Nicolas Flamel was a successful French scrivener and manuscript-seller who developed a posthumous reputation as an alchemist due to his reputed work on the philosopher's stone. Due to the many legends that accrued to his name, he has sometimes been supposed to be the creation of 17th-century editors; however, more recently official documents relating to his life have been found, including his marriage contract with Perenelle, his deeds of gift, and his will. Nevertheless, the works published under his name are highly disputed, and are more often described as "attributed to" rather than "written by" him.
