This series of Winnie the Witch books is different from the full colour, larger size ones that I usually read and although the two characters, Winnie and her quirky but adorable cat Wilbur, are just as good the stories don't seem to come over quite the same. Whether it is the pen and ink line drawings as against the full colour images I am not sure … or whether it is just me, I wouldn't like to say!
Anyway in the four stories in this volume, 'Winnie's House Party', 'Winnie's Pedal Power', 'Winnie Minds the Baby' and 'Winnie Goes for Gold', Winnie is up to her usual eccentric tricks and gets herself into the same sort of scrapes as she always does. And Wilbur tags along as usual and joins in the mayhem.
In the first of these Winnie decides she is going to have a house party and the preparations for this are absolutely chaotic, with lots of screams of Abracadabra coming from her mouth to sort things out. The cast of eccentric characters that attend the party eventually tire Winnie out so at the end when they all depart, she and Wilbur are once more settled in an empty house with silence all around them … absolute bliss!
In Pedal Power, Winnie wants to do her bit for 'the animals and birdies' so she develops a method of using less fuel. But it all ends in disaster until that cry of Abracadabra saves the day! And whoever would trust Winnie and Wilbur to mind the baby must be mad and so it proves as Winnie and Wilbur's antics on the swings and slide prove troublesome. And Winnie has to resort to her magic to get the baby back to his former self before she hands him back to mother.
Finally Winnie enters the school sports in rather bizarre fashion as she gets involved with a swarm of honey bees, which assist Winnie to run, jump, hurdle, vault and swim faster and further than anyone else at the sports. So, for the first time in her life, Winnie wins a 'pongwort trumpet-leaf crown' as woven by Wilbur. She goes to bed after all her exertions and dreams of driving a chariot pulled by Wilbur and chased by bees!
15 October 2024 And 'Winnie Goes for Gold' finishes my Halloween reading for this year and great fun it was!
In this volume she is throwing parties for all and sundry with the usual chaos ensuing, doing her bit by trying to save the planet and help the animals and birds, minding the baby but how she got that job quite escapes me, and making a beeline for the school sports day and a sticky mess that ends up!
All in all Winnie and Wilbur cemented their place well up in my pantheon of fictional characters. Thank you Laura Owen and Korky Paul.

My first book in Spanish!! This book, probably targeted at 7-8 year olds, was perfect for me trying to learn Spanish. The short stories had a good range of vocab and they were fun little stories that moved at a good pace. This was really fun for me to read and feel accomplished! (Yes, Google translate helped along the way— especially with random words describing bugs!)
