Was given this as a daily devotional from a Sunday School teacher of mine. It’s a nice, quick daily dose that helps exercise the habit of daily Bible reading.
Chambers is a mixed bag. Sometimes he will let loose with a profundity that will leave you wide-eyed for hours, and sometimes his emphasis on moral heroism makes you wonder how a Pharisee like this ever got so famous among evangelicals. His style is also maddening; it can read like a college professor giving prepackaged notes to freshmen-- kind of an "I'll teach you idiots but I'm not happy about it" feel. Taken as a whole, I'm not much of a fan. There is enough clarity and force here that I can understand people coming back to him, but I think I'll steer clear in the future. There are enough great authors in the world that I won't starve for lack of Chambers's short declarative sentences. On another note, the New King James is a good version.
A friend gave me this out-of-print book in mid-January. She learned I was a serious Oswald Chambers fan. Each day's reading has a paragraph by Chambers. The readings include OT, Psalms, Proverbs, and NT each day, going straight through. This will be a good variety for reading through the Bible this year. Update 12/31/2010: I again read this Bible (almost). It will take me another week to finish, but I have completed the Oswald Chambers daily devotional readings.
I have read through this Bible seven times, and just started my eight cycle. I have tried other daily devotional Bibles, but I always return to this one.
