Suellen Ocean's Secret Genealogy is a "how-to" genealogical reference book for those who want to trace their ancestry back hundreds, perhaps thousands of years by following historical trails. European and American surnames and history are discussed in a fun manner even though the book weaves through the serious topics of the Inquisition, the Diaspora, Slave Trading and Secret Societies.
With a Bachelor of Arts degree from Sonoma State University, Suellen Ocean does her writing from the hills of Northern California. She began writing professionally for print and radio broadcasting in the late 1980's. Her first self-published book led to her becoming "officially" published, when in 1998 she was asked to participate in the anthology, "The Simple Life" through Berkley Books, New York. She is the author of sixteen books on diverse subjects.
I wanted to love this book. I had been crossing my fingers to win my very own copy each time there was an opportunity. I finally purchased it and planned to revel in its awesomeness. What I discovered is a book written by a very enthusiastic family history researcher. Ms. Ocean has invested hundreds of hours in uncovering her roots and the history surrounding her family. This book is intended as a resource to help others who are also looking at their roots to realize or discover the possibility of Jewish ancestry. It isn't quite what I expected, though I can't really say what I -die-hard expect. The book is a bit repetitive in some areas. And far-reaching in others.
Secret Genealogy by Suellen Ocean is a wealth of information. It is well written and researched with a good biography in the back. It explores some possibilities to look at if you are researching your family geology. It explains some secrets which every family has at least a couple. it is also an interesting read if you like history.
Fascinating. Eye-opening. Easy to read and much to learn. I bought a copy to give as a gift to someone I know who has been working on the genealogy of her own family. We are a small world, and this book proves it. As Maya Angelou said, "We are more alike, my friend, than we are unalike."
