Introduces young readers to conditions and disabilities that may affect them, or their friends and family. I’m interested in science because it helps us to understand the world. I enjoy finding out about new things and then working out how to write about them in a way that is both clear (and accurate) but which also conveys my own excitement and interest. I particularly like writing books that are fun, and I have been lucky to have had so many chances to do so.
I was born in Yorkshire in England, but grew up in Stranraer, a small town in south-west Scotland. I graduated from Edinburgh University and then came down to London, where I have lived ever since. I enjoy reading novels, watching films, and walking in the countryside.
Kids can learn so much from this book about what it is like to use a wheelchair! As an ambulatory wheelchair user myself, even I learned things about wheelchairs that I didn't know before, such as the fact that there are sports wheelchairs specifically designed for speed. Other things I could really relate to. It was good to see the advice from the author about not talk to the person pushing the chair instead of the person with the disability and the advice about asking before trying to help. The pictures are photographs of people using wheelchairs, which I thought was cool and helped to make the information more real for the reader. Readers will can learn a lot about using wheelchairs, and they may even be inspired to help make the world more accessible for wheelchair users when they read about the challenges wheelchair users face and the way some buildings and vehicles are designed to accommodate them. This book provides a helpful list of other books about using wheelchairs and also a glossary of words used in this book.
This book explains wheelchairs, why they are used and what you should do if you see someone in a chair. USING A WHEELCHAIR is quite an informative book for your older child.
