Brigitte Cromey has been known to daydream so heavily that a gong must be rung to retrieve her. (This annoys her family, who can never be sure if she’s actually heard what they’ve just said to her.)

When not submerged in worlds of her own making, she can be found cooking with bizarre ingredients, reading entire books in a single sitting, dressing her children up as fairies and knights, and occasionally responding to the world with kindness tainted by cynicism.

Brigitte lives in Southern Arizona with her husband and children. Should you encounter her, the kettle will always be on.

Yes, this is a second edition.
In many ways, this is also a first edition.

You see, this is the book that seventeen-year-old me dreamed of—from the words inside, down to the art on the cover—when she sat in front of a computer with dial-up internet and began writing. This is the story that she saw through to the end, even after years of learning, mistakes, and triumph.

We’ve come full circle, she and I, because this is the book that made me an author. I’ve come to realize that it’ll always have deficits, but such is the paradox of first books—they always set the benchmark upon which there will only ever be improvement. Yet, no matter how many more stories I write, this will always be the firstborn; the book that started me on my journey.

Some of you will have read the first printing of Star of Hope, and to you come undying appreciation and thanks. This story was never meant to be of just one chosen person, but of many incredible, ordinary people—and you are my ‘many’. Thank you for every message you’ve sent, every comment on my social media posts, every gracious review and recommendation, and every time you’ve said ‘I want this signed’. Jumping into the publishing world was like leaping out a plane without knowing if the parachute would open—and it did, because of you.

To you who’ve never read this tale, welcome. Here you’ll find a gaggle of friends who love each other enough to move mountains and shake seas. You’ll find a people desperate for hope and a girl who was born to lead them. You’ll find a father’s love displayed in practical ways, and a rebel with a sacrificial heart. Above all, you’ll find a story written to comfort and encourage (maybe even entertain). This is the heart of noblebright fiction, after all—to shed light in the darkness, to spread hope to souls who have none, and to instill fierce courage in faint hearts.

Welcome to the adventure.

Clean YA ☑️
Multiple POV’s ☑️
Lost princess ☑️
Epic friendships ☑️
Slow burn romance ☑️

A beautiful princess was born in the lands of Illyn, but situations of the country took a turn for the worse and her true identity had to be kept hidden from the world.

Coming to the story, bonding between all the kids was very adorable. They were ready to die for each other (wipes tears) Bridgette depicted all characters perfectly. They were fierce, understanding and full of life. Star of hope has some really interesting character, contributing with their humour in the story. Blossoming romance feels very refreshing to read. I have always enjoyed reading beginning of a romantic relationship more. Erven and Rose, I am at loss of words you guys. At such age, all these characters are so mature. I liked their (non existing at the moment) relationship more. I was always looking forward to read about their scenes more and more. I was delighted with the ending scene although it felt a little rushed and I was hoping to read more about these two but recently I came to know that there’s going to be a sequel of the story so I am just over the moon and can’t wait to read more of Ereven and Rose!!

I really enjoyed this one. It was somehow incredibly cozy to me, even though it made me cry at least twice. I loved the characters, and it felt like there was a whole lot of heart behind the story. Some projects are just special that way, and I love reading them. Sure, this is a debut novel and there are some areas that could maybe use a little bit of clarifying, but it was a good read regardless and I'm excited to read the next one. <3

Before I get into this book, I just want to have the disclaimer that I've read later work by this author, enjoyed it, and I also love this author to pieces. This review is a reflection only of this particular book and my thoughts while reading. (Stupid that I have to say this, but apparently this is where we are in this culture lol)

The Good:
A lot of care went into the world-building and it shows. There are totally different cultures presented in this book, and each is unique, down to the way each talk, dress, carry themselves, etc. I think this would probably be the strong point. There is a lot the author was trying to present and I think she nailed it with the world-building.

The Bad:
I struggled to get into this story. Never really "got into it" like I wanted to, which might be just me? But I think the main reason was that the story is majorly underdeveloped. I struggled to understand the characters and major plot points' significance because it was never developed enough for the reader to truly feel. As someone who struggles with this a lot in my own writing, I have a few guesses as to why this was the case, but it resulted in the emotions of the characters not coming across to me the way I think the author intended to, simply because not enough was shown to really get the reader to feel with the characters. It's a tricky thing to get right, especially in your first book.

