Social Behavior and Self-Management - 5 Point Scales for Adolescents and Adults is a gem of a handbook that can be used directly by individuals on the autism spectrum or by those individuals in their lives who support them in their social and behavioral challenges. This book is so well-written and easy-to-follow. I found one of the best parts is how it is broken down into bite-sized easy-to-manage sections which cover various examples (in general and specific) of areas of potential concern.
I could easily imagine this book being utilized in many classroom settings - especially in Adult Transition classes - where teachers can break down the book and review it with students to create discussion opportunities. As well, it could be shared in a more intimate setting with an individual and his/her mentor, teacher or job coach using specific examples with that individual. Or, this resource can be read by the individual him/herself to use as a personal guide. I also considered that this would be a great tool for a teen headed for college in that it also includes suggestions for roommate situations and dorm behavior.
This book is a brief 66 pages and is broken down into two sections: Using Scales with Young Adults and Creating Scales in the Moment.
I would recommend reading this book along with The Hidden Curriculum of Getting and Keeping a Job: Navigating the Social Landscape of Employement. I think they go hand-in-hand and would be a useful gift for a teen with ASD who is graduating high school.
