A humorous, straightforward guide to knitting by a celebrity knitting instructor draws on her more than thirty years of experience teaching and knitting for Hollywood stars and fashion stylists, in a primer complemented by anecdotes, project outlines, and technique demonstrations. Original. 30,000 first printing.
Ugly patterns (although the scarves are fine) from the self-aggrandizing owner of La Knitterie Parisienne. There are some decent tips in here, but you have to slog through so much celebrity name dropping that honestly, do we care?? I just want to knit!
Hit the deck running (I know it is hit the ground running)
Yep, another get-started knitting book. But before you decide you are way beyond the beginning, don’t you want to learn how the stars learn? The best books are those that tell you what you already know yet comes at it from a different angle.
For those of us that are beginners or perpetual beginners, this book covers everything from the original cast to many of the beginning skills needed such as “Saving a Dropped Stitch”, and “Measuring Armholes”
And is this magazine/book thick? After taking advantage of the information, you can use it to sit up higher at the table. The front and back cover has flaps that can be used as bookmarks so there is no excuse for laying this open and face down. We have the standard glossary, index, and recourse list.
I enjoyed the celebrity aspect of this book. There's a lot of celebrity knitters out there: Debra Messing, Dakota Fanning, Daryl Hannah, Ashley Olsen, Sandra Bullock, to name a few. Also, the author has knitted a lot of items for show business that I've recognized and admired. (Like Scarlett Johanssen's scarf in "Lost in Translation.") However, the actual patterns are nothing I would make, and in yarns I couldn't dream to afford! There was one bag that I really liked and might queue on Ravelry but that was it. But if I ever find myself in L.A. with a free afternoon, I'll definitely check this place out for a chance for celebrity-knitter sightings! :)
This is why I started "test-driving" knitting books at the library...that and they're expensive!
