Golosa: A Basic Course in Russian Book 2

Rate this book
Golosa: A Basic Course in Russian, Fourth Edition strikes a true balance between communication and structure. It takes a contemporary approach to language learning by focusing on the development of functional competence in the four skills (listening, speaking, reading, and writing), as well as the expansion of cultural knowledge. This best-selling Russian text also provides comprehensive explanations of Russian grammar along with the structural practice students need to build accuracy.

This was my second-year Russian textbook. Russian is a language which I have mostly forgotten in a remarkably short time - I never took to it the way I did German. I probably said everything I can really say about this book in my review of Golosa: A Basic Course in Russian, Book 1.

Looking through this now, I find that I can still sound out the cyrillic and sometimes remember the meaning of individual words, especially toward the beginning of the book. I don't think that's because this is a bad textbook - in fact it's better than anything I ever saw available in the US for 2nd year German. It simply reflects the fact that I didn't keep up my Russian and so it has rapidly faded from my memory.

Golosa is a great textbook to use in-class as well as on your own. I initially used this book in my university's Russian III and IV classes. Though I finished the program, I regularly use this for reference and as a refresher course. The explanations are useful and the activities are repetitive enough to help you learn the material, but not so repetitive that it becomes boring. This is a great guide to the Russian language.
