Fundamentals of Literacy Instruction and Assessment is the subject of a book study I'm participating in this fall. It is a comfortable yet dense read that covers multiple facets of reading acquisition. This includes a history of legislation, assessment and how to use it, current reading science and and best practices for teaching important fundamental skills (the big 5: phonological awareness, phonics, vocab, fluency and comprehension + writing). Other chapters address ELL and and technology. This book is understandable for a beginner, but digs deeper for an advanced practitioner as well. Each chapter is written by an expert in that field so by the end of the chapter you will have a comprehensive overview that will prepare you to dig into more weighty texts. If you simply collect the books for your reading list that the contributors have written that will be a good start. Too many children are not proficient readers and there are many causes, but a lack of skilled teachers doesn't have to be one of them. Be sure to get the latest second edition--reading science is changing. I wish I'd had this when I first became an elementary teacher.