What the Reader Thought:
Like stated above, I wanted to adore this book. Unfortunately I didn't, but I think that's only because it needed more development. (Also proofreading, but that wasn't a major issue, it was mostly some mistakes in the beginning.) I think I was also confused for much of the story because the blurb makes it sound like it's centered around Rose, but you actually hardly saw her on the page. It was mostly about the other characters, and Rose's development mostly seemed to happen off screen, so I had a hard time really relating to her. I think Violet and Willow were the best characters, and I could see a lot of the author in them, and I loved that.

So yeah. This book didn't deliver like I wanted it to, but it's not a *bad* debut. I've read the author's latest work and she's grown a lot. I'm still very excited to read her Aftermath trilogy releasing with Uncommon Universes Press, and will probably keep this book despite this review because the message in the beginning is so sweet. (And also because I love the author to pieces, as I already said. <3)

A delightful romping kingdom adventure, with a slew of characters to root for and some truly inspiring moments. Broken families, and mended ones, and themes of sisterhood. A whole lot of pluck.
I loved following the characters on their various journeys around this interesting world, and meeting the people they got to meet. Our cast of friends grows as the story progresses, even though we lose some along the way. The next installment is sure to bring more heartbreak and more joy, and I can’t wait to watch as this cast continues to mature!

EXCELLENT book!! I absolutely adore the main characters—Willow reminded me so much of my sister, Heather and Clover were delightful legends, and Violet and Rose both DEFINITELY need a hug. I can't wait to see where everyone's arcs take them, and to get more of these characters!

This is the kind of book that I’d put into my backpack and carry around with me wherever I go, just to have a little piece of comfort whenever I needed an escape.

The best way I can describe this book is cosy fantasy with stakes. It’s Lord of the Rings if the Shire was attacked and all the hobbits took up arms, knitting needles, and cooking utensils in the pursuit of Justice. Not vengeance. But a journey of fighting for peace in unruly times, all done with the quiet strength and diplomacy of a reasonable bunch of hooligans.

I absolutely ADORED the family dynamics these characters had - both in terms of found family and blood family. I loved the adventures went on and the people they met along the way. I loved how their determination changed the tide of events, and how the events they lived through changed them.

The book is written from multiple POVs. While Rose is the main character so to speak, we see how events are happening from multiple perspectives and in multiple places. It’s a really effective method of storytelling, and I think it was the perfect way to balance such a large cast of characters. In this way, no one was a side character. It gave me the chance to connect with everyone and it made my reading experience even better because of it.

Highly, highly recommend.

"The stars are so clear tonight."
"I always loved night patrol for that reason. No matter how bad things were down here, they're always the same up there. It reminded me of better days."
Star of Hope has a large cast of noblebright young characters who rise to meet adversity with wit, sarcasm, and enthusiasm without possessing annoying flaws or making selfish mistakes. A long-lost heir is hunted by an evil despot, protected by her village and her loyal friends, and becomes a rallying point for people burdened by slavery and oppression. There were so many new names and places that my brain had to work to keep up with them at first. Seafaring wanderers, various local tribes, and a group of forest outlaws with Robin Hood vibes are among those who join Rose’s cause. An alternate title for this book could be “The Medieval Heroine’s Guide to a Successful Rebellion” as much of the book dealt with the logistics of gaining support and managing an army. I appreciate when authors attend to the practical side of things. There was plenty of action and dialogue, which I like, and the writing style was fun and lighthearted, though there were moments of sorrow and trauma. Much of the violence was off-screen, with characters learning about it after the fact, though there are some bloody medieval battle sequences and descriptions of severe injuries. The author also pulled off a cute side romance without any kissing, which her followers will know is a thing, and though I enjoy a swoony kiss once in a while, this couple’s interactions were satisfying as written. My favorite characters were Captain Ricar and Merald. Though they had minor roles, they had the deepest inner struggles and underwent more change than characters who were already set in their beliefs. I would classify this book as Young Adult kingdom fantasy (no magic) with minimal language, though I recommend it to anyone who likes heroes who are truly good and praiseworthy.

