This book is a terrific introduction to embroidery. As activities like slow stitching and visual mending become more popular, a text like this is a terrific addition to a classroom or makerspace library.

What makes this book particularly effective is that each stitch is introduced with an individual design. All the design templates are provided in the book. This allows for multiple points of entry for learners. As a stitcher becomes more confident, they can choose to combine stitches and create their own designs. An embroiderer who is already familiar with the basics may find that their entry point is the middle of the book, or may simply choose a design that appeals to them. For people who want to use embroidery as a meditative task, the idea of tackling a stitch a day, and creating small samplers may be exactly the entry point they need. The clear instructions for how to finish a piece are also very helpful.

The book is well-illustrated, and can easily be supported with a quick Google search, if learners want a video of a particular stitch.

30 Day Challenge: Embroidery: A Day-by-Day Guide to Learn New Stitches and Create Beautiful Designs by Jessica Anderson is currently scheduled for release on January 30 2024. If you’ve always wanted to learn embroidery but haven’t known where to start, 30-Day Challenge: Embroidery is the perfect way to jump-start your creativity and get stitching. Even if you’ve never picked up a needle, you will quickly learn everything you need to know to master embroidery. After an overview of embroidery basics, author Jessica Anderson (Cutesy Crafts) shows you how to create—each day for 30 days—one new stitch and one embroidery design that features that stitch. The easy-to-follow projects include a variety of popular modern motifs such as flowers, birds, houseplants, rainbows, and more, and only take an hour or two, or less, to complete. As the book progresses, you will strengthen your skills with designs that combine multiple stitches. You can do one project per day in order or follow your own schedule and pick and choose. By the time you’ve stitched your way through the book, you will have an amazing collection of embroidery designs to hang up and display your skill and creativity.

30-Day Challenge: Embroidery is exactly what the title and description promise. A collection of information and projects in bite size pieces to help readers learn to embroider, learn some new stitches, or just keep using to skills you have to keep them fresh. I like that the designs are all relatively simple, and there is still room to change colors or small details as you go to make them fit in better with what you have on hand, or your personal tastes. The designs build on the taught skills as you go through the book, reinforcing what has already been covered and keeping things moving at the same time. I like that there is built in flexibility with the book. You could tackle a project a day in order, or you can change the frequency or skip around in the project order. I liked that the book included traceable templates for the projects as well as some extra designs to try that are a bit harder and more complicated than those included as lessons. I think this book would be good for those new to embroidery, those that have not picked up a needle in awhile, and those that just want to keep their skills fresh.

Have you always how embroidery was done? If you don’t know and want to learn how to do it, this is the book for you. I know how how to embroider but my stitches were limited. I even took a class which helped but it was so fast that I did miss how to do it. I now can do all the stitches in the book. It’s great to use because it starts out with what tools you need to get started with. It starts out with an easy stitch to do. I will admit with her clear instructions as you go through the book you should have no trouble doing the stitches and projects. It gives valuable tips. There are tips for finishing and showing off the hoops. The author sugges items that you can embroider that you might not think of. There are two bonus projects you can do too. Have fun! It’s a great skill to have. I also found that some of those stitches are useful for mending.

Disclaimer: I received an anc of this book from the author/publisher from Netgalley. I wasn’t obligated to write a favorable review. The opinions expressed are strictly my own.

“30 days, 30 stitches, 30 projects” Hmmmm… probably an unrealistic timeline. Though the projects are smaller in size, they might not be daily. However, 30 projects to introduce 30 stitches like in this book is a brilliant idea to learn embroidery.

The 30-Day Embroidery Challenge is an appealing and well laid-out embroidery tutorial manual by Jessica Anderson. Due out 30th Jan 2024 from Quarto on their Quarry imprint, it's 128 pages and will be available in paperback and ebook formats. This is a sister volume in the 30 Day Challenge series from the same publisher with other habit tracking and creativity prompts.

This guide presupposes no prior knowledge of embroidery on the part of readers. She has included a short pictorial intro for tools and materials as well as how to get started with the challenge. There are many (many!) online resources and youtube as well for readers who are starting without any support network, which can help a lot. She covers very basic supplies as well as transferring designs and tension hoops, etc.

The following chapters include 30 project tutorials including a new stitch-per-day. All the projects are small and very colorful. The author has included 2 bonus projects at the end which combine some of the earlier techniques and stitches and are slightly more complex and will take longer than a day to complete. There is no index included, but the table of contents includes a thumbnail gallery of color photos of the projects with page numbers. Full size templates are included in the book, along with a QR code to download the templates and additional materials electronically.

It should be noted that this book is about surface embroidery, not cross stitch. It's lovely to see tutorials and and upswing in interest for the other fibrearts; it seems like only cross-stitch had any following for a long long time and it's nice to see surface embroidery enjoying a renaissance.

