5 YEAR ANNIVERSARY EDITION One ship, one last chance to survive…Humanity’s home world has been destroyed from extensive global warming. For over two hundred years the last remaining humans have lived in space aboard a single massive ship, the Saisei. After generations in space, living aboard a ship is all anyone has ever known. But space is an inhospitable home. The ship is old and damaged, rations are low, and a planet fit for colonization has never been found. In the vast expanse of space, as the Saisei makes way to resupply their ship, they stumble upon a discovery that will change the course of human history forever. Fire Fury Freedom is the Prequel to this book.
Wow! After reading Fire Fury Freedom I was really excited when I saw the pre-order pop up for this. When my copy arrived I found I couldn't put it down. I love the new characters, the concept, and all of the discovery. Amanda is a MASTER at space opera; her world building and alien development is pure magic! The ending was a bit of a cliff hangar so I'm counting down the days until the next comes out! I really hope this gets made into a movie or TV show, it would be incredible on screen. A MUST READ!!!
This is my new favorite book. It's funny because I wasn't sure at first, but by the end of chapter 2 I was hooked. Xan is by far my favorite character, the story is immersive, and the characters come to life right off of the page. Brilliant. The next one better come out soon because I need to know what happens next!
There was so much depth to this book that I'm about to start a second read-through. I really enjoy a book that can pull me in and then it's like peeling back the layers of an onion, each page reveals a new idea, discovery, or perspective.
For the past two hundred years, the multi-generation ship Saisei has travelled the galaxy, looking for a new planet for its human passengers to colonize. There is no Earth to return to.
While approaching an asteroid-sized iceberg (the ship is almost out of water), those who are not satisfied with the current government stage a takeover attempt. It is put down, but with many casualties. On the other side of a nearby gas giant planet, the humans just happen to find a wormhole. At the other end of that wormhole is the interstellar equivalent of the United Nations. It is an immense space structure, so old that no one knows who built it, and home to thousands of beings. The humans are welcomed as new members of the Bastion.
The area is the hub of many different wormholes. A derelict ship comes through a wormhole that hasn’t been used in several hundred years. Further investigation shows that it is infested with sentient tendrils that can easily survive in deep space. They can eat through metal, and they live on electrical energy. The tendrils are controlling the ship, because destroying it takes a couple of attempts. A sample of a tendril is analyzed; it seems to be almost indestructible. Later, the sample is taken back through the wormhole and released, just to see what happens. It turns out to be a really bad idea.
This novel is surprisingly good. It helps that it is Part 1 of a series; I look forward to reading the rest of it. This story has it all; humans looking for a new home, deep space, an alien confederation, good characters and hideous alien invaders. It is also a very fast read. Yes, this is really worth the time.
What I liked: The story is full of imagination and adventure. If you like fast-paced sci-fi, you will enjoy this book. I found the characters well-thought our and the world-building solid. What I disliked: I’m not the biggest fan of anime, and this story developed in my head a bit like an anime sci-fi, space opera. That’s not to say it was bad, but rather, not how I envisaged it from the description. I also found some of the phrasing a little off. Perhaps it is my age, but there were some turns of speech that I didn’t fully grasp what the author was trying to say.
Overall, a good read with some surprises and loads of action. I’d recommend it!
It's a good story, and the start of a potentially epic series, but.....
It suffers from incorrect use of English. Some phrases are convoluted. There are too many homophones cropping up. It's almost as if the book has been transcribed from an audio file, possibly by someone whose literary skills are slightly lacking.
It's quite a good read provided that you can put up with the irritation.
Entertaining but there was not enough character development to keep me interested. After reading more than 80% I realized I didn't care what happened to the main characters, I felt no connection, which is sad because the plot was really interesting. The characters with telekinesis made no sense to me, I would have preferred them to have a personality instead of a special power.
Beautiful space opera, carefully wrapped up in one book at a believable pace. The only reason that I did not give it 5 stars was due to a half chapter of gratuitous sex scene that I was not expecting.
I really enjoyed reading this sci-fi novel. It is well written and I can understand how it has won awards. For any UK readers, couldn’t help thinking of Lister, Rimmer and Cat on Red Dwarf.
A great new science fiction book! New worlds, amazing ships, interesting relationships. But heads up! There are sequels, and this one will leave you hanging.