3.5 stars.
Star of Hope was a very enjoyable read. This lovely novel is full of fun characters such as Rose, Violet, Erven, Ethan, Heather, and many more. Ervan was my favorite. He was so brave, noble, and eager to do the right thing. Really all of the characters were so brave. There was a large cast of characters  so I did have a bit of a hard time remembering who is who. But I got them all down eventually!
There was enough danger, and suspense to keep me eagerly turning pages. I was cheering Rose on as she set out to unite the people of Illyn.
The author did an excellent job of drawing me into the world in which her story is set. I also enjoyed Bridgette's writing style.
This was a fun read. It had a classic fairy tale feel to it. And I think my younger siblings would love it!
.
.BLURB:
When the country of Illyn falls, a baby is found on a riverbank by a man hiding from his past. Hidden deep in the woods, the heir to the throne grows up in secret, surrounded by a people who value peace above all else. When the fragile peace shatters, Rose’s future rests in the hands of those who love her the most. As her enemies close in, Rose and her friends must embark on a journey to gather forces of their own. Alliances are forged in blood as Rose confronts her own weaknesses to become the leader her homeland desperately needs—and unite a people shattered by pride, cowardice, and fear.

Hidden in the woods, the heir to the throne of Illyn grows up unaware of her true identity. But when the peace of their land is shattered, Rose and her friends must form new alliances to unify their country and lead it into a brighter future.

With a lost princess on a coming of age journey to face her fears and accept her rightful place on the throne, Star of Hope is a great example of classic YA fantasy, mingling the modern concerns of Throne of Glass with the traditional atmosphere of The Chronicles of Narnia. I most enjoyed the emphasis on family bonds and building friendships through shared values and loyalty. Noble freedom fighter Erven became a fast favourite of mine. With the large cast of characters, there were times where I struggled to connect to everyone. Overall, I thought Star of Hope was a strong start to set up the Tales of Sea and Skies series, and that it set up the thematic struggles of the characters well.

Thank you to the author for providing a free eARC of Star of Hope. These opinions are my own.

Thank you so much to the author for the gifted copy. I enjoyed this book very much, as I found the plot quite unique. There were a lot of players involved, which confused me at times but I eventually understood who was who! I enjoyed Erven, Ethan, and Violent the most, as I felt they were quite developed. I felt for all of them when they were faced with challenges and felt very upset when any of them were hurt. I will admit, I wish I could have gotten to know the other characters more, but I feel like the lack of getting to know them laid in the fast pace of this book. I wish we got to see more events that were mentioned and then were skipped over into the next scene when they were already happened. I feel like it would have helped me connecting to a lot of the characters, especially Rose and Willow. Otherwise, I do feel like this was a solid first novel. It really just needed more flesh but the bones and plot of it were there. I look forward to seeing what Brigitte writes next.

Clean, YA, epic fantasy with a big cast and multiple pov's
Funny, action packed and realistically written, this story has all you need in a clean YA (low)fantasy story.

Favourites:
- Quirkyness: I LOVED it. I haven't found a lot of authors yet, besides terry pratchett, who have managed to make me laugh, giggle or just smile at least every other page or so. Brigitte Cromey pulled it off! So many of her, often young, main characters each have their own quirky habits and mannerisms that add depth and so much enjoyment to this story.
- Action: as a writer myself, I was very much impressed with the author's ability to write a good, full epic battle scene. These scenes had lots of things going on, tons of people, sounds, visuals, feels, and yet were written in a way that was easily overseable to me as a reader. The battles felt like they should: chaotic, noisy, horrible, but I knew exactly what was happening at all times, and I think that is a very rare talent in an author!
- Within Genre bounds: this story really fits in the YA category in every way. We have YA main characters ranging between their mid- and late teens who struggle with finding out who they are, what's important to them and what their place is in the world. We have some blossoming potential for romance here and there. We have tight friendships. And we have a whole lot of epic, action scenes which are made realistic and devastating to the reader without exposing us to lots of gore anything else that would be inappropriate for a young YA reader.
- Realistic: I could name so many other things I loved about this story. But the main thing that most of it comes down to is that it felt realistic: we laugh, we cry, we hurt, we love, we fight, we dream and most of the interactions just feel so real. So many of these interactions I can compare so similar little moment's I've had with my own friends and family, and that made it easy to relate to. Despite such a big cast, the characters were all 'in character' and spot on.

What I missed:
- Inner dialogue: what I missed is a difficult question to answer, because I really enjoyed this one. I think though that the only thing that has kept me from giving it 5 stars, is the fact that I personally prefer a little more inner dialogue. I prefer to feel a little more like I'm IN the main character's shoes. And although the story was wonderfully engaging and I didn't feel disconnected, ever, I do think that some more inner dialogue might have helped me feel just a bit less like I was on the outside looking in. That's all.

