Strength in Numbers: Collaborative Learning in Secondary Mathematics

Rate this book
Students who work together, succeed together. Isn t that every teacher s goal?

Use group work effectively to create a learning environment in the secondary mathematics classroom. Learn how students experience learning mathematics in collaborative settings. Develop tasks, concepts, strategies, and tools that create successful group work and reach students of all abilities.

Written by a seasoned teacher, researcher and teacher educator with over two decades of teaching experience, the goal of this book is to support teachers in developing tools for effective group work in their secondary mathematics classrooms. Effective group work engages children s own thinking and allows them to work together to understand a concept. It can also address problems that often arise in typical mathematics instruction by providing a framework for teachers to create engaging learning environments. The book outlines ways to choose tasks, help students adjust to new ways of approaching schoolwork, and discusses the types of status problems that can impede the most earnest attempts at collaborative learning. This practical, useful book introduces tested tools and concepts for creating equitable collaborative learning environments that supports all students and develops confidence in their mathematical ability.

This book is chalk full of rich information. Some ideas that resonated with me:

Moving from teaching math to creating mathematical learning environments.

Assessments for learning! (A rich assessment doesn’t punish students for missed opportunities)

Teachers as supporters of equal-status interactions (so many times I tried to articulate this notion but I didn’t have the words until this book)!

Cultivating student’s positive interdependence.

Shifting our thinking about mathematics from math as a sequence of topics to math as a network/web of ideas!

Honoring multiple abilities and ways of knowing and doing mathematics! “What kinds of mathematical competence have a place in your classroom?”

Productive mathematical conversations = equal-status interactions!

Good guide on how to set up collaborative groups in math class, a big part is spent on a student's status how they are viewed by others and how make it so that everyone is valued. Need to go through this book again to figure out what posters to make and strategies to try. Look into making 4 roles for group members and groupworthy tasks also swap quizes for groups.

A lot of very useful ideas for reflecting on teaching practice, collaborating with peers, and creating a good learning environment.
