For a Christian, waving the white flag doesn’t mean, “I give up!” It means, “Victory at last!”
Struggling with stubborn habits? Secret sin? Spiritual strongholds? The key isn’t how committed you are to the battle—it’s how surrendered you are to God. This truth can be your breakthrough, the first step towards a deeper, richer, victorious spiritual life.
With her compelling mix of profound biblical insight and personal example, Nancy DeMoss Wolgemuth reveals why it is only when you surrender your heart, your soul, your body, your ambitions—everything—to God that He can fully help you triumph.
You can win that battle. You can have that victory. But not until you learn to surrender .
Surrender is the second book in The Revive Our Hearts Series, which has sold well over 240,000 copies! With study questions at the end of each chapter, it is ideal for personal or small group study.
Nancy DeMoss Wolgemuth also known as Nancy Leigh DeMoss is the host and teacher for Revive Our Hearts and Seeking Him, two nationally-syndicated programs heard each weekday on over 1,000 radio stations. She is a mentor and spiritual mother to thousands of women and a leader of the True Woman movement.
I bought and read Surrender probably twenty years ago. This year, I pulled it out as my January study book. Wow. Did it really pack a punch. Aside from a couple of caveats, I loved this study and will be going through my notes over and over, I'm sure.
Surrender offers a look at what it means to be the BONDSLAVE of God--to utterly surrender all we are, have, will be, and the rest to Him before we have a clue what He'll do with it.
The biggest takeaway I had from this book was the thought that all "control" we think we have is an illusion. I got to thinking about it, and I realized that this so-called "control" is dependent on so many factors--99.99% of which we have zero control over and cannot possibly gain control over. This leaves us with only an illusion that we can control anything. With that in mind, why would we think that surrender to the One who controls ALL is anything but the greatest blessing the Lord could bestow on our Christian walk?
I feel a little guilty complaining about the repetitiveness of the questions when the act of surrender is often a repetitive thing. We try to yield and let go over and over only to learn later that we snatched it back again when we weren't looking (or at least we delude ourselves into thinking we have that control). But the problem with the repetitive questions was that it diluted my mind's working on the ones I'd already answered. I had to try to reframe the answer or try to see where I'd missed something. In the end, instead of making me dig deeper like I would have liked, it kept me spinning on the surface.
I also found the abundance of anecdotal stories distracting from the focus on the Word, which is another ridiculous thing for me. I learn best through story, so why was it so distracting this time? I don't know. Still, in the end, I loved the book, took 120 pages of notes and discussion answers, and see a change in how I approach things since starting it, so it obviously did its job of dragging me to the Word so God can begin that surrendering change again in my heart.
Though “Surrender” is book two of a trilogy, and though it is helpful to read it with the groundwork of “Brokenness,” it is an amazing little book in and of itself. Many of the elements that I mentioned in “Brokenness” are true for “Surrender” as well. There is no excuse to read this and say, “Well, she didn’t really cover my aspect of life.” Nancy is very thorough in presenting principles that are applicable for every aspect of life.
Once again, this was my second time to read this book, and I needed it so much right now. My heart echoed many of the testimonies that were in the book, and it was refreshing to realize that other people go through similar points in life as I do. Not only that, but to come face to face with truths presented and then brought to the point of, “What will you do with it?”
I listened to this as an audiobook, and I somewhat preferred reading it, as many times a Bible reference is given, but not quoted. Were I reading this, I would have stopped and looked up each of the verses that Nancy shared, and it would have been far more richer (as it was, I listened to it while walking, so stopping to look up references wasn’t exactly convenient).
Just like “Brokenness,” this is a very solid, Bible-based book, and is well worth the read.
Opinión: Este libro me encantó.
