This was a really optimistic look at the future of the workplace and it seemed like some really idyllic trends were emerging in the private sector at the time this book was written, according to the author. However, I wish there was an update postpandemic - I think the trajectory workplaces were on (to really be enriching and personalized for workers) maybe stalled and back-slid in the last decade or more, and I would be interested in that comparative data.

While browsing the bookstore, I came across the book “Happy Monday.” The phrase on the cover caught my attention: “Unless you want to be good, you can’t return the pleasure to yourself.” Intrigued, I quickly read the back cover and a few pages, and without hesitation, added it to my shopping basket.
In this book, Richard Reeves aims to change the negative view of work. He argues that in today’s advanced society, work is no longer hard and exhausting as it was in the past. The love of work has blurred the boundary between work and personal life for many people. True happiness lies in purposeful and meaningful work, as we spend most of our days in the work environment.
However, I expected the book to offer solutions to improve working conditions, which it did not. The conditions mentioned are based on advanced countries where the workforce is valued, unlike industrialized and developing countries where people are paid for their time, not their production.
