The successor to Petrides's classic Field Guide to Trees and Shrubs, this is probably the most beautifully illustrated and cleverly organized guide to trees ever published. 96-page color insert, illustrations and maps.
For a layman tree-lover, this book has been very helpful in getting to know the species in eastern/southern Minnesota. One can view plates of close-up leaf/branch/flower pictures, with simple keys, and then refer to the extended text in the subsequent section. This extended text includes useful and interesting information, including some natural history of and human relationships with the species. I found it very easy to identify the species and get to know them a bit.
I have used this book regularly for a few years for tree identification and as a reference book. A practical field guide for eastern trees. Often carry the book around including for outings which entail tree seed collection. The botanical illustrations were done by Janet Wehr who has been a resident of Connecticut for many years.
The East Coast is noted for its wonderful, old forests, including a plethora of species unfamiliar to us westerners! I take this excellent field guide along on any trips to the East. I especially find helpful the comparative table of informative included with each color plate.
