Great news! Whoever you are, whatever you do, there is a patron saint who wants to help you specifically you with your life. There is a patron saint of booksellers. There is a patron saint of traveling salesmen. There are patron saints for vegetarians, cab drivers, and cancer patients. For astronauts, horseback riders, and dysfunctional families. For men who are physically unattractive. For families stressed by houseguests. These saints are ready to help, and their services are absolutely free. This Saint's for You! describes the real-life histories of more than 300 saints and explains how they have become associated with certain people, places, and professions. Also included are images of 300 gorgeous full-color holy cards that depict these heavenly allies in all their glory. Whether you're a flight attendant or a stenographer (or an ice skater or a motorcyclist or a Girl Scout . . . ), we guarantee these saints will save your life!
This book is a lot of fun! It reads less like a religious compilation and more like guy at a pub telling you cool stories over beer; if you are Christian/Catholic you'll appreciate your faith more, but even an athiest/agnostic will find it an engaging and fascinating read!
Firstly I want to note that this is a popular book to have been released, at least, three times with a different title. Secondly, this is the second edition, to my knowledge, which I could not find under this title.
That out of the way, I have to say, I appreciate the author's brief sketches of known, and more obscure saints that are patrons to the common, to the bizarre: Unruly Children, and Vampire Hunters. The inclusion of beautiful prayer card images for each saint elevated the book for me, especially as someone that enjoys prayer cards.
The lower rating is because the author chose to repeat, in some cases up to three times, the same saint. Granted, saint patronages are rarely for a single topic, however, the opportunity to cover other subjects is there in a book like this. I found it disappointing when there was mentioned again. He did write a new biography that built upon the last mentioned one.
I don't have a Catholic bone in my body but I've always been fascinated by Catholic rituals and iconography. The stories of the saints are sensational, full of violence and martyrdom. I'm still very comfortably agnostic but I do like folklore and tales of interesting people, real or fictional.
There are many recognizable saints in this book, but also more obscure figures that were new to me. Each "chapter" is bite-sized and includes an illustrated picture, usually a holy card. It's a nifty book if you find yourself wondering just how many saints there are and who or what they serve.
I've been looking for a copy of This Saint's For You! for a long time now,so I was so happy to see that it's been released again under this title. I don't care for the cover that much (needs more color) but I love everything else.I flip through this book almost every day and always find something new,and the pictures they use are perfect.
A lot less funny and a lot more straight forward than I thought it was going to be (not that there's anything wrong with that). Sometimes this did a great job of telling the story of how a saint became associated with a group (like computer users) and sometimes it definitely could have used a bit more back story (like alcoholics).
A fun book for everyone. Lists saints for almost every profession and occassion, including a saint for parents of disappointing children. The reprinting of beautiful saint cards throughout the book make this a lovely gift for anyone interested in saint.
