Ten years ago, forensic artist Jacy Urban escaped her abductor with no memory of that night. Now two teenage girls are missing, and all signs indicate that the same kidnapper is back on the hunt. When Jacy is attacked, it’s clear she’s the assailant’s next target. Only Detective Cash Rawson is there to rescue her—again. Can Cash help Jacy recover her memories before she’s silenced for good?
KIDNAPPING COLD CASE by Laura Scott is the dynamically suspenseful story of Jacy Urban - forensic artist, and Detective Cash Rawson.
While living in Madison and while still in high school, Jacy was attacked while heading home one evening from choir practice. She managed to escape and ran away, but ended up falling down a steep cliff. When Jacy was rescued, she had no memory of the attack or getting away. Her last memory is of seeing the “Colgate” house (nicknamed because of the picket fence in front that looked like teeth that needed brushing). Not even hypnosis helped bring her memory back. Shortly after she was attacked, two other girls, about the same age and similar in appearance to Jacy, disappeared. All three cases were never solved. Ten years later and living in the small town of Appleton, Jacy is happy to have found her calling of working with multiple police departments doing her part to help them catch criminals with her artistic drawings from witnesses’ details.
Cash was a new police officer when Jacy had been attacked and had worked on her case. He had been the one that had seen her running, as if for her life, and falling off the cliff and was instrumental in her rescue. He’s now worked his way up to detective. Through all the years, he’s never forgotten Jacy’s case. When the previous detective retired, the cold case became his responsibility. He went to Appleton to ask Jacy if she might remembered any more details hoping he could get her to possibly go back to the scene again with him hoping to job some memory. Little did he know that showing up when he did was going to save Jacy from another attack.
The resent attack on Jacy and the recent disappearance of two more young girls has Jayce fearful, but agreeing to do all she can in order to stop and catch this depraved criminal including returning to Madison and even trying hypnosis again. In the process, Jacy may have to explore all her emotions – loss of innocence of youth, fear of the unknown, lack of family, personal relationships, her chosen vocation. Is it possible Jacy is developed feelings for Cash or is it just that he’s been her skilled protector saving her life not once but multiple times?
Cash’s feeling in this case – for Jacy - seems to have moved from solving a cold case to willing to put his life on the line to save Jacy knowing he would gladly give his life to save her from the monster that’s intent on getting to her. Doubting that she could possibly see him as more than a detective, he knows when the case is over that she will return to her own life – which doesn’t have him in it. Regardless, his feelings prove that the best thing that ever happened to his was his ex- fiancé walking out on him because his feelings for Jacy are much, much deeper. Can his skills and his belief that God will direct their moves keep them alive?
How is this person keeping up with where they are and what they are doing? How can Cash keep them two steps ahead of this criminal - away from all these attacks - while trying to sneak up on him from behind in order to capture him at the same time? Who can they trust? Where will the next attack come from – and in what form? Who is this monster and what is he’s connection to Jacy? Why the space of years with no activity or threats towards Jacy? Not living in the same town, how had Jacy been found by her assailant? What happened to the missing girls – past and present?

My review today is on the Love Inspired Suspense, Kidnapping Cold Case. I'm a big fan of Laura's work. I'm always excited to get a chance to read one of her new books. This story is well-written, action-packed, and full of faith. I know you are going to love it.
Forensic Artist Jacy Urban had been called into the police station to help on a case. She was on her way home. It wasn't too late so she shouldn't be nervous. She wasn't a teenager like the missing girls plus it had been ten years since she had been kidnapped, So why was she so worried. As she reached her apartment she is attacked and the man sprays her with pepper spay, fighting back she screams. A man comes to her rescue, the same one who rescued her ten years ago.
Detective Cash Rawson worked for the police force in Madison. When he heard of the missing girls he was struck with how similar they were to Jacy's attack a decade ago. He came to Appleton to talk with Jacy, she was the reason he became a cop, but missed her at the police station. He followed her home and arrived as she was attacked. He was thankful he had been there to save her. She obviously is a target again.
An exciting journey to find the hidden secrets of Jacy's mind and stay out of the killer's sight. God has a plan for these two. A plan for hope and a future. God has a plan for you too. A good plan for peace and not for harm. Trust Him and make Him Lord.
Whoa — the opening scene is spine-chilling! And the reader is kept on edge all the way through. Phew! Some intense moments and there’s a definite stalkerish vibe as well as relentless pursuit. So, seatbelts and crash helmets advised!
