In this book, the author presents a complete system of defensive first, a new and sound foundation of bids and responses to allow safe and accurate search for your own contract; second, a preemptive style with which to bedevil the opponents; third, tools and tactics for use against special enemy opening bids; finally, an examination and evaluation of many new competitive conventions.
Since it was written in 1965, there’s a fair amount of outdated conventions and treatments. Excluding those, you will find this to be a great resource on judgement.
Parts of this book is obviously dated, at least my copy which was published in 1965. This is particularly true of the last chapter discussing various conventions of which are not widely, it at all used at the time of this reading(2016). However, the basics on takeout doubles, overcalls, and responses to each are still very good. The examples are clear and are good learning tools. If you are reasonably sure of current bidding conventions, this book is helpful and you won't get off track with the old conventions being discussed. It is still a good book for learning the basics on competitive bidding.