Perhaps this book isn't quite as difficult to read as the first one in the series (Brokenness), but it's certainly challenging and inspiring. How easy is to recognize everything we have as God's: all "our" hopes and dreams, "our" closest friends, and the very life in "our" bodies? That sounds impossible, but fortunately, surrender is a daily process. We can't expect to master it in a weekend, but we do have to make the choice to surrender to God every day in order to grow. Basically, surrender is another thing that's all about growth. Recently I'm often finding the concept of constant growth as one of the most important aspects of following Christ. As Curdie admits in The Princess and Curdie, "I was doing the wrong of never wanting or trying to be better." The old lady replies, "When people don't care to be better they must be doing everything wrong." I'm very grateful that surrender, like brokenness, is not something to be achieved in one day!
Another wonderful and helpful book by Nancy DeMoss Wolgemuth! Does the Lord have complete control of your heart? Are you wholeheartedly in love and devoted to our Lord Jesus Christ? What areas of your life still need to be surrendered to His Lordship and command? Do you seek His counsel about all things? Are you living a surrendered life? This is where there is fullness of joy and real living! Life forevermore!
I wish I read this book sooner. I read the first few chapters with a heaviness of heart I attempted to snuff out and ignore. But God would not let me. The surrender of which God asked Nancy, and and the many Christ-followers the book follows, felt in my flesh—too terrifying and too great of a request. Yet I close this book with lightness of heart. I realize now God does not ask anything of us that He did not first ask of Christ. Surrender being one of those things. What we gain from surrender is far more a treasure than what we lose. It is more of Christ. It is His will; it is His desires; it is His heart. I highly recommend this book to every single Christian woman that I know, and pray that your heart will be as transformed as mine has been by reading it.
This book may well be one of the most challenging books I’ve ever read in my walk with Christ. I thought I knew and understood surrender; however, this book blew me out of the water. This book has challenged how I look at every single aspect of my life and whether it is fully and completely surrendered to the authority of God, following the perfect example of surrender in Christ. I will never look at or hear the songs “I Surrender All” or “Take My Life and Let It Be”.
There are aspects of the book and writing style that feel a bit dated/archaic, which may simply be due to the fact that I remember my mom reading this book when I was young. Yet, for that same reason, it also feels nostalgic to read. But most simply, it was a pertinent and timely read for me right now, tying in much Biblical truth—things I needed to hear. For all of the above, I give it for stars.
Originally I gave this title 5 stars. I am revising my stars to zero.
The reason I am doing so is that since reading this title, several things about my faith journey and expression have changed and I no longer subscribe to evangelical ideologies.
Additionally, DeMoss is a proponent and enabler of patriarchal culture and I just can't respect that. --------------------------------
DeMoss' book on Surrender is challenging, encouraging and compels the reader to take action. Like the "first" book in this trilogy of sorts, Brokenness, Surrender is a must read for the believer in Christ who really wants to walk in the will of God. Surrender will highlight the places in your heart and life that don't really want to walk in God's way and then you will have a choice to make. In one particular chapetr DeMoss uses an explanation a missionary gave of "surrender" versus "committment". That entire section is now highlighted in my book and I am positive I will be referring back to it. The western Church has effectively done away with surrender and has pushed committment instead. They are vastly different and one follows in the will of God and the other merely thinks about it and considers it as long as it isn't too inconvenient. OUCH. That was a part of the book I will be chewing on for sure. While Surrender, like Brokenness, can be read as a stand alone book I think it is more effective reading it as part of the trilogy - Brokenness, Surrender and now I'm moving on to Holiness. One leads to the next and DeMoss does a wonderful job of navigating the way for us.
DeMoss write with great clarity and focus. Her books are filled with Scriptural references but also touch on the practical ways the Word applies to everyday life.
Surrender is another excellent book that probes the dimensions of our relationship with Christ. Each of the eight chapters contains ample historical references, biblical examples and practical ways to apply the various principles being discussed. Then, at the end of each chapter has specific ways to "personalize" what was presented.