Wonderful skill building tutorials. Four and a half stars.

Disclosure: I received an ARC at no cost from the author/publisher for review purposes.

I loved the idea of a 30-day challenge to jumpstart a new skill or to refresh an old one. I thought the Embroidery Challenge might be something that I could dip into for myself if I wanted to learn a new stitch or refresh my skills as well as using it to teach my grand-daughter to embroider. I still have memories of tray clothes and crinoline ladies that I would rather not dredge up! This uncomplicated and pleasingly present book contains 30 projects which are cleanly presented without excess words. All the projects look like something that could be completed quickly and not cost a lot. The project gallery begins with the basic stitches and become manageably more complex. My own favourite is ‘dandelion wishes’ as it uses a stitch I’ve never seen before and because the finished project is very stylish. I also like the fact that the embroideries are worked on different colour backgrounds. All the projects would make cute gifts, could easily be turned into cards or could transform a room with a personal touch. I shall be buying a job lot of embroidery hoops.
Key information and guidance at the start of the book provides clear advice to ensure that a novice stitcher ends up with a beautiful finished piece. All the projects are presented on a double page spread using a standard format. Each stitch is explained with the help of a diagram. It helped to have a sample of the finished stitch to look at while working the instructions. The chattiness, personal asides and tips ensured that the instructions were all manageable for a novice stitcher. My grand-daughter and I loved the bonus challenge and the ideas for what embroidery might be used for – no tray cloths or endless framed pictures here- I’m delighted to report. Jessica Anderson has produced a book which is a keeper.

--------------------------

This book is truly an excellent starting point for anyone who wants to start learning to embroider, learning the main embroidery stitches.
Each embroidery stitch is illustrated by a dedicated project and a description of the various steps to create it.
Valuable suggestions are also given to obtain the best results.
Small negative note: the photos of the stitches are really too small. They should be enlarged.

For those who, like me, want to learn it is certainly a perfect starting point for doing some practice!

Thanks Netgalley for letting me preview it.

I've done cross stitch as a hobby for years but never embroidery. I fancied giving it a go but had no real idea where to start so needed a guide for the complete novice, and this is the book for that. It covers every piece of equipment you will need, provides templates for the projects (and even suggests which pen is best used to put the transfer on your work) and shows you how to finish each work to display.

Clearly laid out with projects that start from the basic to more complicated stitches, I really liked the fact that even the first project with the most basic stitch left me with something beautiful. Each project is lovely in its own right and helps you build on what you're producing to help you gain confidence for bigger works in the future. I can't wait to work my way through them all!

Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for an advance copy in return for an honest review.

At the beginning of this book, the author explains basic embroidery techniques, and then she introduces a new stitch for thirty days, sharing simple projects people can do to build their skills. The designs are cute and appealing without being overly trendy, and the written instructions and diagrams are easy to follow.

Someone can do this as a thirty day challenge, can stretch this out over a longer period of time, or can pick and choose designs they especially like. However someone uses this book, it's a great way to learn basic embroidery skills and complete short, simple projects that won't take too long.

I would recommend this book to people of all ages who are interested in building their embroidery skills. This is geared towards adults, but the projects and written instructions are simple enough for kids to follow, and the book's content is clean and inoffensive for all ages.

I received a temporary digital copy from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

*Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher/author for providing me with an E-Arc of this book. The following is my honest opinion *

This is a perfect book for anyone trying to get into embroidery. As it states in the summary, "the perfect way to jump-start your creativity and get stitching. Even if you’ve never picked up a needle, you will quickly learn everything you need to know to master embroidery."

I love that it starts out explaining the tools one might need, how and what they are used for, and really teaching one the basics. My favorite part is the "Stitch Glossary" where it shows the different stitches and how they look. And then as one goes throughout the everyday challenges, as new stitches are introduced, they show you how to accomplish said stitch.

This makes for a wonderful gift for any occasion and for any one that trying to get into this hobby but doesn't know where to start.

Highly recommend it!

As someone who is new to embroidery myself, I love the idea behind this book. Each day in this 30 day challenge teaches you a new stitch and gives you a project to put your new skills to work. It includes all the essential basics for getting started, like how to correctly secure your fabric in the embroidery hoop, starting and stopping stitches, transferring images, et cetera. And all the projects are both approachable as a beginner, but also something you’ll be proud to have made and will want to show off to friends and family, or even give as gifts. The instructions are simple and are accompanied by diagrams, which I found easy to interpret. It even includes bonus projects and traceable templates for the projects in the back. Overall, I think this is an excellent resource for beginners.

