It was a big year for new relationships in the Patterson household. Wanting to avoid an elaborate, expensive wedding, Michael and Deanna married in secret and moved in together. Meanwhile, her mother continued to engineer a huge social affair, which threatened to upset an already delicate relationship between the two families. When Elly helped her reluctant daughter-in-law choose a dress, it brought them closer together-as confidantes and friends-and in the end, the wedding was beautiful.Meanwhile, Grandpa Jim began a slow, sweet courtship with Iris, whom he met at the Wednesday night Legion dance, and Elizabeth moved in with her boyfriend, Eric. She soon suspected he was not her knight in shining armor, and Anthony, the boy Elly and John always hoped Elizabeth would marry, becomes engaged to someone else. With This Ring gives readers more of what they enjoy a sense of connection, of being one of the participants in this humorous lifelike comic strip "saga." Like the many For Better or For Worse books that have preceded it, With This Ring is certain to be a popular best-seller.
Lynn Johnston CM OM is a Canadian cartoonist, well known for her comic strip For Better or For Worse, and was the first female cartoonist to win the Reuben Award.
I've always thought of the Pattersons as the neighbors. I started reading the strip when I was a kid and was faithful to the end. I have the entire collection and I read it every few years. It's a classic!
Coming out in 2003, strips from January through December of 2001. As the cover might make us suspect, the big news in this run is Mike and Deanna finally going through their big wedding, as produced by Deanna’s mother.
I love For Better or For Worse comics and just read With this Ring by Lynn Johnston. What a delight! She just always seems to get things right. It's a great read - and quick, too!
Okay, I was wrong. For Better or For Worse hasn't jumped the shark with this collection, either. I had failed to recollect just how much humor Ms. Johnston was able to conjure up out of a wedding. Michael and Deanna are tying the knot and the mother-in-law to be has a great many ideas of how things should go. So we get to journey with the Patterson clan through the trials and joys of one of the most momentous events in a person's life. Of course, life goes on outside of the nuptial planning, hence there are also strips featuring April's summertime antics, a blossoming romance for Grandpa Jim, a souring romance for Elizabeth and John's Hallowe'en decor. Good stuff.
This volume starts with several pages of prose explaining Michael and Deanna's relationship up to this book; basically a 'previously on' section. The wedding is, of course, the focus of this book, but there are also Grandpa Jim starting a relationship, April going to summer camp, and Elizabeth moving in with Eric, who is maybe not as good as he seems.