The style is devotional and is very accessible. It contains an uplifting message that is also challenging. DeMoss often illustrates how we fall short of complete surrender yet with a humility that includes openly acknowledging some of her own struggles. This makes the book very effective in provoking us to reflect on how we measure in our walk with Christ. It is good read.
Warning...when taken to heart it will mean death to "self"
I was drawn to this book for quite some time. It was the title. I am not a big fan of womens self help books. Not to put down Miss De Moss' ministry. I don't know much about it to this day. However the topic of this book was something that God had been working into to me for quite some time. I succumbed to buying and reading it, and it wasn't until years later that God allowed a horrificly difficult time in my life where God allowed me the opportunity to live a surrendered life in a fish bowl for all to see. It is amazing how God works in us and through us when we "let" Him. Thankfully the author relies heavily on scripture!
A MUST read for every Christian!! It helps me realized how fall short our day to day standard of 'surrender' as compared to God's. DeMoss explains very well how the heart of every believer is the battle ground for control between self and God. She expresses many profound doctrines without using complicated language, which makes this book readable by anybody. Accompanied by sharp reflection questions to make the topics personal to readers, it's a good read for someone who truly want to search his/her own heart with full honesty to God.
This was perhaps the best book I've ever read on the topic of surrender. It defines it, gives examples from both Scripture and modern times, and lays a clear basis for why a Christian MUST practice daily surrender in every area of life. Even more helpful - and convicting - was the list of questions about whether particular areas of life have been surrendered fully to God.
Read as part of the Brokenness/Surrender/Holiness trilogy - a book that needs to be read through repeatedly, perhaps every few years.
Wow! What an amazingly humbling book. Ms. DeMoss really knows how to hit you where it counts... She really shows us just how full of ourselves we truly are, and our need to surrender everything - our health, our possessions, our time, our emotions, our wants and desires, our friends and family - to God and to trust him with everything. We cannot surrender to His will, if we stubbornly hold anything back. I will be needing to reread this book... numerous times.
The Christian Surrender means "we say I surrender all". When Jesus came to earth "He took the form of 'doulos' the lowest form of a slave." "One of the most compelling picture of Jesus in the Old Testament is burnt offering." God doesn't promise that we will never face danger, but those who take refuge in Him are placed under His protection."
"The fact remains that when we sign the blank contract of surrender, there are no guarantees about where God will lead us or how difficult our journey will be. Yet we know the character of the One in whom we've placed our trust. And we know that God's promises more than offset any risks or dangers or challenges that He may allow into our lives. " -NLD

Este libro lo lei en español con el titulo de Rendicion, realmente una bendicion a mi vida, no te hare spoiler pero si te dire que si debes replantearte de que manera te estas entregando a Dios, de verdad estas dando el todo? tal como El nos lo indico?
2020 I read this again almost a year to the day without even meaning too. I just knew that I needed to read some about surrender because of the work that God was doing on my heart. This book is so good (the audiobook is great too.
2019 This book is small, but it is convicting. I know I'm going to be processing it for a while.
Provides a really good overview of the meaning of total surrender. Inspiring real-life surrenders were told that will convinced you to surrender. The true meaning of surrender to our all-knowing God and the actions that you may have to take are very clearly expressed.
LIFE CHANGING ,the book gives the sentence-------- I surrender all. A new meaning. Take my life and let it be consecrated Lord to thee. This was my third time through this book. I highly recommend doing this with a friend . I have gone through this book with woman in counseling .
The chapter called "Living the Surrendered Life" is worth the price of the book. It consists of a list of questions to help one analyze the depth of surrender to the Lord in different areas of life. Convicting.
Although a mere 180 pages, this book digs deep into what it means to totally surrender your life to God. From the smallest anxiety to a major life changing decision, this book explains that everything should be left to the will of The Lord. An eye opening and soul searching read.
It had been a while since a book really shook me to my core. Surrendering to God in all aspects of our lives is so difficult, but so essential. I will need to re-read this book, for I am at baby-steps to getting there. A great book for all!