Sexual content: none
Coarse language: none
Violence and gore: moderate violence (war), very mild gore
Trigger warnings: mostly offscreen torture
*This book is clean and even the violence is written in a way that it would be suitable for even younger YA readers

Conclusion:
If you like epic battles, high stakes, quirky younger sisters, the orphan-to-royalty trope, and endearing sisterhood bonds and friendships, you need to go grab yourself (or your kid) a copy of Star of Hope. I can highly recommend this one, and am looking forward to the sequel.

What drew me in first was the quirky, fun-loving, affectionate lead characters; especially the sisters, Heather and Clover, with their unique brand of familial interaction and love of hats. Along with them, Rose, Violet, and Willow embark on life-changing journeys filled with heartbreak and danger, with ample bravery and realistic reactions to keep me glued to the pages.

The battles scenes are fantastic. The writing style is beautiful without becoming clunky. The plot is satisfying. The world-building is excellent. The ending promises more without leaving the reader dangling off a cliff.

This is nearly a five-star read for me, except for occasional head-hopping, and a missing connection to Rose, the main character. I felt her plight from time to time, but she left less of an impression than those around her, and I wanted to feel more of her growth throughout. While I can easily identify the other important characters, Rose is a bit harder. Part of that is her natural subtlety, and that's not a bad thing. But I'd like to have known her a bit better by the end.

I'm excited for the release of Book 2. Can't wait to read more about these lively characters and get more into Rose's head.

I loved it! It wasn’t perfect, but the story was thoroughly engaging. It was an amazing adventure, and I will definitely be adding this book to my collection.

The only problem I had with this novel was how rushed the character development felt. It seemed forced in order to get to the action more quickly. I felt like there was more to the story that I was missing because the action came outta nowhere.
I also wish I had more backstory about the conflict and the villain. I felt like I had no idea why Lord Kuma was bent on destroying so much in order to get to Rose. How had he come to power in the first place? And if he was so terrible why did he have so many followers? I wanna know more!

My FAVORITE part of the book was the female friendships! While it could be difficult to keep track of all the girls, I absolutely adored how they cared for and expressed affection towards one another. I loved how even when their friend Rose was revealed to be royalty, there was no jealousy among them. They were all there for her, serving her with their individual talents. And just because she suddenly found herself “superior” to her oldest friends, didn’t stop her from needing them as much as before, if not more so.
(As an aside, I was also grateful for and made good use of the Cast of Characters glossary in the back. I may or may not be stealing that concept for my own novel with a large cast. 😂)

Basically, the only problem I had with this book was that there wasn’t enough. Not enough character development, not enough backstory, not enough pages! Lucky for me there’s a sequel, and I cannot wait to read more!!! ❤️❤️❤️❤️

This book was lovely!! I absolutely ADORED the sisterhood, and the fact that most of the main characters were non-combatants, but still portrayed as heroic and useful and strong!! Also, Heather and Clover were ICONS. And Alder was so great

I enjoyed this!
It didn’t beg me to finish it, but I generally looked forward to picking it up for a few pages or chapters each evening. My 13yo read it before/with me and I saw no issues with her reading it; I think I’d you’re okay with some fighting scenes (some description but not much), it’s okay for 11ish or maybe even a bit younger.
Sometimes I felt a bit flung around, as though I’d missed things or something had been left out of a scene, character development, or plot line, but I generally enjoyed the characters (I wanted to better understand the quirkiness of Willow & her fam, and have a better feel for Rose’s journey from fearful hidden child to strong - though still uncertain - leader, etc) and story.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.

When the truth of Rose’s family history and the fate of her home and country hang in the balance with her life, she and her friends must find who Rose is meant to be, and fight for what’s right for those they love.

I really like that “Star of Hope” is a “secretly royal” story that, instead of making the trope the main plot and mystery, focused on Rose’s journey to step into that role and reclaim Illyn. I loved the different daily lives and experiences of the peoples of the story world and felt like everything was built realistically with a lot of research and rich detail. Packed with politics and war strategies, as well as several POV characters, it was difficult for me to follow at first. But after I picked up on what was going on with which party and who was who, it was fun to see how all of the storylines and different areas of the world converged in the bigger picture. With the numerous POVs, I will say I missed personally connecting to the changes and journeys each character went through (as other characters seemed to notice about one another), but I did love the themes of family and friendship and how the characters interacted with one another. I especially enjoyed the three sisters, and the dynamic between Willow and Ethan.

I would recommend this book to readers who appreciate well-thought battles and tactics, low fantasy, and sweet, found family stories.
