A strange book that I finished only because I wanted to see how it was going to end. I found the main character confusing and annoying, and the graphic erotic scenes dotted throughout not fitting into any sort of coherent theme. Near the end it does tie together but reaching it took far longer than was needed and did not carry the psychological weight I ploughed through before getting there. I think the author is a competent writer but I didn't like this book at all. It was shortlisted however for the 1997 Miles Franklin award so now trying out his book 'The Mothers' that I came across after googling the author's name, as I do for all writers I don't recognise. So far, maybe less subtle and complex/clever, but good reading and I am not making myself finish it. POSTSCRIPT OR UPDATE: just finished 'The Mothers' and it's wonderful. 10 stars.
