were even cuter 🥹 I loved seeing their little family develop their happily ever after 🤧

Overall, this book is the epitome of a good summer romance! ☀️ Alani & Reed’s love story is seriously the book to take with you to the beach — or to read to at least make you feel like you’re there 🌺 I’ve read MJ’s Good Ol’ Boys series, which I love, so I was excited to read this one from her; it was definitely different from her other series, but I’m happy to say that I still really enjoyed it nonetheless! I can’t wait to keep reading more from her 🥰

Alani is a single mom trying to make a life for herself and her toddler. She is the owner of a coffee cart that she parks at the beach in Hawaii and it is only increasing in profit over the last several years.
Reed is in business school in NYC and is spending the summer with his grandfather in hopes to strengthen his relationship with him but he isn’t going to hold his breath.
Alani is hoping to win the end of summer competition this year which will allow her to expand her cart. One morning when she looked up she sees a truck pulling in that is selling margaritas and she is pissed when she finds out the owner is the same guy that asked her question about the coffee cart and how successful she was she just knows they are going to take her customers from her. She also find him very sexy. Reed finds Alani unbelievably attractive and wants to know her better but she keeps giving him the cold shoulder. Eventually he wears her down and slowly she begins to warm up to him but she knows he is here only for the summer and doesn’t want to go through being heartbroken again.
MJ did it again. Another book of hers I couldn’t put down. I love how Reed treat Alani even when she tries to push him away.

Whenever Ms.Hendrix announces a new book I always look forward to more of her words! the synopsis for this one caught my eye immediately. I picked it up and got right into this story. I so enjoyed it!

Alani and Reed's journey captured my attention right from the get go! Alani is a single mom who runs the Coffee Cart on Kiki Beach and Reed arrives one day and orders french press. Little did these two know when they were brought into each other's lives they'd soon be going head to head. Will both their hearts win?

I really liked how I got right into Alani and Reed's story. I enjoyed their interactions and how they got under each other's skin. I admired how driven both Alani and Reed were and Alani's heart when it came to her son. I wasn't exactly sure how things would go at certain points and I really enjoyed that. Both Reed and Alani had me feeling many things!

From Kiki Beach to the characters, I so enjoyed this story!

With When Summer Ends, Ms.Hendrix has created such a good read that brought the feels! Be sure to check this one out this summer!

Honestly I'm not such a big fan of kids at all, but thr way Alani cares and loves Koa and how we get to experience how Reed falls not only for her buy for Koa also was such a wolsome thing.

I did felt it was a little obvious from the very first chapters the reason that made Alani finally break things off with her baby daddy which I absolutly despised the whole book to the point I can't even remember his name hahaha, but omg like wtf with him, and why did she put up with so much before leaving his ass? Probably because she thought it was the best for Koa but honestly so glad she did.

I loved Alani and how strong and brave she is, I really hope no mom has to go through what she went through, but I do wish we all find a Reed, the must unrealistically perfect men for us, I know there must be one for everyone out there, not exactly like him but someone how shakes our whole world with just a look or a touch.

I really enjoyed this book a lot, everytime MJ just delivers such a fun beautiful thing to read, can't wait for her next one.💜

Coffee Cart v Margarita Truck a Romance

🌻ARC Review🌻

When Summer Ends by MJ Hendrix

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I voluntarily read an advanced copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.

This was a book I was not expecting. One, I literally wasn’t expecting it. It just showed up on my Kindle one day as MJ was keeping it a secret from all of us. Two, this book was absolutely perfect.

Alani is a single mother living in Swordfish Cove making a living as a Coffee Cart owner when Reed opens a Margarita Truck in the prime spot down the beach.

This book was absolutely what I needed and I just loved how Reed is with Alani and Koa.

What to Expect:
•Single Mom
•Custody Issues
•Family Drama
•Food Truck Competition
•Sunsets

Alani & Reed
Single mom
Rivals to lovers
“Age gap” lol She’s 2 yrs older
🌶️🌶️

Hurray for epilogue 6 yrs after the ending.

The story was fine. I think there were too many side characters that didn’t necessarily add to the story. They just ended up being loose ends…like Alani’s father, her dying/dead aunt, etc.

The book blurb mentioned her ex wanting to get back together. It was misleading bc I thought it meant he was trying to win her back. Nope…he’s just a manipulative and selfish a**. He could’ve stayed gone and not been a part of the story at all.

Such a cute fun read!!!! Alani is a single mom who owns a coffee cart on the beach. In walks Reed who opens a margarita truck right across from Alani. Both will be competing for the beach bash prize. They become rivals to “rivals with benefits.” With Reed only being in town for the summer neither want things to get serious but can they fight their attraction for each other?

This book brought me out of my reading slump. I have fallen in love with these 2 characters. Myself being a single mom really hit home since when my ex left my son was the same age as Koa. I loved the character build up and how everyone played a part. I truly like the writing style and it keeps the interest of the reader.

Ummm to be quite honest I would not recommend this book. There wasn’t that much chemistry between the characters. Personally, I hate when characters go from hooking up once to being head over heels in love in the span of one chapter. It’s just not my forte. Anyways it’s 3:30 am and I need to be up at 6:30. Don’t drink two cups of coffee before bed ladies and gents!

3.5 stars! I really loved the chemistry and affection between Reed and Alani, and swooned every time he called her “mamas.” The mom drama on both sides was a bit confusing at times, but this was a really enjoyable slow burn with great characters and a wonderful HEA. *I received an ARC in exchange for my honest review.

Mj's novels consistently exceed my expectations, and "When Summer Ends" is a testament to her remarkable storytelling. The beach setting captivated me, and I appreciated the depth of the main character's development throughout the narrative. This book is essential for anyone who enjoys a compelling summer beach romance or the single mom romance trope.
