A semi-fiction book that conveys the life cycle of a ledge on a coastal cliff. The thing is perfectly happy sitting there – and it might have told us so, there are that many annoying speech bubbles all over the shop – but it gets undercut, it cracks with the plant roots and ice breaking up the rocks, and eventually it crashes to the sea beneath. But the parts that are left have not finished their story… It's very basic science, and presented in graphic novel format as well, so remains fully coloured and pictorial and most accessible. Despite the cartoonish quipping that fails to impress, this is a success. A reprint of a 2006 book, it's part of a small set from the same team, and backs me up that they're all commendable stuff – certainly with nothing to quibble about here this could be just the way to go to engage a young future geologist. A strong four stars, for I see books such as the others in the set quite often, but earth science not so much.
With thanks to the author, publishers Bloomsbury Publishing PLC, and NetGalley, for providing me with a DRC of this book in exchange for my honest review.
The Science Works series is always a very fun and enjoyable way for younger readers to learn about scientific concepts.
This installment is no exception, with its description of what erosion is, how it happens over time, and what it's lasting effects are all really well explained. The book's bright and vibrant graphics, supported by the little jokes scattered throughout, combine to deliver an engaging and accessible reading experience for it's younger target audience.
Menarik!