I taught myself how to sew and embroider through trial and error. My crafts are good, some are even great, but I definitely needed some help.
Thank Jessica Anderson for the Embroidery 101. I've been stitching for more than 10 years and it took me until now to learn that I should be using different embroidery needles and that there's a better way to finish off my project than using a hot glue gun. I'm sure I could have learned all of these things had I simply looked it up, but honestly, I didn't really think about it until I found this book.

I'm sure there will be deferring opinions on this, but I found the worded description for each stitch easier to follow than the pictures. For the most part, the diagrams were not clear to me.
I would recommend this book to all beginners and anyone who already enjoys embroidery and is looking for some tips (like me).

Thank you so much for letting me read and review!

If you ever wanted to get started with embroidery, this is the book for you.

It teaches you 30 different stitches and for each one you get a cute pattern to put that new knowledge to use, which is the best part about this book, since just learning stitches without seeing a finished product can make you give up on this hobby quite fast.

The instructions are easy to follow, with helpful diagrams and real life pictures and this book includes everything from what materials you need to how to finish a piece. It also shows the patterns included in the book (that you can trace easily from the end of the book) used on different objects (shirts, tote bags etc)

I did embroider a bit before, but this book was a fun challenge that I can't wait to finish and see all the beautiful projects together

What a fabulous idea this book is. With just a collection of colored floss, a needle , a transfer pen, fabric and some embroidery hoops, this challenge teachers the various stitches to create 30, plus 2 set of hoops.
Each day there is a new cute design and a new embroidery stitch to learn., which are easily accomplished. Finally there are two more projects which take a little longer to complete as a bonus.. all designs are provided to trace from.
This is a lovely idea, rather than doing row on rows of the same stitch for practice, this one actually is fun to do. Thanks you NetGalley and the publishers for the DR

30-Day Challenge: Embroidery

4.5 Stars

30-Day Challenge: Embroidery is a beginner-friendly, fun, and challenging book. I'm completely new to embroidery, and I was able to follow along. This last book helps the reader explore a variety of stitches and techniques by building on skills one day at a time. I learned a few things! I'm currently in visual therapy for a concussion. So, I moved through this book at a slower pace. I'd highly recommend this book if you want to learn embroidery.

'30 Day Challenge: Embroidery' is a great book for all those who want to begin their adventure with stitching. The book gives step by step instructions followed by stitch patterns with appropriate level of difficulty. The patterns go from really easy to more complicated by they are all rather simple and easy to finish in no time so you will be admiring your finished work (of art) soon enough. The book provides modern approach to embroidery. The only thing I would change are the patterns, I would go for something more inspiring and a little bit more decorative.

I checked this book out from the new-books section at my local library and thought it was really charming and instructive. I haven't tried to make anything from it, but the instructions are clear and simple, and the projects look easy. I like how the projects go from simple to more difficult as the book goes on, and I think it would be fun to go through it from start to finish, learning all the stitches. Not all of the designs are to my taste, but one could easily change the colors, the details or even the entire design to better suit one's preferences.

A beautifully presented book consisting of everything you need to learn embroidery, set out as 30 projects, over 30 days, covering 30 stitches. Ideal for someone who has never embroidered before, each little project introduces a new stitch for you to learn. At the end of the 30 projects there are 2 bigger "bonus" projects that put together what you have learnt over the 30 projects.
This book as a modern feel and everything is clearly explained. All the templates are included at the back of the book and instructions on how to use them.

Great beginner level embroidery designs and instructions. Cute modern designs. I will purchase a copy for our middle school library and use it with our embroidery and sewing club. Nice clear instructions for each stitch and I like the concept of the 30 day challenge. Starts with basic stitches and each subsequent design adds instructions for another stitch. I have been embroidering for many years but I’ll be using this book to make some lovely gifts also.

Thanks NetGalley for the digital arc.

I received a copy of this eBook in exchange for a honest review from NetGalley.

I loved this idea of a 30 day challenge to learn 30 basic embroidery stitches! The designs are cute, small but not too small that you wouldn't get good practice with each new stich. The images showing the techniques are great, easy to understand. I will most likely get a copy of this book so I can officially learn all the types of stitches.

Wonderful contemporary designs and great tutorials from choosing the right needle size (even though across stitch, this was new to me) to framing your work. Plus great photos showing how to do the stitches.

The book is well indexed listing stitches, projects, and templates for tracing with their page numbers. I can't wait to get to the point where I can do the two cute "challenge" projects at the end that use all the stitches!

Wow! I've read/browsed through a great number of embroidery books over the years, and Anderson's takes the cake! She really does break it down in a way that beginners can understand and even just get started with figuring out what to buy. As the projects progress, you incorporate additional stitches from previous projects to reinforce what you've already learned. Brava!
