Clemens, the lion that guards the library, fears that his job may be pointless and embarks on a quest to satisfy his curiosity that takes him to the children's room of the library
Clemens' Kingdom is about a lion statue who is king of the library, but he has never been inside. One day he follows a boy to the reading room and discovers the treasure he is guarding. After reading all the books he returns to his post satisfied once he knew all was well and worth guarding.
Chris Demarest both wrote and illustrated this picture book dealing with reading. A stone lion, becoming bored with guarding the public library, sneaks inside to see if it is worth guarding. He finds that it is.
The story and the pictures were both enjoyable and light hearted. Bright water color pictures reflect the bright cheery story.
The pictures extend the story by showing children reading and using the card catalog (do card catalogs exist anymore?....story worthwhile for that fact!). The kids in the story are having fun at it, too.
I read this book to all preschools who come and visit our library. I wish we had a music room and art since those don't seem to be things libraries usually have but that is the only flaw I find in the book.
Clemens is the lion statue outside a library. He decides to follow a boy inside one day and see what it is all about. The patrons in the library get a little scared but realize he is harmless because he is so enthralled with the books.
(must be out of print) Good for library story time. It's about a lion "statue" that sits outside the public library. He wanders inside one day to see if it is worth guarding.
