PRAISE FOR THE SURF DIVA SURF SCHOOL
"Surf Diva is the Starbucks of female-only surfing clinics; it's the model for scores of women's classes that have popped up around the world."-NEWSWEEK
"Surf Diva packed a real surf experience into two days. They taught camaraderie and chick power. They projected attitude, but not testosterone . . . Best of all, they got women . . . addicted to that rush of riding a wave. There is nothing like it." -LOS ANGELES TIMES
Good information stuck between rather outdated parts. You can tell that this book was written 20 years ago—the constant bits about girls loving to shop (while talking about environmental conservation no less), the bit where it implies that if a guy lets you have a wave you should… pay him back with a kiss (??), etc. The actual surfing information was very informative and cool but this was probably a lot more relevant twenty years ago.
I knew for years that someday I wanted to try out surfing. My problem was usually that I was nowhere near a beach. Last summer, when I booked a trip to visit friends in California, I also took the opportunity to track down a surfing instructor and get a lesson in. Then I hit the bookstore in search of a guide to help me prepare. I picked this book mainly because it was geared specifically for women, but I found it extremely helpful in terms of teaching me exercises to do for strength training, practicing my pop-ups, form, and learning the jargon ahead of time. I'm glad I did it, both because surfing is a very demanding sport and also is definitely its own subculture that you want to get to know so you don't sound like a poseur :)
This book is great, It's a guide for girls so they can get better at surfing. Why I wanted ton read this book is because I love to surf and go to the beach. And I wanted to get better at surfing.
