Wayne Mack lives in Pretoria, South Africa, where he serves as a pastor-elder with his son-in-law and teaches biblical counseling at Strengthening Ministries Training Institute to pastors and aspiring pastors in the region. He also spends about six weeks in the USA teaching at various churches. He and his wife, Carol, have four adult children and numerous grandchildren.
Any book which challenges us to "pray more and more like Jesus" is worthwhile, and this book does so in a serviceable way. You can benefit from reading this book.
At the same time, the author's exegesis stretches word studies a little farther than legitimate at times. The style is earnest but pedestrian. He quotes others a bit excessively, and you would probably be better off reading the books of those he quotes rather than this book.
Mack is a great teacher - very clear. There are a massive amount of application questions throughout the book, so this would be an excellent book for someone looking for devotional material.
I really wanted to like this book. I have read other books by this author and enjoyed them, but this one was hard to get through. The topic is very important and one I was interested in; however, the book reads much like a textbook in a dry and technical sense. There were large portions of the book that quoted other writers, and so many study questions mixed into the chapters (probably 12+ each chapter). On the whole, I feel it could have been condensed. Definitely a thorough book, but the writing style didn’t hold my attention even though I was interested in the topic. For new believers, this book would be overwhelming.
You can always rest assured that Wayne Mack books will be biblically sound and full of insight. This book moves slower than all his others that I've read & and is perhaps a bit wordy. Every other book I've read, which are more in the counseling genre, are right on-target, with no wasted words. This seems to go on a bit within each chapter, but as always, Mack's wisdom edifies.
