Social Studies Content for Elementary/Middle Teachers

This book contains an introduction to social studies content and a chapter each on history (including Europe, Asia, Africa, the Americas and the 20th century around the world), geography, economics, and civics. It is designed to give the teacher, who may not be well-grounded in the social studies, a comprehensive overview of important events, people, facts, and concepts. It is an excellent quick reference and contains substantial resource lists for both teachers and their students and a thorough index. This book is a valuable source of information for social studies teachers, particularly those at the elementary or middle school level, who may not have a strong content background. Since many elementary teachers have strong method, theory, and practice backgrounds but often limited social science backgrounds, they can rely on this book to put major events and concepts in context for them. In Florida, for example, third grade teachers are now responsible for Ancient Peoples, Ancient Empires, Medieval Life, and the Renaissance (where they used to teach "Community"), so this book can help them quickly orient themselves. It is a valuable resource for teachers and includes valuable resources for students (including lists of relevant story books) and further sources for teachers.

I read this to review social studies concepts for the Middle School Social Studies Praxis. It has a good basic overview of major concepts. I'm not sure how well it prepares me until I get my exam results. Will update review when I do.
