Spider-Man knows that Daredevil is the blind lawyer Matt Murdock, whose other senses were heightened as the result of a freak childhood accident. And Daredevil knows that Spider-Man is Peter Parker, who gained his amazing abilities from an irradiated spider bite.
Both Spider-Man and Daredevil have their fair share of laughable foes: Stilt-Man, Gladiator, the Owl, Copperhead. But no one is laughing anymore. Something has happened to these enemies -- something terrible and diabolical, transforming them into icons of darkness.
Now Spider-Man and Daredevil find themselves caught at the crossroads of their vengeance, forced into the position of protecting the Kingpin of Crime from an enemy they never could have imagined.
This book collects the Marvel Knights limited series brought to you by the talent of acclaimed writer Paul Jenkins, Paul Winslade and Tom Palmer.
Paul Jenkins is a British comic book writer. He has had much success crossing over into the American comic book market. Primarily working for Marvel Comics, he has had a big part shaping the characters of the company over the past decade.
Storyline started good, it seemed a classic noir Spidey/Daredevil team-up with a modern update of classic DD villains (and I totally forgot Melvin Potter was not the only one Gladiator), but storyline quickly went downfall with a rushed esoteric twist and everyone just seemed acting out of character: Spider-Man making jokes in front of freshly dead people, Kingpin hiring Murdock, Foggy flirting with Black Widow and Natasha speaking like a pornstar....
At last Peter/Matt chemistry and artworks were good.
Daredevil/Spider-Man is a crossover mini series that takes ultra serious Daredevil and pairs him with wise cracking Spider-Man. I don't think Matt Murdock really appreciates Peter Parker's sense of humor.
There are two different plots going on throughout this book. One is about Kingpin blackmailing Matt Murdock into defending him in court. Guess in this spot on the timeline Kingpin knows Matt Murdock is Daredevil and is using that to his advantage. Kingpin is also blind in this timeline, it's never explained though.
I'm having a hard time deciding what to actually rate this book. It's almost 3 stars, in that Jenkins' writing is straightforward and unproblematic, with decent character stuff from Daredevil and Spider-Man respectively. The first 3 (of 4) issues all blend together nicely to create a decently-told if run-of-the-mill crime caper. But when you view this thing as a whole, particularly including the fairly terrible final issue, it just doesn't really work.
First of all, this is a team-up comic that has no reason to be a team-up. The entirety of the mystery and case revolve around Daredevil and his rogues gallery. Spider-Man only seems to be there because he was in the area or something. So, we have no stakes for one of our characters.
Second, the little sidestory "team-up" between Foggy Nelson and Black Widow is completely extraneous, serving only to introduce Black Widow as an entendre-dropping sex object who punches, like, one dude.
And finally, I had no idea that a 4-issue limited series could jump the shark, but it looks like they somehow managed to. The final issue in this thing is INSANE. I don't want to spoil it, but let's just say it would be like you were watching an episode of Law & Order, and all of a sudden it was revealed that one of the characters had been an actual wizard the whole time, and then started doing a lot of magic. It comes completely out of nowhere, is totally unjustified, and then proceeds to end on a question mark. It reeks of Jenkins having no idea what to do with it, and kind of defeats the purpose of reading any of this.
So, I'd say avoid this one (which shouldn't be hard, since it's been out of print for like 12 years). But just in case you get the urge to buy it on eBay or something, you've been warned.
Started off well but quickly devolved (as many Daredevil writers are wont to do) into bizarre, disjointed supernatural nonsense. The writing was cheap and the art, while not awful, did weirdly make all the men look like they were, you know, packing heat.
There were some good fun bits and the art was good with massive poses. But the story started good, turned into some religious shit and regrouped a bit to end. But without art, this would've been a turd.
