The Turks in Egypt and their Cultural Legacy

Though Egypt was ruled by Turkish-speakers through most of the period from the ninth century until 1952, the impact of Turkish culture there remains under-studied. This book deals with the period from 1805 to 1952, during which Turkish cultural patterns, spread through reforms based on those of Istanbul, may have touched more Egyptians than ever before. An examination of the books, newspapers, and other written materials produced in Turkish, including translations, and of the presses involved, reveals the rise and decline of Turkish culture in government, the military, education, literature, music, and everyday life. The author also describes the upsurge in Turkish writing generated by Young Turk exiles from 1895 to 1909. Included is a CD containing Appendices of extensive bibliographic information concerning books and periodicals printed in Egypt during this period.

About the author

Humphrey Davies was an award-winning translator of some twenty works of modern Arabic literature, among them Alaa Al-Aswany’s The Yacoubian Building, four novels by Elias Khoury, including Gate of the Sun, and Ahmad Faris al-Shidyaq’s Leg over Leg. He also made a critical edition, translation, and lexicon of the Ottoman-period Hazz al-quhuf bi-sharh qasid Abi Shaduf (Brains Confounded by the Ode of Abu Shaduf Expounded) by Yusuf al-Shirbini and compiled with a colleague an anthology entitled Al-‘ammiyyah al-misriyyah al-maktubah: mukhtarat min 1400 ila 2009 (Egyptian Colloquial Writing: selections from 1400 to 2009). He read Arabic at the University of Cambridge, received his Ph.D. from the University of California at Berkeley, and, previous to undertaking his first translation in 2003, worked for social development and research organizations in Egypt, Tunisia, Palestine, and Sudan. He was affiliated with the American University in Cairo.

يوحى الكتاب انك ستكون امام موسوعة تستحق الدراسة ولكن تكتشف ان بها حشو كثير وتفاصيل كثيرة لمحاولة تجميل علاقة الدولة العثمانية بمصر فى مرحلة كانت نظام محمد على اشد مايمكن فى العداوة مع الدولة العثمانية واتى بعده الاحتلال الانجليزى .....ولو يوجد محاولة لوصف العلاقة بين الدولتين فانها فترة سيئة وتاريخ لا نتنمى العودة اليه

الكتاب فى رأيي الشخصى أقرب للدراسة الأكاديمية أكثر منه قرأة تاريخية والتقييم العالى نظرا للمجهود المبذول فى الدراسة ولكن الكتاب بعيد عن المتعة