Jacy and Cash have a special connection from a decade ago and now they are thrown together in a bid to stop a killer…da da da da duuummmmm. Bwahaha! Scary good. Fast paced. Lots of action. Punctuated by sweet ‘getting to know you’ moments that lead to romance. This one is definitely an insta-love kind of story but it works. And I like the way the author winds everything up. We’re given longer than normal down time to let things settle and give Jacy and Cash a chance to start dating without bullets flying. 🙂
I listened to the audible edition narrated by Emily Sutton-Smith. She does a wonderful job with these characters. Loved her tone of voice and performance. I’m becoming quite the audio book connoisseur and this book was easy to listen to.
seven stars. Jacy had relocated after someone attempted to kidnap her while walking home from school
Jacy had found her career after the night she had been the victim of someone trying to kidnap her on way home from choir practice. It was still early but dark winter evening. Cash had seen her run across road and followed her to help if she needed him. When she fell down in the ravin he was the one called the police and an ambulance. After waking up in hospital she couldn’t remember anything to help find the perpetrator. But she finished school as home taught. Then got her degree to become a forensic Artist and moved away to build her career. Cash also changed his major to get into police and become a well qualified in their home town. When one of the older detectives retired he inherited her cold cases. Jacy’s case was one-of them. When he contacted Jacy and opened the case again the perp came after her again.
I'm generously giving this book a 3 star rating because I appreciate the Christian values and clean writing. However those are the only reasons why because the actual story and the audiobook narration deserve a 2 (or less).
From the very beginning detective Cash Rawson's thoughts are about how attracted he is to the person he's committed himself to protect, Jaci Urban. Often his thoughts are how much he wants to pull her into his arms, and it feels creepy to me. It's fine he thinks she's beautiful but his feelings seem over the top, too soon. And their conversations seem so unreal, not the way people talk to each other. Some of their interactions remind me of listening to a couple 8 year old girls playing with their Barbie and Ken dolls. Of course, by the end of the book, they are both madly in love.
Forensic sketch artist Jacy is walking to her apartment when someone sprays her face with pepper spray and tries to pull her away. Fortunately, detective Cash was trying to ask her something and chased him off. But that someone is definitely trying to get her. That person seems to know what they are doing before they do! Can Cash keep her safe and figure out who is after her? Read this to find out.
The pace is breakneck and the tone is uncertain with an action and character oriented storyline that has no steam. The characters are well drawn. The Christian values are a part of the story but don't overwhelm it. Enjoy this thrilling Christian suspense romance.
Not up to other books by same author (or her editor)
An interesting plot but there were several places in the story where things didn't go in the right order. Sorry, right now I can't remember the word.
Example (not from the book): She found it so peaceful to lie underneath the tree. And then the next paragraph has her desperately hanging on to the branch of the tree. If she was so peaceful under the tree, how did she get up the tree hanging onto the branch?
I've never encountered this kind of error in a Laura Scott book before. This should have been caught by beta readers and/or the editor, It should never have made it to print because these errors are too easily spotted. Ergo, 3 stars
This latest from Laura Scott was an incredible mystery. Such suspense dealing with a serial killer. Jacy had come a long ways from her abduction ten years before when she was in high school. She worked hard at her job as an artist drawing portraits of suspects who attacked someone while committing a crime. While coming home one night she once again had been attacked. This time her calls were answered by an old friend, A detective with another Wisconsin police force. An excellent read that will keep you in edge. Do enjoy!
Wow! Lots of action and some intrigue. Forensic artist Jacy Urban was able to escape her from kidnapper ten years ago as a teen. But now someone is trying to grab her again and has already grabbed two other teen girls. What is going on? and why? Detective Cash Rawson is there to question Jacy to see if she has remembered anything from 10 years ago to help find these missing young ladies when someone tries to take her again. Can he keep her safe and they figure out who is behind these kidnappings?
I love a Laura Scott book! “Kidnapping Cold Case,” is full of action and suspense. It is well written and has good characters and a good storyline. Jacy Urban is a forensic artist. Ten years ago she escaped her abductor and is left with no memory of that night. Now there are two teens missing, and all the circumstances lead everyone to suspect that it could be Jacy’s abductor! Detective Cash Rawson once again comes to Jacy’s rescue, but can he keep her safe?
2.5 stars Not the best but not the worst I've read from Love Inspired. The msytery was OK. Not sure when they fell in love. It was way too fast for me.
