Very concise. No fluffy stories about how the author's nephew (son, daughter...) struggled all the way thru school & they finally found the answer. Just straightforward information although still readable. It does get fairly technical at points.

"School Success for Kids With Dyslexia and Other Reading Difficulties" provides both parents and teacher with tools for helping their students to become better readers, but it also gives ideas to help those same students learn to love reading. It is well organized and thorough, beginning with the fundamentals of reading (what skills are involved) in Chapter 1 and continues in Chapter 2 with common reading difficulties. It is easy enough for the layperson to understand and may help a parent who is wondering if their child is dyslectic know where to turn to for help. Chapter 3 continues with strategies to help those with difficulty and each chapter continues with strategies to build as knowledge is imparted. Other chapters include references, scripts, drills and even an assessment form to use with students.
A good purchase for parents or teachers who need to learn about this particular learning disability.

What happens when your child struggles to read even though he desperately wants to read and gather information? As a parent, we all want our children to be successful in school and in life. Walter Dunson's book provides insight to many of the underlying issues where reading problems begin. As the parent of a child with dyslexia, I wanted to read and understand how my son was "wired." I really enjoyed the chapters that described the brain functions and how certain areas affect reading abilities. As a teacher it was nice to see the practical advice for how to help children with reading challenges. Thankfully, my son has a wonderful teacher who has used many of these practical strategies which have helped him become the reader he wants to be. I would definitely recommend this book for educators and parents. The sooner one begins the strategies, the faster the results will be.

I recommend this book for teachers of any struggling readers, whether they have traits of dyslexia or not. This book deepened my knowledge of spelling rules, decoding patterns, and teaching strategies. Recommended if you want to improve your reading instruction. I will definitely be keeping this book as a reference.
